Oath of Sacrifice

Rate this book
I'll make her my wife, even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice.

I've loved Rosa Rossi for so long, it feels as natural as breathing.
But our love is forbidden. Taboo.
Fire.

If we're discovered,
My life is forfeit,
And she'll be exiled forever.

But I know...

I see through every glance sent my way
I feel every pulse of her heart.

Now her life is danger,
And she's under my protection.
My job to keep her safe.

The woman will obey me, or suffer the consequences.

Just finished my ARC of Santo's and Rosa's story and it was amazing! They are absolutely my favorite couple in the series. I think the May be the hottest slow burn ever but it works out beautifully! I was a bit confused in the beginning - but I know Jane never disappoints so I kept reading and the further I got the more and more I needed to know. It was worth the wait!!!!!

Sadly, I ended up skimming this. I say "sadly" because it contains everything I usually like: a more mature couple who converse like adults, a MMC who will do anything for the woman he loves, consent, an organic conflict, detailed backstories, and a complex narrative that shifts back and forth between the past and the present as we witness how foundling Santo came to love the daughter of the mafia head who takes him in (shades of Wuthering Heights) -- so, no instalove, which is always a plus. Unfortunately, all this is wasted on too many internal monologues, an obstacle that we're assured is too much for the couple to overcome until it's...not, and a anti-climatic ending.

I've also come to the conclusion after many, many, many books that this author's writing style is just not for me. It isn't so much the plot holes, distorted timelines, editing issues, and character motivations that change on a dime that have ultimately defeated me as the self-indulgent writing, too much detail in the wrong places and too little in the right, and slow-moving plots that end in a rush. I prefer my prose more economical and my pace tighter; I find with age (and the pandemic) that I have less and less patience for the repetition that far too many of these generic authors engage in.

I'm not rating this because I think some of this is a "me" problem: I realize that other readers love the multiple dual POVs in which the MC express how much they love each other. I get the appeal of this kind of melodramatic, all-the-feels dialogue/internal monologues (as the kids say today). I just want to hear less of it.

And the hits just keep coming! In the fourth book from Jane Henry's "Deviant Doms" series, 'Oath of Sacrifice' brings us the story of Rosa Rossi, the oldest child, and Santo. If you've been following this series then you know Santo has been exiled to Tuscany to work the vineyards and Rosa is now living at the Castle with her daughter Natalia since becoming a widow. What I didn't know was these two have had a special closeness and bond since Santo was brought into the family at ten years old. He's been labeled a sociopath. She holds the title of Ice Princess. But these two have more heart and heat than anyone else so far. What a spectacular storyline!

Tedious

I slogged through this one even though it was the one Rossi book I couldn't wait for. It was repetitive. I understood early on the risk Santo and Rosa were taking. But it was basically the whole of their internal dialog and and there was SO MUCH internal dialog. It was work to get through it. Still a good story but probably could have been 100 pages shorter.

Slow moving and hard to follow because I didn’t know it was part of a series. The book summary said stand alone but it’s not. This story fell flat for me.

This is the fourth story in Jane Henry's "Deviant Doms" series and although it is a standalone I would urge reading the series in sequence to get the maximum enjoyment.
Santo knew that Rosa was promised to another for a second time, it was unbearable, even though he knew that they could never be together it was tearing his heart out.
Santo had been rescued as a wayward child by Narcisco, the Don of the high ranking Rossi mafia family, he had been brought up with the Rossi children, Romeo, Tavi, Orlando, Mario, Marialena and Rosa, as a brother but he was always aware that he wasn't a brother, he always felt like the hired help even though the siblings didn't treat him that way........he had made a promise to Narcisco that they didn't know about
Sando always felt closer to Rosa when they were growing up, he opened up to her like no other, they had secret trysts and he was devastated when Rosa was entered into an arranged marriage with another man, mafia women didn't marry for love they were used to create alliances with other mafia families. When Rosa's husband died she moved back to the Rossi castle with Natalia her six year old daughter, she didn't know it yet but she was already promised to another.
This story follows the journey of Rosa and Santo, their love that was palpable, the passion that could come to nothing, the lengths that Santo would go to to keep Rosa and Natalia safe, the anguish and the heartache, the power struggle between the mafia families, the rough justice meted out.
This is a beautifully told story with brilliant characters, the Rossi family are like old friends, I couldn't put it down and I can't wait to read the next book in this great series.
I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.

