'Wild Ride' is the history of the Cobb and Co coaching firm in Australia. It is also the history of the opening up of the inland of the eastern part of the country during the latter part of the 18th century and early 20th century. Cobb and Co were much more than public transport - they were a major mail contractor and had extensive pastoral holdings, partly to provide for the huge numbers of horses required to keep the coaches on the punishing schedules required for mail deliveries. In the end, the firm foundered, partly because of the huge ambitions of James Rutherford, one of the founders of the firm, which led to discord within the partners. However, it was also overtaken by the growth of the railways and the increasing use of motor vehicles. It is an interesting story, especially so, because my home town, Bathurst, was the headquarters of the firm for much of its existence.
