In one devasting moment, Shay’s life changes. Catching her husband cheating on her while she’s on duty as an EMT propels her to start over. She loves helping people and when an opportunity arises, she jumps at the chance to work at Rock House Grill, owned by hotshot tv chef Aden House and his sister. She works hard and gains the respect of Aden. When the head chef has to leave, Shay steps in as the restaurant’s chef for the night. He’s a good teacher, though, and she gets hands-on training as a chef. It would be easy for her to fall in love with Aden but her heart has taken one too many beatings. She slams walls up around her heart, refusing to allow Aden in. Can these two battered souls find comfort in each other’s arms or is love not on the menu at Rock House Grill?
Rock House Grill is an incredibly uplifting story about slowing down, savoring the little miracles in life and taking a chance on love. It’s what I would call an inspirational romance but it’s so much more than that. There’s a mystery sub-plot as well as important life lessons woven throughout. The characters are likable, for the most part, and the more I read, the more I grew attached to both Shay and Aden. Man alive, there was a lot of drama and subterfuge with exes. Talk about wickedness abounding. But like in life, Shay and Aden have a multitude of obstacles to overcome in their own lives before they can come together. Their fortitude in life and love inspired me. The plot moved at a good pace with a few surprises thrown in made Rock House Grill an unputdownable read. The culinary details were 100% accurate and added depth to the story. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this romance and it’s one of the better books I’ve read this year. Highly recommend!
Favorite Character/Quote: Shay. She’s such a fascinating character. No matter how much life kicks her to the ground, she gets back up and moves forward. Her inner strength adds to her beauty and it’s easy to see why Aden falls in love with her. Shay’s a heroine every woman will love, faults and all.

Narrator’s overall voice –
Emelie Pla has a pleasing voice, and her timbre makes for an enjoyable listen. I found her sound effects for certain things like clanging dishes and such creative.
Does the narrator fit the characters?
Yes, Emelie Pla fits the characters, although there were times when I had trouble differentiating between the characters. Her voice for Aden is a lower octave which I liked.
Narrator’s reading style –
Emelie Pla’s reading style is one of reading the text and infusing her own creative whimsy into each scene.
Narrator’s impact on reading experience –
Emelie Pla is a good narrator and increases the reader’s listening experience.
Narrator’s pacing –
Emelie Pla’s pacing is a little on the slow side but adds dramatic pauses to increase the plot’s tension.
Audiobook flow –
The audiobook’s flow is smooth. The listener easily gets caught up in the brilliant story by D.V. Stone.
What makes this audiobook unique –
The storyline is what makes this audiobook unique. It’s such a moving story that will stick with the listener long after they stop listening.
3,5 - Romance readers, you will like Rock House Grill! That is if you aren't looking for steamy scenes and rush "hit first, ask later" moments!
You, who are more like me, not a contemporary romance reader, could have a nice surprise and enjoy Mrs. D.V. Stone's book as well.
Why? First of all, I get the feeling that she knows what she talks about. The EMT / hospital scenes, not large but with high impact flow... naturally. Reading the author's description confirmed my suspicions. The efficiency that (should) characterise/s the EMT activity is detectable at any step. Nothing seems too much, useless or loose. Anything that happens has its purpose and consequences relevant to the love... stories. Yes, there are more than one love story here and the main ones are well developed even if the focus point is on Shay-Aiden. Second chances mean and come in different forms.
The author plays well her words. Maybe the guys' lines are a little bit close to what women think they want to hear, but that's why we read romance, isn't it? Anyway, they have enough "toxicity" (you know that male toxicity about which some feminists complain about) for them to remain alphas and attractive. Love and passion are both present; the reader will feel them not read about them, and in my books, this is the best way!
On the suspense side, the author is successful too. She prepared the stage well, setting out the necessary clues and even red herrings at the right time, stirring the characters and readers alike. She never passes the line of "too good to be true" or "too much". There are real dangers, victims and... surprises. And the secret ingredient is... you should know it!
Of course, we will... sorry, they will get their happy ending while leaving many readers to hope and dream of theirs! Between love and danger, the pages rapidly fly away. Enjoy!
What I love most about this book is how real it feels. The scenes in the restaurant, whether they’re in the kitchen or at the front of house, feel authentic. The EMT/ambulance scenes feel like the author has lived them. And most especially the characters’ emotions feel real. I could feel Aden’s frustration and gratitude at surviving his accident, but being unable to do the things he did before. Shay’s nervousness at starting a new job at the restaurant was very real, and so was her coolness under pressure in her role as an EMT. And the way they feel about each comes through as well. I loved Aden’s reaction when he first met his “angel” after his accident. It felt totally true to the characters. The rest of the supporting cast was wonderful. They were all fully drawn characters with emotions and desires of their own. Kudos to D.V. Stone for a wonderful read!
