As Alicia Hunter Pace, Stephanie Jones and Jean Hovey write contemporary romantic comedy and light fantasy with a distinct southern voice.
Stephanie lives in Jasper, AL, where she teaches third grade and wishes for a bigger bookstore. She is a native Alabamian who likes football, civil war history, and people who follow the rules. She is happy to provide a list of said rules to anyone who needs them.
Jean, a former public librarian, lives in Decatur, AL, with her husband in a hundred-year-old house that always wants something from her. She likes to cook but has discovered the joy of Mrs. Paul's fish fillets since becoming a writer.
I loved the characters (especially Robbie) and the story. The narration was the absolute best part of this; Courtney Patterson crushed it! I will definitely be seeking out more she narrates. There is not really any spicy bits here, but the story is super sweet. Highly recommend listening to this! Much love to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for my DRC.
3.5 stars- pretty good. Loved Robbie. Tough to warm up to her and their connection. Clean romance ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I wasn’t looking for a hockey romance when I went looking for this book. I’m not usually one to read sports romance. It’s not a genre that I particularly get into.
However, there was something that struck me about the synopsis and I really did enjoy the main character, Robbie.
He definitely made the entire story with his quirkiness and interesting look at life. He also had a very unique work history and is bursting with life.
One thing that saddened me was the fact he fell for a woman I had a hard time liking. She was intense, brusque, and didn’t always treat him well. I had a difficult time with their connection.
When that happens to me, it can somewhat put a damper on a romance story. I really enjoyed everything about this book except her. Maybe if the author brought heat and fireworks, it would’ve mellowed her out a little bit.
As it was I would consider this pretty close to a clean romance. I felt it was missing the intensity and the passion between the two characters. There is no doubt he cared for her, she didn’t recognize it and that was heartbreaking.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, it has some fun interactions, great friendships, and a sweet ending. But I really wanted Robbie to have a different type of love, for his sake.
I've found a new narrator to add to my list of favorites! I rarely think a female narrator can do a great job of a male voice, but Courtney Patterson rocked it and the Scottish accent! If you love audiobooks, this one was fantastic. Not only for the awesome narration but also for the story itself.
I loved both main characters. They were as opposite as you could get and still complimented each other. It did take a lot of hurdles for Courtney to believe it, but when she did, I admired her humbleness.
Robbie was the life of the party and he had so much charm. I could see why Courtney with her Type A personality struggling with his carefree one, but you really do see how much she needed that in her life. Plus he was so sweet and protective, you'd be crazy not to love him.
Three and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭒ Smooth as Silk by Alicia Hunter Pace is her second book in the Good Southern Women series and can be read as a stand-alone. The small-town magic of Laurel Springs combined with the competitive spirit of the professional hockey players makes for a unique backdrop to this story.
Hyacinth Dawson owns Laurel Springs's only bridal boutique, Trousseau, and she has plans to build up the business so she can afford employees and she can devote her time to wedding dress designing. Keeping schedules, making lists, and sticking to her plan isn’t enough for her to grow her business, she also wants to get a celebrity client so she can be on a wedding dress show and take her business to the next level.
Robbie McTavish is a defenseman for the Birmingham Yellowjackets hockey team. His family runs a wedding business back in Scotland in the “wee castle” his family owns. When he peeks in the window at Trousseau, he sees a woman in a wedding dress that is all wrong for her, and he can’t just let a woman get married in a dress that isn’t right, so he barges into the shop to try and fix it. Naturally, Hyacinth isn’t happy about the intrusion, and when a video of the disruption goes viral, Hyacinth believes her business is ruined. But, the wedding show producer calls her up and wants to film an episode in her shop, she’s elated until they tell her the one condition is that Robbie must be in the show with her.
