A thick little book at almost 400 pages, but as about half of them are occupied by pictures and the text is fairly sparse, this is not such a weighty read. Greek mythology features around 3000 characters, and this book tries to cover something about almost all of them in very little depth. As such, it reads in a haphazard, higgledy-piggledy kind of way, with occasional amusing detail, but generally in very broad strokes. The pictures (usually photos of statues or paintings) are often very decent, but unfortunately lacking in captions, while the text is rather well-written and immaculately proofread/printed. An appealing coffee table sort of book, for those who perhaps want to better understand imagery in artworks, but one that may be unsatisfyingly shallow for anyone remotely academic about this subject. 4/5

This is a great overview of Greek mythology, with a synopsis of some of the best-known stories, as well as some lesser-known myths. It also includes a brief history of ancient Greece, & a few lists of books, movies, & operas that are influenced by these tales.

Greek mythology is vast and can be overwhelming. While the book doesn't go into detail about many of the myths, it gives you a pretty good taste of the variety and richness of these ancient stories, coupled with beautiful photos of Greece & artworks depicting some of the most indelible stories.

This is great for anyone who loves classical mythology in general, or who, like me, hasn't read any of these stories since elementary school. It'll give you a new appreciation of antiquity as an adult.
