This book is part of the Shifter Nation: Fated Over Forty and the main characters are Rebecca and Dean. They used to be romantically involved as teenagers until the idea of his clan and her feeling it was more important to him than her, had her leaving town heartbroken and not returning for some twenty eight years. She has returned to the small town of Carlton, with her teenage daughter Madison, to help out her elderly adoptive parents run their shop, Claire’s Confectionary. Dean is a bear shifter and part of the Thompson Clan in town, as well as a logger and part time fireman. He has never left town, feeling part of his clan and helping out in the family logging business. He has never married nor forgotten Rebecca. She has found out that her parents are in need of a lot more help and attention than she realised. Her mother is getting forgetful and ends up setting some confectionary on fire, leaving Madison having to lead her grandparents out to safety, whilst Rebecca awaits the fire brigade. Only for her to find herself face to face with her ex love, Dean, as he and his fellow firefighters put out the small fire. He gives her his number in cases eh wants to get in touch, but she has actively been avoiding him since she returned!
Rebecca never knew who her parents were and only her adoptive parents knew anything about her mother, but thought Rebecca was purely human all of her life. Madison acts as a typical teen who wasn’t happy to have been dragged from the big city of Seattle, leaving behind all of her friends, and starts to make some friends with the local kids. The Thompson Clan’s alpha and beta decide to go away. Leaving a committee of trusted clan members in charge to deal with any issues of problems that arise. One issue is the local youth holding parties out in the forests and without any supervision. What might be happening there is unknown, but seems to be involving youth from many of the different clans around and could be having some illegal activities going on! Dean is one of five clan members asked to be part of this committee and finds getting to know Rebecca again, takes him away from the work he should be doing for his clan. Rebecca always hated the clan for taking Dean’s attention back in the day and she never really understood what the clan did for its members and how it was one big family to all, helping those in need and sharing skills where needed. Rebecca might be going through her midlife change, but she has another surprising change to come. One that will shock her and all who know her! Dean has fallen for her again, having never really forgotten her, but may need to steel his heart if she refuses to deal with the clan or even want to hear about it. She may have no choice as change will force her hand to accept things she never thought possible! An unusual twist at the end, which leaves life up in the air and Rebecca finding out she has more in common with Dean and the clan than just her parents. Trips down memory lane after hearts were broken, certainly don’t give a good start to a new relationship between them and it looks like a clean slate is the best place to start.