It was fun to go back to Laurel Springs, and I enjoyed visiting with Evans and Jake from the first book in the series, Sweet as Pie. I enjoyed Robbie and his over-the-top personality. His wild, fly by the seat of his pants attitude is perfect for the hockey rink, but not when it comes to dealing with the schedule-obsessed Hyacinth. Robbie and Hyacinth had some good banter, but I didn’t feel any chemistry between them. I thought Hyacinth was too harsh for Robbie, although she did warm up a bit near the end of the story. I enjoyed the first book in the series a bit more than this one, but I’m still looking forward to her next book in this series. I recommend Smooth as Silk to anyone who enjoys a sports romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Hyacinth Dawson’s dream is to land a spot on the popular reality show “All Dressed in White”. She is organized, detailed and a bit anal and runs a bridal shop. She needs to land a celebrity client and there are NHL players in her local town. She meets Robbie McTavish, a Scottish defenseman when he makes a “not so great” impression. Robbie inserts his opinions on a bridal gown choice, and that does not set well with Hyacinth. They have a heated exchange, which is videotaped. Needless to say Robbie’s family owns a premier wedding venue so he knows his way around the bridal world and has opinions. Immediately their personalities clash, but there is an attraction and they need to work together, when the popular bridal show “ All Dressed in White” sees a viral video of the couples heated exchange. What comes next is basically a truce with a lot of conditions, so they can work together to full fill both their desires? Will they be able to work together? Can they compromise? Will Hyacinth’s dreams come true?
Hyacinth is a somewhat strong character with a slightly wounded/ uncertain side due to her childhood while Robbie is a happy go lucky person. They were made to compliment each other and I liked the couple...
While the first 50% of the book felt a bit slow, I enjoyed the second half a lot.
Will surely read the first one in the series while eagerly waiting for the next one.
In this second book in the Good Southern Women series, we get to see Hyacinth, the second of the three BFFs, find her happily ever after. It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend you read the first book in the series to get the full story of this trio of friends. Hyacinth owns a wedding gown store, Trousseau, and wants to move into designing, but needs money and a big break. She wants to get on the popular reality TV show All Dressed in White, thinking this is what will allow her to reach her dream. She was not expecting it would happen the way it did. We met Robbie in the first book, teammate and BFF of Jake. It seems that Robbie's family owns and operates the Scottish Highlands’ premier wedding venue and he knows brides, gowns, wedding cake and more. When he spies a bride in Hyacinth’s shop wearing a completely wrong dress for her figure, he can't help but interfere. Hyacinth gets completely flustered as Robbie, wearing a kilt and t-shirt, saves the sale and gets filmed along the way. When the video is posted on youtube, it goes viral and Hyacinth is sure it will destroy her business, but it does the opposite. Meanwhile, with forced proximity, Hyacinth and Robbie begin to develop feelings toward each other. Will Hyacinth get all she has been longing for in business and love?
Who doesn't love a kilt wearing, smooth talking Scottish rogue, especially one who plays hockey (not a common occurrence in real life), and is a perfect gentleman in most cases. I loved watching the relationship between Robbie and Hyacinth grow. There was a lot of humor (at least for the reader) and great banter. Robbie and Hyacinth are complete opposites. Robbie has an over-the-top personality with a fly by the seat of his pants attitude, while Hyacinth is list and schedule-obsessed. This was definitely an enemies to lover story with forced proximity as well as opposites attract. Once again there was turmoil and angst, and I loved seeing Hyacinth finally realize Robbie was all she needed and wanted. I enjoyed seeing the three friends support one another as the story unfolded. The hockey lifestyle was more part of this story than the first and I found it realistic and relatable. There are some intimate scenes but only a couple and they were not explicit. I recommend this one to those who enjoy a sports romance.
📚 Hello Book Friends! This is such a lovely book filled with conflicts, tension, attraction, and love. I absolutely love the characters of Hyacinth and Robbie. The chemistry between them is palatable and you cannot stop yourself from cheering for them. The book gets bonus points for Robbie, the sexy gallant Scottish hockey player… I have this thing for Scottish men. This is the second book in the Good Southern Women Series. The book can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend you also read Sweet As Pie. It is also a fantastic sexy romance. I am looking forward to reading the third book.