This book is a delightful, savory, hopeful, fun, romantic, and warmhearted read!!
This book starts off in one of those totally embarrassing, please say that did not just happen moments where I totally couldn’t help but feel for Shay! EMT’s Shay and Joanna get a call and show up at a domestic disturbance scene. Shockingly this is where Shay finds out her husband Nick is there in a romantic setting with his mistress, Brenda! So embarrassing! Not only to find out your husband is cheating, but to walk into that setting with your co-workers all watching – dreadful! And the story pretty much takes off from there with many more exciting, captivating, intriguing, romantic scenes…
I really liked the main characters, Aden and Shay. They were honest, hardworking, and genuine characters. I liked that Aden was this ambitious, strong-willed, stubborn, determined, and unwavering guy. He was serious and knew exactly what he wanted, and nothing was going to stop him from achieving his dreams. I also really liked Shay! She was smart, caring, kindhearted, motivated, and thoughtful. I really liked Aden and Shay together! They were super adorable! I think many readers will be able to easily relate to and connect with Aden and Shay!
I loved the perseverance theme that is strongly weaved into the story line. These characters are driven, push hard, and never give up. It’s inspiring to see both main characters face different, but still equally difficult challenges and take them head-on. Whether it was Aden recovering emotionally and physically from his major car accident or Shay dealing with the stress and abandonment of her husband, being harassed and tormented by her husband’s mistress, and working hard to rebuild her life. They both kept looking for the silver lining and that everything happens for a reason.
This book was filled with excellent plot obstacles that the main characters had to face. They were well constructed and thoroughly thought-out. These were realistic and practical issues that real couples have to overcome, which made the story even stronger.
I couldn’t help but cheer for Aden and Shay on both personal and professional achievements – and wish success for them to make it as a couple!
This book has a powerfully positive, hopeful, optimistic, have faith themes that are beautifully incorporated into the story line.
I also really enjoyed the cooking theme in the story line! I love watching cooking competition shows and was fond of the cooking references throughout the book.
There are some predictable scenes. However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it! I think all romance, suspense readers will like this book too! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!
**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book and have voluntarily provided an honest, and unbiased review in accordance with FTC regulations.**
I requested this book hoping for a book boyfriend that I could enjoy during my camping trip. I wasn’t disappointed. Best camping trip ever thanks to Aden, the hero.
Aden spread himself too thin and paid a horrible price and suffered the consequences. I know all too well what it’s like to be stretched too thin. It was a nice reminder to relax during my camping trip. Aden was the perfect example of what to do when you get knocked down. You pick yourself up and move forward.
The heroine, Shea, was an interesting leading lady. I loved that she was a volunteer EMT. She also was an example of overcoming the hard knocks in life. Together, they left the reader with hope.
There was a side romance threaded throughout the story between Aden’s sister and his doctor. They made a sweet couple too. It was like reading a two-for-one romance story.
This was a sweet romance with a bit of suspense/mystery. I was smitten from beginning to end as I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The plot was unpredictable which added to my enjoyment.
I don’t know if this book is part of a series or not but I can see how it could be. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. I feel like the next book could be about Mason who at the end of the story, his girlfriend didn’t want to see him anymore. Or perhaps it could be about Zach who is always solo.
I thought this was an excellent book to read on my camping trip. For other readers, I definitely recommend Rock House Grill for anytime, anyplace. Just make sure to set aside enough time to enjoy this quality read.
Rock House Grill is a totally entertaining read. The charismatic characters jump right off the pages. Each one’s woven circumstances into the main story, will have you turning pages to discover what effects each has on the other and the outcome of the tale. A tragic beginning has a fortuitous intervention. This is a heartwarming story of hope, perseverance, second chances, and a belief that everything happens for a reason. I love the never-give-up theme entwined throughout this book regardless of what occurs.
The author’s scene-setting and descriptions will leave you feeling like you’ve experienced the story’s twists and turns, ups and downs, right along with the characters. My favorite kind of a book. I highly recommend this book.
So what are you waiting for? Whether you read romance, suspense, or something in-between, add Rock house Grill to your list of must-read books
D.V. Stone’s swift pace and masterful characterizations make Rock House Grill ROCK.
