I'm torn between giving this a 1 or a 5. Many little girls will adore this. Personally, I want to know what the people at Mattel were smoking when they thought "For our next Barbie story, let's adapt a macho-dominated, racy French novel about adultery, dueling and l'honneur!" It's wonderful to give girls active heroines instead of just passive princesses, but the amount of literary and historical butchery required to make a story to go with this title creates a book that is so atrocious in its assault on adult rationality that it becomes a brilliant work of art. Somebody, please buy me my own copy; it's been a long time since I've read anything this hilarious.

At the beginning we learn that Barbie/ "Corinne" (clad in very 17th-century tight pink pants and boots as she sword-fights) wants to be a musketeer. "Corinne goes to Paris. She learns that she cannot be a Musketeer. A dog chases Corinne's kitten." Wait, what? Why can't she be a musketeer? While the reason for her change of career plans doesn't make it into the text, a list of seemingly unimportant events do make it in. I won't go through it all, but I LOVE the way that the palace maids are all invited to the palace ball. Corinne, of course, uses her sword to defend the prince, but one girl shoots arrows inside the crowded ballroom (uh, she had the bow hidden in her ballgown somehow?), and the other two seem to be employing some sort of mystic rhythmic gymnastic/flamenco martial hybrid to defeat evil doers with two fans and a really long ribbon.

I bought this for the library because it's one of the few (very high-demand) Barbie-easy readers that are actually relatively low-level. The names are still ridiculously difficult for a beginning reader to sound out; Corinne, Aramina, Vivica and Renée aren't names appropriate to the reading level of the rest of the text, so caveat emptor if your child has a low frustration threshold, particularly if she hasn't already seen the movie. However, if your daughter cannot get enough pink and Barbie in her life, this is a book with which she will be motivated to practice her basic reading skills. Sometimes, especially at this stage of reading development, that's all you really want out of a book.

Ok, so we watched the movie as E's reward for being a trooper through TV Turnoff Week. We "read" the classic version first (with heavy editing from mom). I have such mixed feelings about the Barbie movies. I feel the characters are much better role-models than any of the Disney princess crowd, yet they take girl power to the extreme and instead of lauding what is great about womanhood, the characters often find greatness in taking on the "male" world. Men are subtely denegrated - not the best for the three little brothers watching alongside or for E herself. I do appreciate the strength of character and commitment to "right" though. Hollywood, how about some "people power"?!

This is basically a recap of the movie. I didn’t expect anything else from it, but I’m not rating it because rating a recap doesn’t make much sense.

I only read this because I was gifted the book years ago around the time it was published, and thought maybe I should actually read it before I get rid of it.

I mean... it's a Golden Books adaption of the Barbie adaption of The Three Musketeers - what do you expect? I genuinely loved the Barbie movie of this, it was so cute and I appreciated all the references to the Dumas novel but you obviously can't get that in 24 pages. The art was cute at least even if it's the most watered-down version of the story.

So I picked this book up for A from the library as she is now into barbies and I wanted to see if she would enjoy this book even though it is a bit longer than our normal read.
I was very surprised she sat and listened to the story and was really into the barbies and how they were saving the prince.
Corinne wants to become a musketeer but sadly she can not but when her and her friends save the prince well their dreams will come true.
This is a step two reading book and that means more words but it is easy to read or so I thought.

I liked how the barbies are more than just girls they can do something else besides look pretty.
We haven't watched the movie that goes with this but to me it was really good read to read to A.

"Of" by Mary Man-Kong is an engaging novel that seamlessly weaves together elements of mystery and romance. The narrative unfolds with a captivating plot, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The characters are well-developed, and their relationships add depth to the story. Man-Kong's writing style is fluid, making the book a quick and enjoyable read. The novel explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, leaving readers with a sense of introspection. Overall, "Of" is a well-crafted and thought-provoking tale that resonates long after the final page.

Anyone can be a hero, if they try, and if they set their heart to it. So, Barbie is out to prove that she can be a musketeer. However, the palace inhabitants disagree, and make her a maid.
But, after she and the other maids save the prince at a party, they confess to one another that they always wanted to be musketeers. They decide to practice doing so, and show everyone that they can do anything they put their hearts and minds to.

For a Barbie book, this was much more impressive in the empowerment department. Four girls changing the "norm" to the betterment of all, this book shows young girls that they are worth more and can do more for themselves. The message of confidence in this book is stronger than any I've yet to find in a Disney film where princesses rely heavily on the stronger, smarter, more heroic male love interest for validation and conflict resolution.

My granddaughter and I haven't watched the movie so can't say one way or another if it went with the movie or not. But the story flowed in places and other places it was just kind of 'out there'. The girls are determined to be Musketeers regardless of what others think so they all practice and in the end save the day and are the 'four' Musketeers...

Many years ago, I owned and read this repetitively. I really liked it. I watched the movie a few years after having this book. It's great for very young fans of Barbie who are entering or have just begun grade school. Even though this simple book can't capture nearly a half of what the movie does, it's still a neat little tale about 4 strong, young heroines.

For a Barbie book (and a DVD novelization), this one isn't half bad. The story is a nice one, showing the "girl power" of the Barbie dolls, and showing them as something other than beautiful. Having said that, my ten year old was a little disappointed (upon hearing me read it to my five year old) that it didn't have more romance!! LOL

It was interesting and I have read it many times. There is a girl named Corinne and in the end she becomes a musketeer along with three other girls.

Barbie and her friends try to figure out a way to become a musketeer. They are hired to keep the castle clean and figure out that someone is out to harm the prince. They train to get ready for the day they need to rescue the prince. My daughter loves this story.

Barbie did not actually appear in the story. I know it is for beginning readers, but the short sentences could have been better connected. They should have come up with a more original story than shoving Corinne and company into Dumas' drama.

This is my least favorite novel of the Barbie movies. It is not told very well and everything is fake and naively done - so much that I feel a child could even tell. Oh well, younger kids will maybe enjoy it.