A Huge thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for my advanced listeners copy of Smooth as Silk.
Going into this book I knew it was part of a series. I listened to an excerpt of the audio on NetGalley and really enjoyed the narration and within the first five minutes of listening was made aware that the love interest was Scottish. Sold. It didn't really take much to hook me.
Even though Smooth as Silk is book 2 in a series I feel as though you can still read it as a stand alone. It reads more like a companion novel with some character cross over.
What I Enjoyed-
*The Narrator- This book is narrated by Courtney Patterson. I think she did a fantastic job. She has quite a few books under her belt so if you are a lover of audio books you may recognize her voice.
*The Setting- I love a sweet southern romance.
*The Plot- I loved that Hyacinth owned a bridal boutique and I love reality TV. The plot of this book definitely intrigued me.
Why This Book Lost Stars-
I wanted more from the romance. Hyacinth was so annoying at times. I really wanted her and Robbie to have some great banter. They did not. I didn't even have a single moment of swoon. I could also tell that the authors of this book was a bit older. Just by the phrases used. No disrespect what so ever to them. The main character kept saying Mother of Pearl whenever she was flustered. Like over and over again throughout the book.
Overall- Not bad. I won't be recommending this book to everyone but I'm not saying I won't give this author duo another try.
Exuding Southern charm, Courtney Patterson’s vibrant narration brought Smooth as Silk by Alicia Hunter Pace vividly to life, drawing me into the audiobook from her first words spoken. Patterson’s voice is a perfect fit for Pace’s characters—especially Robbie and Hyacinth with her affinity for accents. Her narration for Robbie, from the Highlands of Scotland, is marvelous. The dialect and cadence in Patterson’s narration for Robbie is so good I kept forgetting she’s the sole narrator and that there isn’t a male counterpart for Robbie’s and Hyacinth’s dual, first-person POVs. She narrates Robbie’s Scottish brogue, accent, and personality so easily. Robbie’s culture shock, awe and love for the South—the novel is set in a small town in Alabama—and utter bafflement with Hyacinth and cluelessness when faced with her ire all come through so clearly in Patterson’s narration. Most of all, his feelings for Hyacinth soften his voice despite his inability to figure her out.
Patterson’s narration for Hyacinth is emotionally intense and powerful, capturing her high-strung, prickly, driven, uptight personality and the tough façade that protects her fragile heart. When she goes into a hysteric worry spiral, Patterson’s voice is frantic with a flurry of emotion—frustration, fear, panic, desperation to succeed. Hyacinth’s tendency to look at Robbie with scorn, judging his clothes, behavior, and choices, comparing them to her parents comes through in Patterson’s snooty/condescending tone when voicing Hyacinth’s thoughts and words. Not to mention how tight her voice becomes when she feels things not in her control.
Although the chapters don’t indicate shifts between Robbie’s and Hyacinth’s viewpoints, it’s easy to tell who’s speaking based on Patterson’s narration because of the distinct voices she creates for each character. Listening to the audiobook is a better experience for me than reading would have been because I wouldn’t have been able to get Robbie’s accent right in my head. He wouldn’t have sounded anywhere near half as good as Patterson makes him sound. Her southern accents also added color and charm to the story for Pace’s fascinating small-town characters. Patterson’s narration is a great match for Pace’s humor, angst, small-town and Southern charm, and hate-to-love romance. She made the novel a fast-paced, entertaining listen that flew by.