Love how Shay meets Aden, not once, but twice, and how well the juxtapositions play off each other to make the encounters memorable. Add drama from exes, and you have a searing plot.
A whodunit until the very end, with not one, but several romances building to a crescendo, I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced page-turner. I emphatically recommend it—no holds barred!
This engrossing story had it all, mystery, suspense, and romance, The twists and turns made it impossible to put down. . I enjoyed the supporting characters as well. I will be looking for more from this talented storyteller.
When Shay, an EMT, is called to a “domestic disturbance”, the last thing she expects to find is her husband and another woman. Her friends try to shield her, but she’s seen—and heard—too much. Months later, after the divorce, she’s working at a restaurant and the “other woman” manipulates things to get her fired. Down on her luck and her life, she takes one more chance…and finds hope and happiness at a new restaurant. This is a sweet, uplifting story about life, love, loss, and more. The characters are believable—if a bit tragic. There were a lot of nasty things happening in the story to both Shay and Aden—but they come through it all in the end.
Things I liked: Shay. She doesn’t let life get her down for long. She gets hit with one thing after another and keeps coming back. Olivia is another good character as she comes back from a devastating loss to find love again. And Eli and Margaret. Actually, the only character I didn’t care a lot for was the “hero”, Aden. He often came across as a bit self-centered, but he redeemed himself in the end, so it’s all good. The author obviously knows her stuff when it comes to EMTs and the way hospitals and ambulances work. She either did a lot of research or has done this work herself because the believability shows. Also, the “mystery” of who the villain is, is done well. The clues are there as are the real dangers to the characters.
What I didn’t like: I wish the author had told me what happened to Detective Brandt. I’d really have liked to have seen him get his as well. I really did not like him.
Recommendation: A definitely good read. Highly recommended. A sweet romance with a HEA that satisfies.
Disclaimer: I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and are not influenced by anyone or anything.
In book one in the Impact series, volunteer EMT Shay McDowell rescues a man from a horrible car crash. Her life has been rough, and though she’s just going through the motions, she enjoys helping people and dreams of becoming a chef. Things start to look up when she applies for a position at Rock House Grill. Chef, restaurant owner, and TV personality Aden House is on the verge of losing everything, but the crash was exactly what he needed to straighten out his life. Aden and Shay are great characters. They’re both flawed and stubborn. They have mutual respect for one another and an instant connection. Their romance takes second place to them living their lives, however, and doesn’t actually begin until the mid-point of the story, which made sense because Aden needed time and rehabilitation to heal from the accident. As for the heat level, there’s a little kissing, but no sex and no cursing. There are technically two couples in this book. Olivia and David (Aden’s sister and his doctor) fall in love. Part of the book follows them and their romance, which is just as clean and sweet as the main couple’s romance. I read a galley copy of this story. It’s told in alternating POV between Aden, Shay, and Olivia, but all the POV switches have proper scene and/or chapter breaks. For anyone who likes clean-cut romances with a little suspense thrown in, this book is for you. 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. The author portrayed a vivid description of the glamorous world of the high-end restaurant business. The characters were believable, and I rooted for Shay, the heroine, to overcome the many obstacles in her quest to find true love with Aden, the physically and emotionally damaged hero. With someone out to harm Shay and her new friends, the tension ramped up, and I couldn’t put the book down. The story kept me reading long into the night. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, exciting read with a satisfying ending, I recommend Rock House Grill.
I really enjoyed this book that had everything that I look for in a read. DV Stone makes you care about the characters that become your friends at the end of the story. You're drawn into the challenges they faced and the mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. She gives you insight into the bravery and caring of first responders. Looking forward to other books in this series. Reasons I enjoyed this book: EntertainingHappily Ever After, Realistic, Wonderful characters
This story pulled me in from the first page. The descriptions are so vivid, it was like a movie playing in my head and I absolutely LOVE those stories. The developing relationship between Shay and Aden was sweet but there are other couples too, so there’s more than one romance that will make you smile. Aden and Shay are both likeable characters and I just wanted them to get together already. Their histories left them with angst and insecurities that make this a slow-burn and the build-up is great.
While we watch them dance around each other, we see Shay come out of her introvert shell a bit and quickly making friends with Olivia and Margaret. There’s also a cheating ex who expects forgiveness and a bitter other woman, not to mention the woman scorned and all the first responders who can’t keep their eyes off of Shay. In addition to the great cast of secondary characters, there’s also a mystery. Yes, there’s a lot happening, but the pace is great and there’s a perfect balance to tell the stories without overshadowing the love story.
