Tasty Home: Life Skills is an accessible and useful collection of tips and tricks for home and organization curated by the staff of Tasty Home on Buzzfeed and on their popular YouTube channel. Due out 7th Nov 2023 from Simon & Schuster on their Adams Media imprint, it's 176 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is Tasty Home in print format. It's a collection of useful, interesting, and "oh, I never thought of that" tips and tricks for streamlining and learning skills, from sensible kitchen organization to sewing on a button. Many (possibly most) are things which folks of yesteryear either took for granted (clothes maintenance, since they didn't *have* duplicates) or weren't an issue at all (digital and electronics clutter).
The book is arranged in chapters of short, bite sized tips: cleaning & organizing, home decor & improvement, clothing & laundry, cooking & entertaining, beauty & wellness, and gardening & outdoors. There's also an index, to make specific tips easier to find. The info is arranged in paragraph length short entries, with several per page in each category. Many are quite sensible and potentially obvious, but many of them are ingenious, creative, and time saving.
It's well illustrated and full of colorful clear photography throughout. The writing style is upbeat and easily accessible.
Four stars. This would be a good public or school library acquisition, and a great "care package" moving out gift (bundled with cleaning supplies and housewares) to newly fledged young adults living on their own for the first time.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
For those who find "adulting" overwhelming, here's a simple guide that will help you sort out the chaos that's your life. Tasty Home : Life Skills tells you what needs to be done in order to have a tidier home and take better care of yourselves.
The concept of this book really is interesting, since a lot of young adults don't know how to do basic household chores and often don't know where to begin. I liked the tone of voice that was fun (with some sarcasm here and there) and accessible to everyone (simple, clear instructions). There are six main chapters, each one of them addresses a particular topic : Cleaning & organizing, home decor and improvement, clothing & laundry ...etc. I loved that each chapter provides a list of basic stuff to purchase in order to be properly equipped (Cleaning supplies, basic first aid supplies, safety items, cookware ...etc)
I found some chapters more useful and better organized than others. The first one, Cleaning & organizing, was interesting and provided super helpful checklists, but I didn’t find Home decor and improvement as good (a three line paragraph isn’t enough to convince me to try changing a broken tile !). In my opinion, the book would’ve been way more useful with more illustrated DIY’s, I only remember seeing a couple of them, most pictures looked like stock images that didn’t have any particular utility. It made me wonder why one would buy this book instead of watching Tasty videos really …
Thank you NetGalley and Tasty Home for giving me access to this e-ARC for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Tasty Home: Life Skills is a great resource for first-time homebuyers and those moving out for the first time.
Our household is familiar with the Tasty brand, particularly their popular YouTube channel, and cookbooks. The Life Skills book from Tasty turned out to be the perfect guide for us! The book contains short yet valuable tips on home repairs, cleaning, and organization. I would be willing to bet that the average person does not sanitize their cellphones or keyboards (or at least routinely). Tasty's new book can help you with that. What about that pile of junk sitting on the floor in your extra bedroom? The book lists items people often let pile up, which can significantly reduce clutter if organized properly. But it's not only about cleaning and organizing. Tasty Home: Life Skills also features sections on essential home improvement projects like patching holes, using a stud finder to hang that picture frame that's been leaning against the wall for months, and even an inventory list of what should be in your first toolbox.
Tasty Home: Life Skills is packed with tons of amazing tips and tricks that will help you learn some new skills. The book presents the information in a clean and minimalistic format, making it easy to reference quickly.
This was a handy little book with actionable advice for readers of all levels of homemaking, but trying to balance environmentalism with convenience put some of the advice at odds with each other—Tasty Home advising readers to buy refillable laundry detergent powders to avoid the excess plastic of jugs, then later suggesting to put your hand in a plastic bag to avoid direct contact when chopping spicy peppers. Overall, this book serves as a good primer on various aspects of housekeeping—even including tips on outdoor decorating and gardening for the more bougie readers—and would make an excellent gift for college-bound teens living on their own for the first time.
Definitely a great book to have around the house! Definitely had a good amount of tricks and tips that could come in handy. Would definitely buy for a college student or young adult who just moved into a new home! Hope to see Tasty do some more books! Loved their content back when they were on YouTube.
This is a good first time home buyer book. It should be in in all your friends homewarming gifts. It's simple and easy to read and comprehend. I just wish it was more than we got. It seemed some chapters were fleshed out and so helpful when other chapter got a paragraph but should have been equally fleshed out
Fun book that gives general tips and hacks for homemaking. A lot of it is common sense, but in today's world, common sense can be a rare commodity, so this book is great!
I find these type of books informative, useful and relaxing. This is full of useful ideas Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This is a great guide to all kinds of general tips for your home and life hacks. From storage to cooking to home decor and everything in between, it provides great tips and hacks to make your life easier regardless of what aspect of your life you are working on.