Paces’ description is colorful, and she wonderfully develops her interesting characters through emotional, hilarious, and emotionally intense interactions that make you care about her characters and their lives. Robbie is a straightforward, funny, down-to-earth guy, who doesn’t understand why his mere presence and everything he does irritates Hyacinth, but at the same time, he likes getting her worked up—he likes her. His tendency to rush in and act without thinking makes Hyacinth crazy because she’s a list-making, contingency-forming planner who needs to be in control at all times. They are total opposites—the unlikeliest of a pairing. Yet, the mutual attraction drawing them together is strong. Robbie’s chaos shakes things up and brings excitement into her staid existence, but also love and someone who cares and looks out for her. She gives him someone to love and care for and brings much-needed order into his life. They balance each other’s worst tendencies with love and respect.
Smooth as Silk is an emotional, sweet, and hilarious, one-sided hate-to-love small-town romance with bits of hockey and wedding dress design/fashion. It’s a thoroughly entertaining audiobook I highly recommend to readers who like small-town, Southern, opposites attract, hate-to-love, or enemies-to-lovers romances.

Smooth As Silk by Alicia Hunter Pace has a very unique meet cute that is made even more adorable by leading man Robbie's Scottish accent (though Jamie Fraser's is still #1). Hyacinth's bridal shop needs a boost and as she is dealing with a hard to please bride Robbie sees through the shop window that the dress is all wrong. His family owns the premiere wedding venue in Scotland and though he plays pro hockey he knows what works on a bride. Rushing in to give advice he spills his coffee over the one of a kind bridal gown!
Someone films the event on their phone and it goes viral. A reality show wants to film in Hyacinth's shop. There is only one hitch - Robbie has to be part of the deal! Robbie has very specific conditions to helping Hyacinth make her store popular and Hyacinth has no love for Robbie.
I really enjoyed how narrator Courtney Patterson has Robbie get to Hyacinth just by calling her "Lass" with a smooth Scottish accent. This romcom enemies to lovers hits all the feels we want from our fun romances.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Dreamscape Media via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
What a cute story! Hyacinth lives in a small town and runs a bridal shop. While she loves the store she aspires to make it more. Her dream is to design and create dresses for her brides. A pro hockey team is also situated in the town and with that comes brash and unfiltered defenceman Robbie. Unbeknownst to Hyacinth is that Robbie’s family owns a bridal shop in Scotland. He proceeds to unexpectedly take over a bridal fitting she is having and she is livid. The one positive is that this brings an important business proposition her way. The downside is they want Robbie to participate too. Hyacinth is an uptight and focus driven person and she doesn’t appreciate the outgoing personality of Robbie. Of course being a romance sparks fly. Robbie’s character is adorable and is very well rounded as the book progresses. We also learn a lot more about what makes Hyacinth tick. This is the second book in the series but can also be read as a standalone. If you are in the mood for a romance story check this one out!
So I really wanted to love this book. Robbie was great.... love me a Scotsman. He was fun and charming and definitely swoon worthy. Can I just say that he was a saint to put up with Hyacinth. She ruined this book for me. She was an extremely dislikeable character. . She was stuck up, self centered, and whiney. No chemistry leaped off the pages for me between these two. The plot line was cute and fun but this couple just didn't do it for me.
Small town romance with quirky characters. Many humorous moments. All in all, I enjoyed Smooth as Silk. Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion.
This is cute and sweet. And apparently the second book in a series didn’t know that walking in. 🤣 sometimes I need to read more carefully on NetGalley. Good though, a lot of fun. As always thank you to NetGalleyShelf sending me this review copy all opinions are my own as always.
Smooth as Silk is fine. It's perfectly fine. I read it in two sitting and it was easy to follow and a quick mostly enjoyable read but unfortunately it was nothing special for me.
There is some very witty dialogue in this and some lines (particularly in the Robbie chapters) that made me snort, which is always fun but then at the same time, there is some very clunky, awkward dialogue that just doesn't fit the vibe at all. I also felt that the two MCs, just didn't click? Like, there were moments of chemistry but it didn't feel sustained to me and there is just so much unnecessary back and forth and the main 'drama' just felt so so contrived and stretched out. It just seemed to go in circles too much in places and I didn't love Hyacinth. Also Robbies 'Scottish-ness' just feels way too overplayed and cringe.