KU READ. This is one of my fav couples in the series but I'm still not happy with the structure and pay off in the end. A huge chunk of angst was missing smh. The first 70% rock and then something happens that quickly derails the book and rushes it to the end :(

*4.5 Star Read*

When I started this book, my first impression was that the story would be a slow burn. The past is mixed in with the present, and I could visualize the plot heading in that direction. Slow burns are not my favorite, but I was still ready to dive in.

Oath of Sacrifice - Sacrifice being the key word.

Rosa has sacrificed enough, but she's well-aware that she's just a commodity in a man's world. A widow, she realizes that she may be forced to suffer through another arranged marriage. This time, it may just finish her off.

Santo was adopted into the Rossi Family at a young age, but Rosa was never his sister. She was the the crown jewel that he could never have. If his adopted brothers knew their history, Santo would have to sacrifice his life.

Now, here's where it gets crazy.

I would say that within the first 25% of this book, I started to feel like I had this heavy weight on my chest. I wasn't having a panic attack that I knew of, but something was clearly off. It would get worse with every page that I finished. Sure, we get emotionally invested in books, but this was something else. It wasn't until I saw another reader's comments that the light bulb clicked on. I was so entrenched in Rosa and Santo's story that I forgot to breathe. Literally! I was holding my breath between pages. If that's not an incentive to pick up a book, then I don't know what is.

Ah Santo. The not-quite Rossi and the man with all the secrets and the biggest secret of them all is Rosa in Jane Henry’s Oath of Sacrifice. Now I have to say, if you’ve been reading the Deviant Doms series, then you know that Santo is leaving everyone with questions. So, very many, questions. It wasn’t looking good for him in just about every book because as much as he seemed like he was team Rossi, there was always something left unsaid. AND, obviously, if you’re as much of a Jane Henry fan as I am, you know this has been a long game for readers while we waited for his story, which rightly begins with his punishment. Admittedly, I wouldn’t mind being punished that way because it sounds divine, but that’s me. So, I really liked this book. I loved reading Santo’s backstory and how hard it was to be part of the family, yet apart. And then there was Rosa, knowing she was loved by her brothers, but also very much a commodity in their eyes. Their forbidden love hit me in the feels. And since this IS part of a series, we have more of what’s going on with the brothers and it also seems as though their love of food extends to the sisters and wives as well, which made me laugh. Good for them.

I have been eagerly awaiting the story of Santo since book 1 and was not disappointed. This was a hauntingly beautiful story and made me so sad for the lost time between Rosa and Santo but the build up just made the HEA all that much sweeter. Romeo has been my favourite Rossi from the start and he really came through for his sister in this book, cementing himself as my number 1. This series has been amazing so far and I cannot wait to see who the next book will be about. A huge 5 stars from me.

Oath of Sacrifice
Deviant Doms
By: Jane Henry
Narrated by: Kai Kennicott, Wen Ross

Jane Henry creates some of the best mafia worlds, including the “Deviant Doms” which is set in the “Rossi Family” mafia world. Each book features different lead characters and stands on their own, but to get the most of the phenomenal world building it is best to enjoy them in order written. Characters appear in each other’s books and it is beneficial to know their back story, plus seeing them again is like seeing an old friend. That said, it included everything you need to know about the characters featured in the descriptive details and you never feel lost or if you are missing anything. This book is Rosa Rossi, the older sister and Santo, the honorary Rossi who was adopted into the family when he was young. Rosa knew it was her duty to marry whoever her father chose for her, but that did not stop her from wanting or falling in love with Santo and him with her, but nothing could ever come of it. Santo’s exile to Tuscany did not lessen his feelings for her and when his visit back to the Rossi’s compound turns into an extended stay because there is another power play against the Rossi’s he gets to spend time with her and he rethinks his oath. Rosa is staying in the castle with her daughter, Natalia, and Santo is protecting her because of the threat against the family. The chemistry and love between these two is strong to deny and when they give in to it, it is smoking hot and explosive. A lot goes on in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, action, twists and turns, thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions and sizzling romance. Jane Henry, thank you for another amazing story and wild and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧 📚🎧 And for the fantastic narration, Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross continue to do an amazing job portraying these characters and do so with a complete understanding of who they are and are believable in every role they play. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into their performance, having you feel every single one. Kennicott and Ross are a great team, the quality of their audio is top-notch and they are consistent with their performances. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another amazing listen.

