Izumi is hyper pumped-up about the upcoming school trip to Kyoto, and has even volunteered to be the leader of his group. His first task is to find another member to add to the gang in order to make a group of six. And Izumi’s mystery selection turns out to be Saruogi-kun, a boy who seems suspiciously similar to Izumi, albeit far more timid. With possibly two disaster-prone boys in the group, can Shikimori be a strong enough guardian angel to ensure that the trip to Kyoto is a memorable one (for good reasons)?

Who doesn’t love school trips? Possibly Saruogi, who’s trying to fit in amongst the tight-knit friend group that is our main cast and turns out to be an even sadder sack than Izumi. But Izumi’s not going to be deterred from making this trip memorable by anybody, not even his sulky girlfriend…

If there’s one thing that this series deserves all the credit for, it’s putting the lie to the idea that you can’t make a good manga out of a couple dating (Io Sakisaka, take notes!). You can and it turns out that it doesn’t take that much effort.

The field trip arc is okay, but first we have to properly introduce poor Saruogi, who has a literal ‘save the cat’ moment to let you know he’s a decent guy beneath all that anxiety. I think part of his point is to show what Izumi would be like without Shikimori, but I do think our boy is a bit better than that.

Either way, that section is super fun, but we also get the knowing acknowledgment that fitting a new person into a group of established friends is hard, no matter how welcoming they are (the seating arrangement during travel subtly speaks volumes). There’s also one of the strangest (and best) Pokémon gags I’ve seen in ages.

The field trip is perfectly fine, though it doesn’t go nearly as far as it needs to distinguish itself from a million other field trips, though leaning into Izumi’s boundless enthusiasm is a smart choice. Having missed one school trip due to a cold, he is determined to make this one the best ever (as are his overprotective parents).

With the actual story out of the way, we needs must focus on Shikimori and Izumi content and that’s where this story, as expected, takes to the skies. Dentists everywhere quake in fear, because the sugar is flying.

Well, sort of. One of the best parts of this pairing is that these two are pure hormone bombs, at least within manga’s depiction of polite Japanese society, and when they start getting too into one another the best moments tend to happen.

Shikimori’s cool demeanour gets most of the job done, but Izumi is totally learning how to wrangle his girlfriend in the most adorable fashion (Shikimori is so pouty this volume when she can’t see him that it’s just the damn cutest).

Still, Shikimori lands the deadliest blows. The two of them talking on a swing set leads to poor Izumi’s mind being blown, but there’s a moment with an impromptu Pocky game later on that rivals the one in Rent-A-Girlfriend for sheer heat (which, for the record, is a sizzler and one of the only good parts of that series) and it is one of the hungriest things Shikimori has ever done. And that bonus manga? Damn, girl.

Toss in some really fun Hachimitsu moments (she reminds me of Grimace from the old McDonald’s ads, oddly) and general tomfoolery, plus Izumi getting some results of his own with leading the field trip? That’s a full volume right there.

4.5 stars - 4 stars for most of the content, plus two epic Shikimori moments makes for an easy round up on this one. Never change, you two. Not the most memorable the story’s ever been, but my blinders are fully on for this series at this point.

Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Vol. 9 (My Kindle Review)

As their class trip to Kyoto is coming, Izumi attempts to help shy and timid Saruogi come out of his shell with their trip group while being a great group leader. Later the big trip arrives and the group’s already having a fun time while Shikimori attempts to have private time with her Izumi. A (100%/Outstanding)

This was a really cute volume! While Shikimori's and Izumi's relationship has gotten in a little stale for me in the last few volumes, this volume revived it to full health. They were so fucking cute I couldn't take it. Hachimitsu and Inuzuka continue to be the best side characters and the new character was really cute too. Overall just a really strong volume and I can't wait to see how the rest of the trip goes!

Ça me va, moi.

Konnichiwa to all, readers 🌸

Today I bring you the review of the ninth volume of «Shikimori is Not Just a Cutie». That said, let's get started:

💕This volume begins with Izumi, the leader of his group, preparing for the school trip. The arrival of Saruogi, a classmate who seems to share the protagonist's luck, reveals his big heart.

Meanwhile, Shikimori, excited and nervous about her boyfriend's role, offers us endearing moments marked by her insecurities.

💕In the central chapters, the school adventure begins after some comedic scenes with the lady and her sweets. The volume includes a couple of transitional chapters with humorous situations before arriving in Kyoto.

Among them are the nerves of the night before, Izumi's overprotection, and Shikimori dancing with her dog.

This block culminates with the first group cultural visit to the «Phoenix Hall», famous for appearing on the ten-yen coins. The emerging logic reflects the couple's desire to have fun and her need to be close to Izumi.

It's interesting how the author addresses this typical phenomenon of teenage couples, giving it his characteristic comedic touch.

💕In the final chapters, the frustration of the redhead becomes evident as she can't spend time with her guy. Fortunately, she manages to get a few minutes alone with Izumi, who has run out of battery on his phone.

Although it's their first night together and away from home, the school trip provides scenes of politically correct teenage antics at bedtime.

Morning comes with a collective declaration of good intentions, but the closing of the volume feels lackluster.

🌸Conclusion: This ninth volume kicks off with the long-awaited action from the cast. The reader observes that the inclusion of Saruogi in the friend group boosts Izumi's maturity and reveals Shikimori's growing emotional dependence.

Rating: 5🌸

continues to be the most wholesome read ever. this volume has a school trip, and introduces a new character to their friend group - saruogi, who is nice but painfully shy. izumi and shikimori lead the way in trying to make him feel welcome. and per the cool-girl trope, shikimori has some incredibly awesome moments here, including one incident with a vending machine that had me cheering, 'YOU GO GIRL!!!'

I just love seeing the friendships here - they are so cute!!!

I always find it wonderful to slip away to the characters in this series and this volume was no different. It focuses on preparation and the first half of a school trip to Kyoto which Izumi is very excited about. There are still new sides and growing familiarity to his relationship with Shikimori that are fun to read about alongside their friendships and everyday activities!