It's pretty well written though and has some very interesting scenes and the vibe is light and fluffy which is always appreciated so this was an okay read for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
It was a generic story. However, I find that Hyacinth's dislike for Robbie came out of nowhere. There is no backstory that leads up to her dislike of him. Although, I really like her name. It's very different. Robbie's character is the same for all of rom-com, he's very likable and humorous; which makes the reader love him. His humor breaks down the wall of the leading lady. As I stated, it's very generic.
Courtney Patterson narrating is good. She tried hard to do an Scottish accent and came close. However, I thought it would have been better for two people to read this story. It would make the distinction of each character better to listen to.
Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I wanted to love this book; it's a Southern Belle meets kilt wearing Scottish Hockey star romance. The writing, the pacing, and the setting were all good, and individually, the characters were great, but I think this was a case of an author creating two characters and working so hard to fit them together... sadly, they just never fit, and worse, they were pretty awful to each other in the way they jumped to conclusions, assumed the worst of each other, and said some really hurtful and unnecessary things. I think had the big breakup come at the halfway point and they worked to a resolution at the end, learning to trust and respect each other it might have been good but it all wrapped up very tidy at the 90ish% point and I just cringed imagining the not so happily ever after
I love a small town, enemies to lovers romance! Hyacinth owns a bridal shop, and she’s trying to get on a reality TV show. Selling a dress to one of the NHL players in town might help her. Unfortunately, one of the players, Robbie, knows a lot about dresses due to his family!s bridal shop in Scotland.
Now the producers want to film at her shop as long as Robbie is there. Hyacinth is angry but has no choice. Can the two become friends……or more “
The quirky characters make this a fun read, 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.
This was the first time that I've read a book by Alicia Hunter Pace and I found it to be such a delight. Smooth as Silk is the second in the "Good Southern Women" series. I felt like it did read fine as a standalone. Having said that, the main couple from the first book are prominent side characters and I can't wait to go back and read their story.
Hyacinth owns a small bridal shop. Her long term goal is to become a bridal designer herself. She keeps trying to get featured on a bridal reality tv show to help boost her business. Hyacinth comes off as high strung (yet loveable.) I could totally relate to her need to be in charge and her list making. Robbie is a charming Scottish hockey player who just so happens to have experience in the wedding business. After a video of the two of them in the bridal shop goes viral, they must work together in order for Hyacinth's long term career goals to come true.
I loved the chemistry between the two. I couldn't help but find myself smiling throughout the book. Robbie was such a genuine character. He always took the time to make sure Hyacinth was comfortable in every situation. Seeing Hyacinth open up with Robbie was so endearing. The two "conflicts" that took place toward the end of the book seemed unnecessary but I understand why the author included them. I am really hoping that the third friend, Ava Grace gets her own story. A huge thank you to NetGalley, Alicia Hunter Pace, and Harlequin Carina Press for this ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
4.5 Stars Tropes include: small town, sports, forced proximity, grumpy/sunshine (heroine is the grumpy)
Hyacinth Dawson runs her life in complete control, including her business, Trousseau, the local bridal shop in Laurel Springs, AL. Her real dream is to design wedding gowns but she needs more finances for that. One day when Hyacinth is dealing with a demanding bride who is wanting a dress style that is completely wrong for her, who comes walking into her shop, but none other than, Robbie McTavish. Robbie is an infuriating, happy-go-lucky, defenseman for the the Yellowhammer's, the local NHL hockey team. Robbie knows a thing or two about weddings because his family back in Scotland owns and runs a premiere wedding venue. While Robbie is able to steer the bride in another direction, he ends up causing some damage of his own which causes Hyacinth to lose control. Too bad all of this is captured by one of the bridesmaids and goes viral.
