This is a compilation of church stories regular ordinary people submitted that brought tears to my eyes several times. It was encouraging and challenging to read how local churches surrounded people in difficult circumstances and provided them with real, tangible help — everything from thousands of dollars of debt relief to meals for a whole summer to cleaning people’s houses to driving in the middle of the night to be with someone at a hospital, etc.
Phylicia is very clear that this compilation of stories is not meant to minimize anyone with church hurt — that can be very real and painful. But it is meant to give hope, and to challenge us to step in and BE the church we want to see.
I'm so grateful this book exists. It's filled with stories of how the church, in many countries, regions, denominations, and circumstances, has touched and transformed lives through the Gospel. Since it is an anthology, the impact and quality of the entries naturally varies, but as a whole, it's an edifying and worthwhile read.
