Port is missing and Freybug is angry. She can feel him alive through the bond but cannot locate him, a combination that should be impossible. So, she seeks backup, a difficult proposition for a being with her temperament. The resulting search unleashes destruction around the city while unveiling a grand conspiracy much larger than she could have imagined, literally changing the rules of engagement. Time to do things HER way.
Bug is great. It is so much fun reading about her relationship with Porter and her attempts to get him back. And we get to learn a lot more about the other characters and their own challenges. There were some surprises and I just can’t wait until the next book to find out what happens next.

Sanchez's writing style is crisp and immersive, allowing readers to vividly visualize the events as they unfold.
One of the standout aspects of "The Way of Bug" is the way Sanchez fleshes out the secondary characters. Each character is given depth and purpose, making them feel like integral parts of the story. This attention to detail not only adds layers to the plot but also hints at potential future developments in upcoming books by the author.
Furthermore, the author's ability to provide insights into the Bug character is exceptional. Through well-crafted dialogue and inner monologues, readers gain a deeper understanding of Bug's motivations, fears, and strengths. This level of character development adds an emotional depth to the story, making Bug a relatable and compelling protagonist.

In conclusion, "The Way of Bug" is a must-read for anyone seeking a thrilling adventure with a strong and captivating protagonist. Orlando Sanchez has crafted a remarkable story that will leave readers on the edge of their seats and hungry for more.
I enjoy reading most of Orlando Sanchez’s books, but . . .
This neo-noir UF book features shape-shifting Freybug, better known as “Bug”—a lethal killer by nature, and in the first book, a prickly secondary character. This time, Bug is the protagonist who has inexplicably “lost” Jericho Porter, her blood-bonded. Bug’s goal is to find Porter, so the primary storyline is so-so. I couldn’t stop thinking of Bug as a secondary character who is subbing for Porter the Protagonist—even though he doesn’t appear for most of the book.
I prefer intricate plots that hold my attention and strong characters who speak to me as I read. So, I kept losing reading-momentum, which rarely happens with fiction. It took me four days to get through 187 pages—when I should’ve finished this a day at most. Meanwhile, I finished an audiobook, read a historical fantasy story, and began a neuroscience textbook. I actually picked up and finished this book to escape the nonfiction tome. So, I’ll probably pass on this series.
Sorry, Mr. Sanchez. I do love M&S, Night Warden, and Rule of the Council series.
It isn't often we get a chance to enjoy his "side" characters (dare you to call Bug that to her face lol), but I love it when we do. Bug is the most efficient killing machine, but this book shows she is so much more. Violence is her most efficient tool, often utilized in a stealthy manner - stealthy because they see a height challenged woman and dismiss her danger potential, to their own detriment. Bug doesn't hide what she is, but she is more than even she thinks she is. In this book, she grows to new skill and self awareness whilst rescuing her partner - a man almost as dangerous as she is. That difference is huge in the scenario he gets himself into this time. I enjoyed watching Bug operate, learn, and grow. Give her a chance - you won't be disappointed.
From the first page, where Bug walked into Croft's wearing her 'resting murder face', I loved this story! Port is missing, he's been taken. As his companion, Porter and Bug have a blood bond. Smart, lethal, and fearless, Bug will stop at nothing to find him and woe to the person or group who kidnapped him. She gets help in unexpected places, no help in others, as she races against time to find Porter. This story is fast-paced, with a terrific lead character, a good supporting cast, a neat twist, and spiced with humor. If you like urban fantasy, give this one a look. Note: It's best if you read "The Bullet Ballet', the first book of this series to get the backstory on the characters and world. It's a good read also.
Companions only know violence, except when they know more than just violence. Bug, without her Gatekeeper, is expected to be nothing more than a deranged, violent thing that can be destroyed without much difficulty. However, Villians, and let's be honest, heroes, everywhere, need to remember not to underestimate small females. The way of Bug is a tale of focused intent as she seeks to find, and rescue her Gatekeeper. Those who took Port beware. But the finding, and the rescuing uncover deeper issues which Mr Sanchez needs to address in more books about the Gatekeepers, and their companions. We need more Bug.
You should be quick, deadly, and concise.. -The Tenets of Review
I tried to read this book slowly, but somewhere about half way through it is like crossing the event horizon. The only way out is through at that point. This series is the authors expression of a new sub genre “UF Neo Noire” it has the classic read of a gumshoe detective novel with all of the action of a Michael Bay movie. This is a fun read that will not disappoint the reader. If I had an extra hand I would give this book three thumbs up👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
A fast paced action novel. And the character of Bug is likable.
But everything else is a mumbo-jumbo scramble of inconsistencies. Secret techniques - that seemingly everybody know. Banned practices - that everybody do. Deep conspiracies - that everybody know about or are unmasked by simply asking around. Plot devices cribbed from everywhere - sign casting from the Witcher, (way too many) secret combat techniques from manga. Etc. etc.
Drop all that - they aren’t in the slightest necessary - and you’d have som good action stories, as the pacing and the characters are good.