Oath of Sacrifice
Deviant Doms 4
By: Jane Henry
Narrated by: Kai Kennicott, Wen Ross

Did you ever have one of those days when you needed to listen to a story you knew was going to be good? One of those go to authors and narrators? This combination of Jane Henry along with Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross is exactly what I needed. Plus I love this series! This is the 4th book in the Deviant Doms series, and it features Rosa and Santo! I have been waiting for Santo's story, the one who was taken in, groomed and exiled to Tuscany. Now back, still in love with Rosa, the girl who is considered his sister, though he never saw her that way and ready to help his family in any way he can. Rosa is a widow with the most adorable daughter. She too has had feelings for Santo, but for obvious reasons, they could not be together. Now it's years later, circumstances have changed and the two are trying to keep it all a secret. But when danger comes to the family, and Santo has to keep her and Natalia safe, and their secret may be revealed. How will the family react? Will he be sent back to Tuscany? Will he be able to keep them safe? How will the circumstances in the family change? In true Jane Henry fashion, I was pulled into this story, enjoyed visiting with family I know from previous books and absolutely fell for Santo and Rosa. Henry has a knack for weaving her stories together, making them feel like being part of the family and being part of the danger and love. Rosa and Santo are explosive with their chemistry and I couldn't help be love Natalia. A great addition to the series and can't wait for more.

Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross are so good in this series, it's a pleasure to listen to them. They understand Henry's stories and let us enjoy the consistent voices from book to book. Kennicott as Rosa is a strong woman, knows what she wants and with her voice we can hear her hesitancy, sacrifice and love. She also creates the perfect little girl sound for Natalia! Coming in as the confident, alluring Santo, it is impossible not to fall for Ross's voice. He is smooth as silk, gives Santo that edge of danger and sensuality he oozes around Rosa. Amazing performances that were just what I needed!

Good story, just not what I expected, so not my favorite in the series

This is the long awaited story of Rosa and Santo, fourth book in the Oath series. Long awaited because I was Expecting great things for Rosa and Santos story. He was the mysterious, scarred and scary adopted son, raised from a young boy to do the dirty work the biological sons didn't have to do. She was the eldest sister, the mafia princes married off to secure an alliance and sent to Italy only to be mistreated and cheated on before finally becoming a widow and moving back home with her daughter.

We've know, or at least suspected, from previous books in this series that there is a special bond between Rosa and Santo. We learn more about that bond, how it started and how deep it goes in this book. But promises made to a dead man as well as fear that her brothers will see it as a betrayal have kept them apart. This story is about their inner battle between their love for each and loyalty to the family while in the midst of an attack on their family that forces them into close proximity.

While I did enjoy this story, I have to say, I was a little let down. Perhaps I was expecting too much, or maybe because it just wasn't what I'd been expecting. Instead of an enemies to lovers story as the previous ones were, this one was more of a star-crossed lovers one. Santo has been portrayed as this scary, controlling, emotionless man; the mysterious one who did the family's dirty work. We got very little of that man in this book. In ths story it was more of a love lorn Santo struggling between his love and desire for Rosa and his loyalty to the family and the promise he'd made. And Rosa was a willing partner but feared her brothers would see it as a betrayal and kill Santo. For me this was a little sweeter love story than the others, relying on the back story of the attack on the family for the excitement and te lovers' struggle between their wants and fear of the brothers reaction for the angst.

All in all still a good story and excellent series so far. Think I'm going to enjoy the next one more, Mario and Emma's story.

So much Yesssss!

Why did I sleep on this one?! I love this author, and have loved this series. For some reason I waited to read this one. Now that books after this one I’m the series are released I finally dove in, and I could kick myself for waiting.

Santo has been an enigma in the previous books, and I wasn’t sure what to think about him and it made me hesitant for his story somehow. As the only non-blood brother, the boy the Rossi father took in and took under his wing, he was lethal and his loyalty had been questioned. There was so much more than meets the eye with him though, and with Rosa. She was the regal ice princess, the eldest Rossi sibling, and widowed mother to an adorable daughter. She knew her lot in life and locked down emotions like a savage. Both she and Santo have harbored secrets for years, and both suffered so much pain and loss. They really are a perfect match, even though being together seemed impossible. There seemed no way for them to be together, and I was angry at Romeo on their behalf as he had the power as the head of the family and everyone knew he would kill Santo of he found out. I should have had faith!