All Hyacinth has wanted was to have her store selected to be on the reality TV show All Dressed in White. Now that her chances are shot, Hyacinth is in for a big surprise when the show actually wants to film at her shop, but only if Robbie is there helping. It seems a big pop star saw the video and wants to find her dress at Trousseau's. Robbie jumps at the chance to help because he has been crushing on Hyacinth for a while....but he also makes her agree to a few things for his benefit too! The more time these two start spending together, the more their chemistry starts to ignite. When it comes time to tape the show, everything is going well until Robbie opens his mouth forcing Hyacinth into a situation she would prefer not to be in and that's when all hell breaks loose. It will take a huge, grand gesture for these two to find their happy ever after but they eventually do.
I really enjoyed this sweet, wedding themed story of opposites attract. Hyacinth was very rigid in her ways because of things from her past. Robbie was very laid back and just flew by the seat of his pants in most things in his life. Together they made a nice balance for the other. If you are looking for a fun, sweet read....give this one a try.
I did not like the first book, Sweet as Pie, at all. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was part (probably most) of the problem. There were also a lot of "thoughts" that were thought by the main characters in the middle of dialogue that made it hard to follow the conversation for a minute.
So, I was nervous to read Smooth as Silk. If it had been the same narrator, I would have DNFed it. But, thankfully, it was not. (This audiobook is narrated by Courtney Patterson, who does a good job.) So I decided to give it a shot.
I was pleasantly surprised. It was so much better than than Sweet as Pie. Robbie is very sweet and he was a fun character to read. Hyacinth was not exactly super likeable, but her story made sense and she had growth. Maybe I got used to it, but I also felt like this book was less about the hockey team. That was a bonus.
Overall, a sweet romance. Nothing to blow you away, but I got lost in it for a few hours.
I received an audio copy in exchange for an honest review. (I borrowed Sweet as Pie from my library via Hoopla since this book is part of a series.)
Smooth as Silk Good Southern Women, Book 2 by Alicia Hunter 🎧Audiobook narrated by Courtney Patterson
⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5
Hyacinth Dawson likes order and knows exactly what steps to take to get to her next goal in her life plan. The current next step is getting her bridal boutique showcased on the popular reality TV show All Dressed in White…
Hockey player, Robbie McTavish goes with the flow, whether its from lady to lady or party to party… but that’s dried up at the moment now that his partner in hijinks has gone and gotten married…
Looking for some diversion he decides to lead his his wedding expertise to the very unwilling Hyacinth.
With Robbie’s charm and appeal, All Dressed in White is finally interested in her shop, but what is she going to do with the bumbling Scotsman that just doesn’t know when to stop helping!?!?
I absolutely adored Robbie and wished Hyacinth would have looked deeper into him earlier on- could have saved them both a lot of hurt! This was a sweet romance with lots of forced proximity and chemistry!
🎧I was fortunate to receive an audiobook arc and was transfixed by narrator, Christy Woods use of accents and her variation between characters, even the side characters were provided with unique and appropriate voices. This excellent voice work really transplanted me into the story and had me very invested in the outcome. This was a pleasurable book to listen to and the audio definitely enhanced the storytelling.
Smooth as Silk by Alicia Hunter was released February 10th, 2022.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Harlequin Publicity Team and the audiobook from Dreamscape Media through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Hyacinth Dawson is happy with her structured life and is working hard to reach her goals. She is certain that getting her bridal shop featured on an episode of popular reality show All Dressed In White will give her the boost she needs to take her career to the next level. However, she knows she will need a celebrity client to make the show happen. Robbie McTavish may play professional hockey for the local team, but he grew up in a family who owns and works one of the premier wedding venues in Scotland. When he sees a bride through the window of Hyacinth’s shop, he can’t resist rushing in to help because the silhouette of the dress she is trying on is all wrong for her body type. The last thing Hyacinth wants is his help, especially when he gets ice cream on one of her $8000 dresses. One of the bridesmaids videos the encounter with Robbie, and the video goes viral. Hyacinth is mortified until All Dressed in White calls to say that they want to feature her shop on their show – as long as Robbie will be in the episode, too.
