The chickens have laid their eggs all over the yard! Mei looks for the eggs, searching next to a watering can, behind a flower pot, inside a wheelbarrow . . . and under a chicken! Go on a springtime egghunt in this playful story about spatial sense.
Storytelling Math celebrates children using math in their daily adventures as they play, build, and discover the world around them. Joyful stories and hands-on activities make it easy for kids and their grown-ups to explore everyday math together. Developed in collaboration with math experts at STEM education nonprofit TERC, under a grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation.
I fully admit to loving Grace Lin's books. Her multi-cultural illustrations are well past needed and much appreciated in children's literature.
Where Are the Eggs is part of a series that teaches young children basic math concepts. Mei's chickens have laid eggs all over her yard and she is tasked with finding and collecting them. In the process of searching for the eggs we are not only shown where they are, but Mei uses positional words to tell us where they are. Other activities are included to help your little ones further explore spatial relationships.
I absolutely adore this book. My girls LOVED searching for hidden objects in picture books. Not only that, but being Asian, they would've loved seeing a face in a children's book that resembled their own.
Many thanks to Charlesbridge for providing an ARC via Netgalley
Math...hurray! Caldecott Honor winner Grace Lin celebrates math for every kid, everywhere!
Mei, an adorable little girl, goes on an egg hunt searching for eggs that have been laid all over her yard. She discovers an egg next to a watering can, behind a flower pot, inside a wheelbarrow ... and guess where else? Under a real live chicken! Fantastic!
The young reader is invited to join her in her search and will discover spatial sense as they do.

This playful, fun book is perfect for the targeted age group: Baby-3 years old. The illustrations are bold, bright, engaging and kid-friendly. It's always wonderful when you can incorporate exploring mathematical concepts into the every day lives of kids and make it fun! I highly recommend "Where Are the Eggs?"

Another fantastic math-based story.
Mei walks through her yard, looking for where her chickens have laid their eggs. She points out the location of each egg, using prepositions and spatial relationships such as under, on, and next to.
The straightforward narration and simple story are perfect for the intended audience.
Adorable illustrations.
The backmatter contains an explanation of spatial skills as well as additional activities to help children understand spatial relationships. A great way to incorporate the concepts into everyday life.
3.5/5 Stars I got this book from Netgalley in return for my honest opinion. As a mom of 3 young girls who love chickens, eggs, and finding things, I would rate this 3.5 stars because it is quite simple but also cute and enjoyable. I would consider this for ages 2-3. My 4yo would not be interested in it after one read but I could see my 2yo being obsessed with it. It would be beneficial for learning location words like "behind" and "under". Overall, I personally wouldn't buy this book but I would borrow it from a library or something!
Where was this book when I had teenagers who could never find ANYTHING right in front of their noses!? Not a conventional book about numbers, but rather an exploration of spatial skills and the art of seeking. The illustrations by the author are fun, simple, colorful, and delightful explorations of finding eggs on the farm. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Charlesbridge via NetGalley. Thank you!
Mei's chickens have laid eggs all over the yard. Can you help her find them?
Cute illustrations, not much of an egg hunt though - it would have been more fun if the location of the egg was shown after a page turn. Funny that the finding would be so easy when, if you look at the author notes, it's a book about positions, perspective, and orientation, and includes teaching ideas. I hope it's also published in traditional binding because it seems directed to a little older child. Part of the Storytelling Math series. Mei is Asian
The eggs are under, the eggs are behind, the eggs are next to.... where will the eggs be next?
This kid's book is written and illustrated in classic Grace Lin style and if YOU don't know what that means, it means it is sure to be AMAZING!!!
Not only is this a charming tale of a little girl looking for eggs in her back yard, but this book is also a "story telling math book. This book introduces young readers about spatial relationships, and this is important for children to comprehend and recount the environment around them.
I especially love the "Try This" section at the back of the book for Parents to add to the reading experience. *FYI- if you follow Grace Lin on her Facebook page you will see some of her own chickens in her backyard :)
Grateful to have received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley & Charlesbridge.
Jack borrowed this book from the Oxford Public Library. I picked it because he loves collecting eggs at Nana’s house.
When Jack wanted to go outside but couldn’t, Nana and I read this book to him as a distraction. It worked super well. I held Jack and read the book, which Nana held for me. He loved seeing the chickens and eggs, but he didn’t want to play along with the finding part.
Again, I am a big fan of this Storytelling Math series. My two favorites so far are "What will fit?" and "A beautiful house for birds." "Where are the eggs" adds spatial logic and preposition learning to the mix: next to, behind, on, in the middle of, under. The caregiver notes on the last two pages help extend the learning.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
I'm really enjoying this series. Where's the Eggs? Is a great learning tool to share with children. Once again the Try This page gives fun ideas to try and helps reinforce the lessons learned
Emphasizing spatial reasoning, the book invites your littles to describe each egg's location in relation to other objects. (The egg is behind the pot. The egg is on top of the wheelbarrow.) A solid board book offering for toddlers.
Where Are the Eggs? introduces young children to the concept of spatial awareness using words such as, under, next to, and behind. A young girl looks for the eggs that her hens have laid around the yard. Not only is this a cute search and find book, but it does a nice job of introducing a basic math concept. Lin's illustrations provide an eye-catching, brightly-colored, appealing background. This would make a fun read between a parent and child. It would be especially fun to ask the child to spot the eggs in each illustration. Tips from Angela Chan Turrou, PhD give parents ideas for encouraging their children's curiosity and learning.
This board book series started back in October 2020. I loved the diversity in the illustrations and the fun way of introducing mathematical concepts to the youngest of readers. This one talks about spatial sense.