A whole lot going on in this book, lots of drama with other families and trying to find who is behind things. A lot of stolen moments for Rosa and Santo. And of course, a happy ending these two tortured souls deserve. One bright spot to holding out is that I can slide right into the next book in the series, and I definitely will be jumping right in.

A simply wonderful read, great characters and storyline I thoroughly enjoyed
This was simply wonderful read it was so dark and the characters were so well written and the storyline was simply fantastic. It was a complicated read that meant that you would find yourself drawn into the plot fully and without a doubt I started reading this book and was unable to put it down until I reached the end and discovered what the outcome was.
Santo was a wonderful character I have been looking forward to reading all about him and the interaction with Rosa who is a simply marvellous character from my other reads and I am sure that you will find that she was a woman with a huge heart, that loved the way she interacted with Santo.
It is fair to say that the progress of Rosa and Santo’s relationship having not starting from the usual place, the working at their relationship was wonderful and by the end of the book the way in which they had come together was simply terrific and I found it impossible to put the book down until I discovered the outcome.
I do not want to spoil the plot so will say no more about the three of them, I assure you that you will enjoy every single moment of this book.
I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read.
I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.

IT’S FOR THE BEST

The fourth story in this series, Deviant Doms, had this reader engrossed in the tale and kept the pages turning as the story unfolds. It is a mixture of family, loyalty, secrets, lies, betrayal, mystery, suspense, life and death, danger, and an action romance. I genuinely believe that this was my favorite in this fantastic series.

The story begins in Italy at the Rossi estate over the vineyard operations where Santos has been banned. Tavi has come to take care of the family business and shares that it appears that Romeo has agreed to a marriage between Rosa and one of the Campanelles—a rival family. Santo will be allowed to come to Boston for a short stay as they initiate a new member into the family. But, things start happening, and Romeo allows him to stay; he needs all his people present.

Romeo is arrested when the warehouse is raided. Santo was leaving the next day but received orders to stay. Tavi is temporarily in charge. Someone blows up Santo’s car outside the warehouse, and The Castle is going on a soft lock-down. Tavi calls in the Montavios, cousins on their mother’s side. Mario and Santo will visit Carmine Campanelle and end it with a smackdown and threats. “We just threw a grenade at the Camapanelles.”

The story is one of the sweetest because between Rosa and Santo is an intimate understanding full of emotions. Rosa has already been betrothed into one marriage and is a widow with a daughter. She has no idea that Romeo has plans for her, and yet Santo does, tearing him apart. She is the one he cares about, but there can never be anything between them. He must protect her—but he should never touch her. Santo is asked to protect Rosa and Natalia when danger affects the Rossi family. It won’t just be watching out for them; it will include staying in their private wing. The feelings between these two aren’t one-sided; she wants him too—but he must be cautious.

“All we have is the present. The past is gone, and we may never have a future.”

Rosa: Why, Santo?
Santo: You know why, baby. You know.
Rosa: But I want to hear you say it.
Santo: Because you’re my addiction, and I don’t want a cure.

“There are no cameras in these rooms, Rosa. We’ll have visitors; you know that. We’ll have places to go, and we can’t make anyone suspicious. But while I’m here and you’re here, we’ll have the privacy we need.”

“Santo’s a twisted man. His taste for the dark side infiltrates every part of who he is.”

The story will have Rosa and Santo skirting what they know could lead to his death and her banishment to another family in marriage. These two have an invisible leash that tethers them to one another and an understanding that keeps them going. I love the chemistry between Santo and Rosa—even Natalia adores him. He would literally risk it all, give up his life, to keep them safe. The story has a twist of life and death danger—a bullet---a life nearly forfeited—and a declaration. Will Santo and Rosa survive the threat, and where will it lead them?

“Santo dedicated his whole life to my family. He took oaths that nearly broke him. And now? Now I’ll take oaths of my own, to the man who means everything to me.”

love & angst

Y’all - I just finished Oath of sacrifice, book four in Jane Henry’s Deviant Doms series, and — spoiler alert — it’s my favorite!!!

