Blood of the Warlord

Rate this book
The warlord, his son and even his grandchildren are all dead. Sacrificed by kings who used them. Now King Henry asks the great-grandsons of the Warlord to help his son, The Lord Edward, learn how to rule. Sent with too few men and too many enemies, Sir Henry Samuel, Sir Alfred and the newly knighted Sir Thomas must learn how to use their skills, not in the familiar borderlands but in Gascony where insurrection and treason have reared their heads.

I was born in 1950 in Lancashire and attended a boy’s grammar school. After qualifying as an English and Drama teacher in 1972, I worked in the North East of England for the next 35 years. During that time I did write, mainly plays, pantos and musicals for the students at the three schools in which I worked.

When I stopped teaching I set up my own consultancy firm and worked as an adviser in schools and colleges in the North East of England. The new Conservative Government ended that avenue of work and in 2010 I found that I had time on my hands; having started work at the age of 15 I found the lack of work not to my liking and used the time to research the Roman invasion of Britain and begin to create a novel. The result was The Sword of Cartimandua.

My decision to begin writing was one of the best I have ever taken.

Seamless Action

It is virtually impossible to get bored reading one of Griff's stories. This one is no exception - politics, Pirates, sieges, lawless mercenaries and noble knights to protect the afflicted. That may sound trite but in this tale it all comes together seamlessly. A good read!

A surprising 4* for this book from a series that has been a 3* throughout.

There were a couple of things that took it above and beyond.

Firstly, Hosker used the famous-person-well-documented-in-history-goes-somewhere-incognito and has an un-recorded adventure.

This provides a reason for the 'Stockton Boys' to travel to the continent. It allows an interesting storyline which allows them to go attacking/defending a couple of castles - always a winner in a medieval military combat story, for me.

Secondly, Mr H managed to confound my expectations twice in the story.

Once he set up a 'ruthless villains attack peaceful loving villagers' scenario which didn't go the way I assumed it would. The other time an introduced villain does not get his expected just deserts- quite the opposite, in fact.

Both occasions surprised me - well played Mr Hosker:)

That said we have another bride found for a character when she is rescued from baddies and falls instantly in love 'the second she lays eyes upon him'.

I think this is the fifth or sixth time this has happened in GH's books.

4* - just, though:)

NOTHING MORE ENTERTAINING THAN READING GRIFF HOSKER

I don’t think this will be the final book about the Warlord and his family. At least I hope not.

I have read almost every story that Griff Hosker has published. I have two series to catch up on and I will have read all his wonderfully told stories.

There is absolutely no one better writing historical fiction!!
