No Shame - The Key to the Fountain of Youth

Rate this book
If you’ve paid for exercise programs and not stayed with them, this book may change your life!

The exercise industry is a monster―from online coaching, phone apps, email cues, gadgets, and infomercials, it is designed to turn you into a steady revenue stream. With this book you will no longer need to pay for meaningless approaches to exercises, but find the tools to remain motivated and active throughout your life.
This book is written by a Physical Therapist specifically for people who want to begin exercising, and those who have started and quit, as well as those realizing the negative effects of age on their activity levels. The author has spent his career studying behavior and developing methods to teach people to overcome personal barriers, increase independence in their physical well-being, increase activity levels, and reach their personal goals.

Rest assured, this is different than any of the exercise plans you have tried and rather than providing a strict exercise regime, it teaches you step-by-step to understand your own body and create your own exercise program that you can carry with you and adjust throughout your life. It’s a journey of self-reflection and that empowers you to stay active in ways you've not seen in any exercise programs.

Is there a Fountain of Youth? None of us live forever, but proper exercise allows us to feel young until the end.

You know when you click on a link for a recipe and before you can actually get to the recipe you have to scroll through the author's life history? This is sort of the book equivalent. The promises on the cover ("The Key to the Fountain of Youth" and "This book may change your life") are all well and good, but wading through chapter after chapter of . . . nothing is really frustrating. The book begins, predictably with a chapter called "Why I Wrote This Book." Chapter 2 is not much better, "Why You Should Read This Book." Then there are chapters extoling the benefits of exercise and directing you to "write down why you quit or don't exercise." Life-changing stuff, I think we can all agree! Oh, and the author doesn't miss chances to plug a previous book. It's not until Chapter 8 that some exercises are actually demonstrated with photos (although there are some photos and directions on stretching in an earlier chapter). While this book is quite short, and I realize there had to be some filler to make a book, there is just too much filler to content, in my opinion.

I received a copy of this book from a GoodReads giveaway.

I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. Although there was nothing mind blowing in this book it was well thought out and had key information for beginners starting an exercise program. As someone who used to exercise regularly and was familiar with a lot of the information, I still benefited from the discussion of the importance of building up exercise levels. It seems like every other program tells you to do more each day or as much as you can. As someone who recently hit 50, I recognized that this approach is more appropriate so as not to cause injuries. Even younger people should pay attention to this advice. I like that some physiological discussions were also included. I think one of the best things about the book was that it was short and simple. The author didn’t belabor points which kept the book readable. The appendix items may be very useful in the future. My overall opinion is that this was a good, down to earth guide and I appreciated the information.

I received a copy of this book as a Goodreads giveaway. I am not the target audience: I am a former personal trainer. Nevertheless, I am providing a review based on my thoughts about how useful I believe the book might be to the average person.

This book is fine for individuals who haven't ever seriously exercised, or a refresher for those who haven't exercised in a very long time and are feeling at a loss as to how they may safely proceed.

The first 5 chapters simply attempt to help you understand what hasn't worked in the past, and to make you feel good about yourself and about exercise in general.

Chapters 6-11, and the appendices are all quite good. I would note that a few stretches shown in Ch 6 may cause hyperextension or hyperflexion of knees in inexperienced exercisers, and probably a word of caution should be included.

Overall, a very quick read that will be a useful guide to many, and invaluable to a few; but, I believe the knowledge of most semi-athletic adults will surpass the level of instruction and guidance provided in this book.

This was a GoodReads giveaway win of a Kindle ebook.

Aimed at those first starting or restarting an exercise routine. I really liked how non-judgmental and motivating the first portion of the book read. One can pretty much take out the word "exercise" and replace it with any life goal and still feel the "don't give up" and "try, try again" words of encouragement coming from the author.

The stretching and exercise routines outlined are all pretty rudimentary, but so easy and basic that you should make them a starting point for any self health exercise program. Don't skip the appendixes. They are very informative and will help you understand when things just feel off.

It also makes a good reference guide, so don't bury it too far under your stack of books. Take it out often and review as you need. Always remember the inspiration this book provides.

This was a GoodReads. Now it's time for me to get out of my chair and start moving my fat a**.

This book is for absolute beginners. If you need information on how to get started, what to do, and what to do if you get injured, this bookwould be helpful. If your already several years into an exercise program, whether it's working or not, you probably already have the basics down pat. The only "Fountain of youth" tip is to keep moving. Move it or loose it is a well known fact, and this theme is mentioned once or twice. It's a quick read with pictures if you need help learning how to exercise.
