A new year and a new issue of Savage Realms. This issue features stories by first timer Tim Gerstmar, with the return of Willard Black, and Morgan Kane.

The Glass Crypt by Tim Gerstmar

Rosnick is an aging mercenary with an uncertain future. A lucrative opportunity is presented that will set him up nicely for a long time to come. Why were there no guards? Greed is not the only hungry thing lurking tonight. This story would have been well at home in Offutt's Swords Against Darkness series.

Dark Tales of Ashur-Sukkal: The Forbidden Basin by Willard Black

Redgar and Natali return. Thirsty, the duo discovers a spring. Although, Natali senses something amiss about the spring. Sure enough the duo finds themselves in trouble once again. How will they escape the Fiend in the Dark? The ending of this story had a great 'hell yeah!' moment. Fun stuff.

Adventures in Exile by Morgan Kane

A city with an enemy army on the horizon, and a disgraced concubine cast into the wilderness to die. Are they connected? Who is the mysterious Hawk that is summoned at the close of the story? The first of a proposed series of stories which leaves the reader with more questions than answers.

Remember that Savage Realms keeps the door open for submissions and that fans sometimes make the best authors. Who better than someone who loves the medium? I cannot wait to read your story within these pages.

Entertaining

Still holds an indomitable Redgar and W.Black, and a nasty foe both human and not, though this story's abrupt climax and close was a surprise. "The Glass Crypt" was a sound idea that could use some solid rewriting. And I love Kane's interview and her heroine holds promise, but this was overwritten and the cliffhanger "to be continued" not desirable.

Savage Realms Monthly returns with the January 2022 issue. The 9th release continues the great effort of William Miller and the rest of the SRM crew. This small - 84 pages - publication has been a nice little venue to find new stories and new authors (some, not so new), providing readers a one-stop-shop for sword & sorcery, sword & planet, mythic fantasy, and other fantastical genres that have seen a waning of material over the past 25 years.

The quality of the stories themselves range from fair to fantastic with one of MY favorites being the ongoing serialized adventures of REDGAR - a Barbarian and Mercenary, hired to protect and deliver NATALI - a one-time Rhajii Priestess to safety from pursuing hunters and assassins. Their stories have taken them across arid deserts, into lost and haunted cities, small villages that offer nothing but horror, as well as other journeys that take them through many of the standard S&S tropes. Author Williard Black has continued to maintain the fun and excitement through the continuing story.

In this issue, SRM presents three adventures that will keep the readers entertained. The magazine itself varies in length from 70 to almost 100 pages, but the shortness of the magazine lends itself to readers being able to sit and absorb the entire book in a single reading. The format typically contains an introductory leading into the stories which are all typically followed by a short 3 to 4 page interview with the authors of the piece.

With the Magazine seemingly on a stable footing, I'm looking forward to more stories and flights of fantasy and fancy coming in the future.

This issued included the following:

1 ) THE FORBIDDEN BASIN - by Willard Black. Another entry in the ongoing REDGAR and NATALI saga. After traveling several days, the two find their travels through an arid wilderness thankfully interrupted by discovering a hidden watering hole. As is their fate, their good fortune is quickly followed by its obverse sister and the two have to fight prevent Natali facing a future worse than death.

2 ) THE GLASS CRYPT - by Tim Gerstmar. The death of a King and Queen provide an opportunity for theft and a quick profit. Rosnick's chance meeting thrusts him into a partnership that soon places the wander on the edge of a death and a horror unthought of.

3 ) EXILES - by Morgan Kane. A jealous word casts a one-time courtesan naked and unarmed, into a ravaged wilderness where her fate may be one of a terrible lingering death...or a future undreamed of that may change the course of an entire kingdom. First in a continuing adventure.

More Short Stories

This one contains three short stories with Redgar and Natali returning in the first story, continuing their adventures.

The second story consists of a group, mercenary turned thief, a woman, and a man she wants to pay off to get her freedom returned. They try to steal from the king and queen in a glass crypt, but encounter the undead.

The third story follows a woman from the harem of the sultan, she has been exiled to a very inhospitable land and some questionable characters.

This month was definitely filled with sword and sorcery and is recommended for those that enjoy their barbarians, wenches, and strange creatures.

Another good set of tales.

Three tales, and you know you will get your money's worth with Redgar and Natali, the first part of a Morgan Kane tale and a cool, nasty heist story safe just icing on the cake. Check it out.

Another set of stories, shorter in this one with only 3 tales. This isn't their best collection, particularly as the first one stops after a brief beginning and is never picked up again as far as I can tell. They are entertaining enough but other issues were much stronger.

Nice to see Redgar back in action. A reader can count on those stories being solid. Second story is also good and the third is promising, though it is to be continued in the next issue.