Santo, adopted son of the Rossi mob family, has been in Tuscany, exiled by the Don. He is allowed to return home for a brief visit when the family is attacked, so he is allowed to stay. What no one knows is that he and oldest Rossi sister Rosa have been in love for years. If anyone finds out, Santo will most likely be killed. While the family is under threat, Santo is assigned to be Rosa’s guard which conveniently allows them to sneak in some time together. Santo knows secrets - he knows that Rosa is promised to wed a member of another mob family, a secret that Rosa doesn’t even know. He is also withholding a big secret about himself. Though deeply in love, Rosa and Santo have resigned themselves to never truly being together.

This book is everything! Love stories filled with angst and longing and lust are my favorite, and this one hits all the right spots! Per usual, Henry has written a great story. She continues to build the Rossi world and fill it with strongly written, interesting, and fun characters. Since the first book in the series, Oath of Silence, I’ve been curious about Santo. He’s mysterious, dangerous, and secretive — I’ve often wondered if his loyalties to the Rossi family were true. Rosa is so stoic and accepting of the sacrifices she must make for her family, it’s heartbreaking.

Oath of Sacrifice is a stand-alone book within an interconnected series. You can read it alone, but I believe you’ll have a better reading experience of you start with book one. Either way, be sure to let me know what you think. I’d love to discuss it with you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gripping

I've marked all other of the Deviant Doms books so far as five stars and the this one is no different as far as the story of love between the two main characters go!! However this time I've taken a star off, not because this story wasn't as good, but due to the fact, that each book had some really bad mistakes in them, that should have been picked up and this book has the most, so I've taken a star off for that reason!!
As far as the story goes, it's just as gripping and exciting as the prior three books!! It keeps you gripped from the start and it excites you to the end!! But let's be honest did Any one expect any different?!?! Since the first book, after Romeo saw them leaving the war room one after the other it was absolutely obvious!! But oh did I cry after the attack and the loss.....But I won't go into that otherwise I'll end up giving out a big spoiler and no one likes people who do spoilers!! Just know to make sure you have plenty of tissues for this one girls!! Not every story has to end with a HEA but we can all hope can't we?!?!
As for recommending absolutely!! Buy buy buy and then get a cup of coffee, curl up in your comfy chair and get stuck in, I promise you won't be able to put the book down until it's done 😉😉

Deliciously written….4 Stars!

A forbidden love, secret longings and secret dreams of two people who loved each other since they were young but it is not allowed. Santo was adopted when he was a young boy by the Rossi family, the biggest and most powerful Mafia Crime Syndicate of New England. He was trained by his adoptive father himself of the mafia ways and loved like a son. Tosca, her adoptive mother loved him like her own son. Rosa, the beautiful daughter of the Rossi’s had been in love with him since the day he came to live in the Rossi Castle. Their feelings were mutual but she was matched to wed another mafia alliance and lived in Tuscany. The have a cute daughter. She suffered abuse and betrayal from her husband until Santo was sent to make her husband “disappear”. Back in Boston, they know they can’t be together so they were discreet when meeting each other at their hidden rendezvous. How are these two gonna be together when they’re supposed to be siblings? The angst and sadness of their situation is heartbreaking. This was a good read and I enjoyed it.

Since I just finished this, I feel like it's my favorite story in the series, but I know that I feel that way about every book Jane Henry writes. This one had more heartache that made me connect to the characters more. The danger isn't just tied to the family, but Santo and Rosa could be risking it all for their love. There are oaths that have been taken, rules that must not be broken, and roles they must each play. How much are they willing to sacrifice for their love?

This is a very exciting, fast-paced read that has all the danger, excitement, love, passion, and heat that a reader could want. There were moments that made me laugh and some that brought tears to my eyes. Others got my heart racing and heated my blood. Then there were the moments that just gave me a sense of peace and the ending gave me hope. It had it all!

Rosa & Santo ❤️❤️❤️

This was one of my favorite books of this series. Santo has been an honorary member of the Rossi family since he was a little boy but his feelings for Rosa Rossi has never been anything brotherly. However, his oath to the family never allowed them to be together openly but they both have so much passion and desire for each other that they are willing to sacrifice that for the family.

Santo is back from his exile and he wants nothing more than to claim Rosa as his own. He’s done hiding but their enemies are making things difficult and he has to make sure they are safe because once he reveals his feelings Romeo may kill him for his betrayal. Buckle up for this wild ride. It is worth every hot, sexy, and sinful and oh so dominating second. Happy Reading!!
