Mostly an excuse to show off the paintings in King Ludwig's Beauty Gallery, which is a collection of portraits of women who King Ludwig I of Bohemia found beautiful. The portraits are kept at the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, which I was able to visit several years ago, and I picked up the book there. The author includes several essays on the concept of beauty galleries, the formation of this specific one, Ludwig himself, and art history. It's an interesting book, but if you're not very interested in art or specifically interested in this specific Beauty Gallery, it's probably not worth your time.
The beauties, in Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, were painted by court painter Joseph Stieler at the behest of King Ludwig I in 1827-50. I have been there, but could only get assorted postcards. This book has nice reproductions of all 36 portraits. Quite lovely.