Oh, the charm of Bug! When Porter is taken Bug's first reaction is to unleash violence and destruction on those responsible. But to find Porter and stop those responsible for killing companions she may need to slow down and listen for her bond, to her mentor, and remember the Tenets. This tale has a lot packed into it. The action is continuous, with characters you want to know and some you want to go by way of Bug! Definitely recommend reading this series.
Bug's Gatekeeper is missing and she is dead set on finding him! No one is willing to help, and that's fine with her! She sets out on a path of retribution and destruction as she discovers that there is more than just her Gatekeeper in the crosshairs. One other Gatekeeper steps up to help and what they find sets their blood to boil. They will find justice for all involved. Another great read by Orlando Sanchez!
Glad this has turned into its own series: can't get enough Bug! Beware, this is highly addictive and very easily read in one sitting. Read it in two sittings, only because I forced myself to slow down and savor the story. This is yet another book written with painstaking care, great characters, and a very interesting plot line. It's evident there will be another book to follow, and hopefully, many more.
Bug discovers Porter was kidnapped. But really he is a highly decorated Gatekeeper and shouldn’t have been able to be taken. Something is amiss and something or someone is killing companions. Bug sets out to find Porter and as she gets closer to finding the reason he was taken she starts controlling her abilities as a companion and discovers what she cares about are her people. They are her family and nobody messes with her family. Great reading!
Another fun story featuring Bug, a barely controlled lethal force. Porter, her partner has disappeared after the events of the first book. Bug suspects he has been snatched as something is partially blocking her blood connection to him. So Bug's on her own trying to find and potentially rescue him, with assistance from a retired Gatekeeper. A lot of fun once again as all of Orlando's books are.
Bug is awesome, this was a fun read. Fast paced, witty, with lots of mayhem and bodies hitting the floor. Bug is on the rampage as she roves the city and razes buildings and underground facilities to recover Porter. Along with Cormer and Ella (who is totally scary by the way) the work their way through the enemy, with the intent on recovering a kidnapped Porter and uncovering a devious plot against the Companions.
Never separate a Companion from their Gatekeeper, that is the way of Death. LoL, it was fun watching Bug figure this out, especially when she needed a "hint" from her Doru. Can't wait to learn more of the Way as these two head out on their next mission. True "Gatekeepers " never retire, their sense of purpose won't let them.
The author manages to weave a compelling, action packed story in the style of classic Noir, upgraded to current times with dialogue to match. Bug's story, this UF NeoNoir was a real pleasure to read. The level of detail in the fight scenes, had me wincing in pain, they were that good. Highly recommend reading.
What happened when a Companion looses her Gatekeeper? Nothing good. Sanchez masterfully spins an action packed story that keeps you wanting more. More story, more books, more of everything. Bug and Porter are excellent additions to Sanchez’ arsenal of characters and stories. Pick it up, read it and try to stop, I dare you.
It was wonderful to have a whole book devoted to Bug. Turns out, she has a heart! And she is very good at what she does. It was also quite fun to find out that there are one or two people who can beat her. It makes her a bit less surreal to know she has vulnerabilities: her heart and her not-quite-perfect ability. Go Bug!
A very great pleasure to read! The concept of giving a secondary character its own voice and perspective in a setting were everything about them is assumed is interesting and very well executed. The ride is wild and impossible to stop (if you start reading you will reach The End wondering what happened to the afternoon/evening).
I didn’t think that I would be as drawn in by Bug as I was. Yes, her first impulse is to maim and destroy. The risk of losing her blood bonded gatekeeper kept her in check. She became more of a 3D person in this book.It was fun getting to know her back story.
Bug has one way to deal with problems, attack and destroy. When Porter goes missing, she will need to learn another way, if she wants to find him. Helped by an elder gatekeeper, Corman, she begins her hunt. All is not as it seems and more is at stake than finding Porter. Good book as usual from Orlando.
I enjoyed book 2 in this series. Bug is a great character. I am a huge fan of strong kick… women. This story had me hooked from the beginning. I looked forward to the next book.
I don't usually review books. The porter and bug series is just too good not to drop a few lines on. I love Monty and Strong but this series is quickly becoming another of My favorites.
I totally love Bug. She is like the ultimate warrior but still has things to learn and master. Best read and I hope we get many more stories involving Bug. Highly recommend.
Quick short read. I enjoyed it a lot. Great learning about who the companions are and some of what they can do. Bug is not an animal. She is bug 😃 . Follow the way of the bug and learn snap crackle, pop and don't forget Pain. 😁
Orlando Sanchez knows how to tell a story that is both complex and light hearted. This tale about Bug who would normally be a sidekick or secondary character is an interesting romp with politics, magic and great fight scenes.
Orlando Sanchez is genius! Poster and Bug give me LIFE! I'm deliriously happy about this series and mad as hell that I finished it so fast. Now I have to wait for the next book. Absolutely fantastic!
In a race to save Porter, Bug must fight for her very life. Will she save him in time? Will we learn what the “Way of Bug” really is? Will it be painful? Certainly!