I really enjoyed Rock House Grill and couldn’t put it down.
The exciting worlds of emergency medicine and the restaurant business provide a rich backdrop for DV Stone's quick-paced, heart-stopping, and super-satisfying story. The book follows a really interesting cast of fun and diverse characters as they work through complicated pasts to find love and career fulfillment. The musical references are a hoot; the mystery keeps you guessing; and the food descriptions will have your mouth watering until the delivery guy arrives. Terrific blend of steamy but sweet romance and cozy mystery. Highly recommend!
A good solid story, well crafted, with interesting and engaging characters. Initially the cover put me off - it's kinda in-ya-face. But it's a good example of not judging a book by its cover. Received as a complimentary copy from the author via Voracious Readers Only in return for an honest review.
I received a copy of Rock House Grill from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an unbiased review. I enjoyed this book a lot. Wholesome is a word that comes to mind. I enjoyed all the emotions and the suspense. The characters and relationships are well developed. Good read.
The House twins--Aden and Olivia--may not have blood relatives around but they embrace employees and friends as if they are family. Aden is spread far too thin between running one restaurant and launching another and being a hot celebrity chef who has made a questionable relationship choice. He survives an accident with the help of an EMT he calls his angel. Shay McDowell is trying hard to get back on her feet after a divorce from a husband she couldn't trust and harassment from the new woman in his life. More than anything she wants to prove she can make it as a chef. Shay walks into Rock House Grill when Olivia House is desperately trying to keep everything running until Aden comes home. Shay offers to run the front of the house that night as her job interview and Olivia is certain she's an angel. Shay and Aden are both burdened with a lot of baggage from their pasts, but it doesn't keep them from finding the best in one another. When evil threatens their budding relationship they have to decide who to trust and to fight for their newfound love. Shay is gifted with persistence enough to make up for her sometimes flagging self confidence. She steps up to grab her golden opportunity. Aden realizes he's been given a wakeup call and another chance to realign his priorities. Olivia steps out bravely to embrace love once more. D. V. Stone has populated this story with a wonderful cast of supporting characters on the EMT squad and police force and the restaurant's employees. They add a wealth of color and richness to the tale of non-stop action and danger. Although this is book one of the Impact series and can stand alone, why would you want to leave this world the author has so artfully created? I encourage you to read this now to be ready for book two coming out in August.
I really enjoyed Rock House Grill by D.V. Stone. She was a new author for me and she writes clean, contemporary romance so I was eager to see what this story was about. I found the main characters, Aden and Shay, very easy to relate to for different reasons. Aden, a type-A all the way is so driven by his goals and ambition that he finds himself falling asleep at the wheel and in an accident that almost paralyzes him. Shay, who dreams of being a chef, is a friend to anyone in need and she seems to keep hooking up with people who bring her nothing but trouble at every turn, until she meets Aden and his sister Olivia.
One of my favorite things about this story was how real the characters felt, and how they stuck up for one another and believed in each other even when the chips were down. As Shay seems to keep getting it from every side, there were moments when I thought, a lot of people would have turned their back on this woman but Aden, Olivia and their friends Eli and Margaret believe in one another, and in their new friend Shay, excellent judges of character and good, honest people that they are. Their friendship and spirit is truly inspiring.
I loved the romance that developed between Aden and Shay and I wished they could have met face to face earlier in the story. But I can get past that because these two are so cute when they finally get together. Aden House can take me out to dinner anytime!
Not to give too much away, but I was pleasantly surprised by and greatly enjoyed the reference to the Delaware River, which is one of my favorite places to be, especially nowadays. That definitely made the story real for me. There are some great twists and turns and plenty of suspense which made for a really fun contemporary romance. I can’t wait to enjoy more stories from this author!

Savor a satisfying slice of life If you love a multi-layered story that pulls you into its world like I do, choose The Rock House Grill. The Rock House Grill (its name derives from the fabulous menu of rock songs played there) is the center of the Shay and Aden’s story. Aden House is a talented chef who has loses direction when he becomes the hot shot chef of a TV cooking show. As a devotee of those shows and their fast paced competitions, it’s easy to see how Aden could be sucked into that world without realizing how it would change his life—for the worse. Shay McDowell is a divorced part-time EMT and part-time head of the house at another local restaurant. When her cheating ex’s current squeeze makes trouble for Shay at her restaurant job, getting her fired, Shay applies for work at The Rock House Grill which is floundering since Chef Aden, distracted by his TV gig, was involved in a life threatening car accident. Little do either of them know but when Aden had his near fatal accident, it was Shay who assisted in his jaws of life rescue. I won’t give away more of the actual story. Ms. Stone has filled this slow burning romance with relatable people and realistic situations. With Shay’s dear friend, Joanna and Aden’s twin sister Olivia, other work friends and the aforementioned villainous ex, rounding out a full menu of characters, Ms. Stone has sprinkled moments of realism, sweetness, suspense, pathos, friendship and most of all, resilience. Aden needs to figure out how to recover use of his legs, save his restaurant, and importantly, preserve his friendships. Shay, a spirited survivor, is more talented than she believes, and in spite of misfortune, never lost her giving nature or gift for friendship. We get a look at some other relationships in this story and a bit of a preview of another story which I hope will be coming soon.
