From the team that brought us Pick a Pine Tree and Pick a Pumpkin, a big-hearted story about the love between grandparent and grandchild takes us through the seasons.
For one grandmother and grandchild, keeping dry in spring showers is easy when dashing through the drops side by side. In summer they stay cool with a squirt of the hose, then savor frozen treats in the shade. In autumn, snug in sweaters, they fly a kite while leaning into each other against the wind. And winter finds them nestling under blankets, sipping cocoa and watching the snow quietly fall. Narrated as a kind of love letter from a young child to a grandparent, this picture book pairs Patricia Toht’s safe, tender text with gentle art from Jarvis that meets it at every turn. An ideal gift from grandparent to grandchild (or the other way around), this charming story makes it clear that “no matter the weather, whatever we do, every day’s better together with you.”
Patricia Toht once owned a children’s bookshop called Never Never Land before turning a love of books into a love of writing. Pick a Pine Tree is her debut picture book. Patricia Toht lives in Chicago, Illinois.
I love a good picture book that promotes adventure and getting outside to explore! This book is also a resource for teaching about the changing seasons.
A grandmother and her young grandson get together frequently and are able to enjoy walks in various types of weather, depending on the season. In the spring, they put on rain boots and coats to stomp in puddles. They splash in sprinklers in the summer, and cool off with lemonade afterwards while sitting under a tree. They bundle up to fly kites in autumn, and snuggle down with robes and blankets to read when it is winter. In the end, they decide that it doesn't matter what the weather is. The most important thing is that they can spend time together.
Toht writes an excellent seasonal book in verse, and I'm fond of her Pick a Perfect Egg, Pick a Perfect Pine Tree, and Pick a Perfect Pumpkin. This is a great overview of the whole year, and I love the relationship between the boy and his grandmother. Toht also wrote All Aboard the London Bus, which I enjoy because it paints such a great picture of all that London has to offer.
Together with You is a perfect read aloud, with short, rhyming lines of text that cause pages to be turned quickly enough to make the antsiest two year old happy. There's enough detail on the pages for quieter children who want to savor the pages and find squirrels hidden in trees or count the flowers in the yard.
Jarvis' illustrations are colorful and happy, and the colors change with the seasons. I really appreciate that the grandmother looks the perfect age; not too old, not too young, and able to run in the sprinkler or walk in the rain. While my grandmothers were both much older and wore aprons and support house with house slippers, I am not that far from grandmother age myself and like to think that I sport fashions more similar to the grandmother in this book.
Together with You is a perfect gift for someone who has a new grandchild, and makes a perfect read aloud even if one has to be conducted over the internet. Pair this with Clinton's Grandma's Garden, Castillo's Grandma in the City, Ferneyhough's Nana, Nenek & Nina, or Grandma’s Purse by Vanessa Brantley-Newton.
This beautiful picture book is a celebration through the year of the time a little boy spends with his grandmother making memories and enjoying being together. The rhyming text is lyrical and evocative and I very much enjoyed the pictures it evoked in my head - ‘you huddle a hat on your head’, is just one phrase that I particularly liked. The illustrations are muted and yet vibrant with many details that are easily overlooked on a first reading but that add to the atmosphere really well. I liked seeing the family’s pet cat who appears on many pages and I know my granddaughter will enjoy spotting it too. Together With You is a perfect book to read with a toddler , cuddled up on the sofa (I am looking forward to reading and no doubt re reading it with my own little munchkin!) and it is a wonderful exploration of the bond between grandparents and grandchildren.
Young boy describes his time with his grandmother through the seasons of the year. He states that the ultimate joy just comes from being together. This is a beautiful picture book that explores the relationship of a child and grandparent. The soft digital illustrations evoke a sense of coziness to the title. This would be a good book to share in storytimes and would be a great book shared between grandparent and grandchild. There are many situations that this book would be a good title to share and thus I would recommend its purchase in most library settings that provide picture books. This book was provided by the publisher for professional review by SWON Libraries.
Brief summary: A grandmother and her grandchild put on rain gear to play in Spring's rain. Summer arrives with them cooling off from the hot sun. Autumn brings the wind they need to fly a kite and enjoy the falling leaves. Winter comes with them getting cozy and watching the snow from inside. Each season is spent with one another.
The seasonal color schemes go in hand with this gentle and calming book that blends from one season to the next.
A child sharing time with a grandparent is always special and here we see the grandparent in activities in all four seasons. Comforting ending that would make a good bedtime story. And as much as I don’t like digitally generated illustrations, I love these adthey appear to be vibrant watercolors, but they are digitally generated. So is it the digital program or the artist that makes the difference?
It's lovely to see grandparents represented in stories for little readers, but I just found this one a little bit dry (no pun intended, although a lot of this story is about seasons and the weather!). The illustrations were nice, but not especially captivating, and the message was really sweet and good-natured.
Not one that I think I would revisit, but a nice one for changing of the seasons.

Awwww ;-) I saw this displayed at a new library we visited and couldn't resist that sweet cover. This is the sort of book I loved sharing with my boys when they were much littler and I'm already feeling nostalgic. It's a cozy hug of a book, full of the love between a grandmother and her grandson as they enjoy spending time together across the seasons.
A beautiful celebration of the simple moments, in every season, that build memories in an intergenerational relationship. The art on every page feels soft and cozy, and the gentle, rhyming verse carries readers through a year of day to day joys between a grandmother and child. A perfect read aloud, read together, or gift.
TOGETHER WITH YOU takes the reader on a journey through the seasons along with a young child and their grandma. From walking in the rain to drinking hot cocoa, cozy rhyming verse and active illustrations bring you right into the scenes on the pages. A wonderful book for snuggling and reading together.
Adorable children's book with terrific illustrations. I love the changing of the seasons through the story and the appropriate dressing that goes with it. This would be a great gift to give for mother or a grandmother for Mother's Day.
Simple rhyming text with beautiful illustrations. Both words and images compliment each other to show this beautiful relationship between a grandmother and grandchild.
Props to the author for the on-point meter and rhymes! This might be the best execution of a rhyming book I've read in a long time. Phonological awareness, vocabulary, background knowledge, PLAY
This sweet rhyming story is about a little boy enjoying time with his grandmother, and all the special things they enjoy in each season. Very nicely illustrated.
Together with You is a children's picture book featuring a young boy and his grandmother spending time together throughout the seasons.
The book is told in a poem and moves from spring to summer, autumn to winter and follows the pair as they enjoy each others company, whether walking in the rain or snuggling with cocoa.
The book is highly illustrated with beautiful drawings that capture the moments perfectly. The story is very sweet and would make a fabulous read for a granny with her grandchildren.