Not one, but two of Hyacinth’s best friends told her, “He must really like you if he had to blackmail you into going out with him." Yeah, that is a gigantic red flag for a relationship, not a sign that you should be with the guy. I did not feel the connection between them, and if they were a real-life couple, it’s hard to imagine them staying together long term. Courtney Patterson did a good job with the audiobook narration. This is the second book in a series but can easily be read as a standalone.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.
This has been on what I’m calling my NetGalley backlist for quite some time now. It released Feb 22, 2022 so I’ve had it at least that long. I generally read (or listen in most cases) to my NetGalley books immediately, but I have about 8 on my backlist right now! This is review 1:
This book features Hyacinth, a bridal shop owner trying to get her shop featured on a hit bridal TV show. In order to do this, she needs to land a celebrity client. The TV producers happen to see a viral video of the interference of Robbie McTavish and agree to feature Hyacinth’s shop providing Robbie is included in the package. There’s one big problem. Hyacinth cannot stand Robbie and his meddling, even if he does know what he’s doing.
I wasn’t expecting a sports romance going into this. Those are not my thing at all. It’s also a clean romance - which also isn’t my thing. So considering that - here is my review:
I found myself surprisingly drawn into this story. There’s something about the forced proximity trope that always gets me. While there are adult parts to this book, it’s all fade to black type stuff so you know what they’re doing without the details. I especially enjoyed the epilogue with the story wrap up. It was perfect. The narration was also perfect and I have no complaints about that at all.
I’d recommend this to anyone that enjoys sports romances, wedding planning or the forced proximity trope (while remembering it clean)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Shoutout to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the audio ARC of this one!
This is the second of the Good Southern Women series but could easily be read as a standalone novel.
Hyacinth Dawson is a meticulous person who not only has her dream job of dealing with wedding dresses, but she can also sew her own patterns. The monkey wrench is a lovable hockey player, Robbie McTavish who is more like a flexuous kind of guy who has the best intentions but sometimes has disastrous results. When their world collides, it's not smooth as silk but more like “smooth as burlap.” Remember, your burlap comes from silk.
It is brilliantly narrated by Courtney Patterson. Both the author, Alice Hunter Pace, and the narrator, Courtney Patterson bring to life all the characters and had me smiling and feeling the warmth of the southern hospitality. I love how Hyacinth and Robbie’s journey to not only getting to know each other but learning to accept each other’s strengths and weaknesses. I especially love how Robbie was so caring towards all people and made each and everyone feel cared about. His warmth counters Hyacinth’s mannerisms and eventually, they both understand not only each other but themselves better.
It is a light read and I found Hyacinth’s language when she is angry or surprised or anywhere in between when it came to Robbie, as rated PG. A heartwarming Hallmark rom-com vibe that keeps you wanting more which made it a fast audiobook. I just couldn’t stop and found an excuse to stay up longer, listening to it, at night. I look forward to more of the Good Southern Women series.
Thank you to @NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the digital audio to review. The story is a 3 but the narrator really made it much more enjoyable.

Everyone says that opposites attract, but do they really? Hyacinth is driven. She has her life mapped out and don’t even think about getting in her way for she will eviscerate you with just one look, verbal barb. She doesn’t suffer fools and if you’re not in agreement with her way, you’re a fool. She will stop at nothing to get what she wants, even hurting the feelings of those who want to help and she doesn’t give a moments thought. It is the only way she learned to survive after her upbringing and yet isn’t an excuse, reason or even remotely acceptable. No one matters except her. She runs her bridal shop with military precision even if not always to her benefit. We meet Robbie, her total opposite. He is a free spirited, go with the flow, happy go lucky famous professional player who for some crazy reason wants to get to know her better. Much better! He’s definitely a bit of a wild card, but his intentions though at times overzealous, are all well intentioned. She thwarts him until she realizes that to reach her dream she needs him. Then the games begin. She starts out quite unlikable it takes a while for her to lighten up and join the human race. Lots of back and forth and humor along the way to the eventual HEA. And Im not giving anything away. Its a romance for goodness sakes! Of course there’s a happy ending and this one is adorable!