Adam House is a very successful chef who is burning the candle at both ends. Shay McDowell is rebuilding her life after a divorce. She volunteers as an EMT and has dreams of becoming a chef. Fate brings Adam and Shay together when Adam has a horrible car accident and Shay is one of the EMT's at the scene. All Adam can remember is that an angel rescued him. This is a very well written book. We follow Adam and Shay through turmoil and loads of drama. I was pulling for these two battered souls to find love and comfort in each other. I really enjoyed this book. There is a little bit of mystery, drama, suspense and romance. This is an excellent book and I would like to thank you for the opportunity of receiving it. I intend to pass it along.
This was my first book by author DV Stone. I enjoyed the characters and the unpredictable plot twists. I won't give away the plot, but I will say the author's emergency medical knowledge was apparent right away. I loved several things about the book--like the underlying, subtle religious tone of the book. If you like a little God with your reading, this book is for you. :-) The romance was sweet and "behind closed doors" all the way, which was treat for me because I read a lot of (and write) romance of the steamy variety. She did a great job letting me experience the characters falling in love! In short, Rock House Grill was an enjoyable, lighthearted romance that I highly recommend.
An exciting story. There was plenty of action, suspense, danger, love, family and friends. I loved both Aden and Shay. Each had their baggage but were honest with each other as misunderstandings arose. Their journey to love and commitment was not easy, but they were determined to make it. Their lives had changed and improved because of their love. I recommend this story.
I received an ARC of this story through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
D.V. Stone brings the world of restaurants and the heat of the kitchen right into your hands in this well-paced, sweet, romantic suspense story. D.V. will have readers rooting for Shay and Aden to find their way through past hurts and mistakes and into each other’s arms. If you’re looking for a great romance with lots of suspense, then Rock House Grill is the book for you.
I'm always curious to see how someone's first book is. This one is wonderful! I immediately felt in sync with the characters, and the pacing was excellent. There were enough twists and turns to keep me rapidly turning the pages. I loved the tender romance in the book. Well done D.V. Stone!
Rock House Grill is a romantic suspense mystery. It fits into several categories including “Favorite Prompt from Last Year” (audiobook), “Book with a Found Family,” and “Book with a Protagonist with a Mobility Issue.” Our hero is in a terrible car accident early in the story.
In this novel, Shay McDowell is in a tough spot. Her marriage is over, and her ex’s girlfriend is causing trouble. Poor Shay has lost her job, and all her carefully laid plans for the future are in tatters. But she’s not one to sit back and wait. Shay researches other local restaurants and decides that the Rock House Grill would be a great fit for her skill set—hostess, up-front manager, and chef. (Oh, and did I mention she’s a volunteer EMT too?) When she walks into the grill, she sees they need her. Shay finds out later the restaurant was in such dire straits because its owner and head chef was in the hospital. He’s recovering from a terrible accident, an accident she responded to and helped save Aden House from the crumpled car.
This book has a little of everything. Shay is a relatable person in so many ways. She has various interests and skills—no one-note character here. She’s also a victim of women hating on other women. We still compete so fiercely with each other instead of standing together. Shay does find a wonderful sisterly bond with Aden’s sister.
I want to congratulate Ms. Stone for her use of music. The digital and print are published through a small press. There’s no way such a house could afford to put lyrics in the story. It’s too costly. But D.V. worked around that by hinting at the songs, giving the book a full flavor of music without the extra price tag.
I listened to the novel on audio. For those who are hesitant to grab a title in any format by small presses or Indie authors, this production can ease your mind. The reader was excellent, and the quality of the book—both the story and the production were top-notch.
If you are looking for a story with all the elements—music, food, and tons of romance and suspense, grab this one now. The sequel, Jazz House, will be available on August 31, 2022.
