This book made me want to paint! I've started a few still lifes before this book and something was missing. This author, it's like she was watching me, she knew where I was going wrong. There were so many times while reading where my mind was racing with ideas. I am totally inspired and ready to run to the canvas.
As a painter, still lifes are not my favourite subjects, but if exists a book that makes me want to paint them then this is the right one. Beautiful energetic brushwork, full of life - if you can say so of a "natura morta" (still life). Studio setup and materials, how to find your subject, planning, composition, values, thumbnail sketches, there is all the necessary without superfluous. Step-by-step exercises. Richly illustrated, well explained. Absolutely wonderful.
The artwork is exceptional. Even if you are not interested in still life’s. Painting from life is the best way to improve your skills. Sarah does an excellent job providing stimulating exercises and explains values well. Any aspiring artistry would benefit from this book. I received this galley from NetGalley.
Interesting and practical, with great illustrations. Well structured with actionable advice. Would definitely recommend for anyone with a little painting experience but perhaps new to still life concepts.