I received a copy of this audiobook from Netgalley.com in exchange for a fair and honest review.
What a delight! Hyacinth Dawson is a list-maker, the better to avoid forgetting anything that would make the clients of her bridal shop upset. She has big plans for herself and her business. If only she can secure a spot on a reality TV show. And even better of her best friend gets engaged to her pro hockey boyfriend and decides on a dress at Hyacinth's shop.
Oops! Her friend elopes and there goes her chance. Or does it? When she's in the midst of helping another bride pick THE dress, all is going not badly but horrendously--that is, until Robbie McTavish pops in. His brogue tantalizes everyone when he insists on finding the right dress, even if it was the opposite of what the bride had originally said she wanted, but after one of the bridesmaids videos the exchange and posts it, Hyacinth is certain her life is ruined. Wrong again! The video goes viral and the reality show director calls and INSISTS that they want her for the dress selection of an Oscar-winning actress, but only if Robbie is there, too.
What follows is not only a gradual warming of Hyacinth and Robbie, but a set of misunderstandings that culminate in what Hyacinth is certain is another disaster until she sees the edited version. But what she says to Robbie sends him away and their respective heartbreak only gets worse until they meet again at a special after-season party of the hockey team. Can Hyacinth fix things? Will Robbie believe her this time? I'll never tell...
Hyacinth has big plans. She owns a bridal shop in her small town. But, she wants to expand into wedding dress design. So, she must get on the show Dressed in White. She needs a famous celebrity to help worm her way onto the show. When Robbie McTavish, NHL player, walks into her shop with an ice cream cone and ruins a dress, she is livid. She doesn’t make the best impression, but then again, neither does Robbie. So, needless to say, the budding romance does not get off to the best of starts.
Being the southern girl I am…I am shocked that I have missed this team of authors. They nailed the southern culture and charm. When they talked about the egg bowl and McCarty pottery, I knew they were the real deal!
This is a charming romance with all the twists and turns. The fights, the joys and the funny quips are not to be missed! Add in these wonderful characters and the lovely southern town and you have a novel everyone will want to enjoy! NAILED IT!
The narrator, Courtney Patterson, did a wonderful job. Now, I was a bit worried at the beginning. Robbie is Scottish. But, she handled his accent like a pro, in my opinion. I have not heard too many Scottish accents in my day, but Courtney seems to have mastered it!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
I’m always a fan of the opposites attract trope, and I loved how well crafted it was in SMOOTH AS SILK by Alicia Hunter Pace. Hyacinth Dawson and Robbie McTavish are complete opposites. Still, you can’t help and root for them to reach their happily ever after through all the hijinks, laughs, rules, and miscommunication that happens.
I liked this book because Hyacinth’s character is a lot like me. She is very into making lists, everything has its place, is detailed-orientated, and gets hyper-focused on a task to complete it. Robbie comes in and blows her organized life out of the water because he wears mismatched socks with kilts and doesn’t know what is going on from one hour to the next. This does lead to miscommunication, but it also leads to banter that is done well.
I half-read and half-listened to this book. Courtney Patterson did an exceptional job narrating it. Her southern charm for Hyacinth was sweet, and her Scottish brogue for Robbie was fantastic. Imagine listening to a hockey-playing Jamie from OUTLANDER… 😍
This cute, closed-door sports romance unexpectedly made me laugh so much. It warmed my heart, and I can’t wait to read some more from this GOOD SOUTHERN WOMEN series!
Thanks Harlequin Books and Harlequin Publicity Team for the gifted book!
