High Table Hijinks #4

Oni Umeshu Mojito

Rate this book
The world is saved and threatened again. No secrets are safe. One vacation muddled with mint, please.

Marcus Bola and the Wild Hunt saved Egypt from itself and stopped a threat that no one had seen coming, just in time to be thrust into a deity-ordered lockdown. So, when the chance came to go on vacation? They were in their cosplay and letting loose in the Land of the Rising Sun before anyone could change their mind.

Old friends pop in to say hello, just as all hell breaks loose. Someone’s shedding light on things they shouldn't, and the clock is ticking. An organization from the shadows threatens the country—the world itself—and that's not even the worst part.

Myths and legends have become a target; their tales may be erased.

Awesome series !

Need more of these worlds . I am always interested in finding out more details on the main group of characters. This definitely gives me that . I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

That was by far the worst book of the series. Marcus character got da*n near ruined, with all the out of character behavior, questionable decisions and constant self manipulation.
All the stat gains didn’t really seem to do anything. Marcus is only strong towards the end of a book and gets thrown around all other times. There is not enough consistency in his power or the team. Hell, it felt like he was stronger in the last one for some moments.

Once again Connell is the magic word for Marcus to throw his brain in the nearest dumpster and act like 15 year old with anger issues. At this point Im half hoping the kid dies, cause frankly its annoying. Threatening the man that could kill you and everyone you care for because your son gets indirectly inconvenienced is so extremely stupid that its hard to describe, especially when that man is still protecting him from greater harm.

Honestly Marcus deserved to get his teeth kicked in for how stupid he was. Constantly making demands from Zeke, benefitting from his goodwill and then indirectly provoking and antagonizing him. He could have gained so much more from an alliance. Get rid of fae royalty, release his ex from her sacrifices, strengthen his own team and influence before the Vornal show up and get rid of the egoistic and arrogant gods, that would most likely be a problem for him too at some point. But no. The character whose life has been turned upside down multiple times in the span of a year is suddenly starting to get small minded. Maybe make Marcus less into a calculating a**hole , if he is so bad at calculating. Hell, he worried about Cassias mom, a woman that disdains and wants to kill him, while fighting her and nearly got his friend killed by doing so, but considered killing the man that only helped him.
Marcus trying to explain to Zeke how he is wrong for trying to get to his kids and wife get back at his captors was so hypocritical and out of character, that I considered dropping the novel right then and there.
Either he should have considered Zeke friend, enemy or just ignored him. But you don’t constantly ask for help and support, then try to find ways to harm or kill the one that helped you and still think you have the moral high ground.

Cassia was not much better. Constant worry about her family and friends, as well as berating Marcus to not provoke anyone and not using her own power led to one mistake after another. The fact that she did something to her child to gain power and Marcus allowed it, is disturbing. The god literally said „sacrifice“ and „belongs to me“. I can’t believe Marcus allowed it.

All in all, the plot of the book was not bad, but the way the characters acted and thought was terrible. Even worse is the author constantly forcing the plot so their behavior doesn’t have any serious consequences.

Book four

Mistakes: Well written and edited as far as I can tell. I didn't find any errors in this book.

Plot: A vacation to Japan turns into a working holiday as the Wild Hunt rides to save the world yet again.

Characters: Lots of growth for the MC, some of them cosmetic. I like the fact that you know the MC is having sex with his girlfriend, but that we readers don't get all the badly written details. The details normally take away from the story since very few authors are capable of not making it sound like a juvenile wet dream.

9/10 A very good read.

I like the series as a whole, but I have a feeling that they are becoming less about Marcus and the crew and more about zeke. How many times, since book 2, have we seen Marcus acting meek so zeke woudn't kill they? The guy is doing a shitstorm and all we got is "yeah, too fucking powerful, let's ingnore everything".
4 books and the Hunt are more like side characters to "Axe druid: epilogue" than anything

KU Review

Another solid entry to the series. I love the meta of inserting yourself into the story as an alter ego of a character from a completely different story. Look forward to seeing how these two worlds collide.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

The Hunt rides!

Another brilliant addition to the High Table series. Marcus and company are a riot and learn a little more about themselves and the world. I can't wait for the next one.

If you haven't read the axe druid really people just go do it, the whole series is out there, you'll also know who Zeke and co are and these references will make more sense. Cannot wait until the next installment is available. Big thanks Mr Johns .

Action in Japan.

Now the action moves to Japan and some classic creatures of that mythology. Marcus and his gang grow more powerful and the story builds to a massive battle that tests all their abilities.

Hopefully the next book has people rolling the eyes less.

Great story

Marcus and his crew go on vacation and it is everything except relaxing. The High Table crew continue to get stronger because their enemies are monstrous. This was a fun read.

Initial feeling is a 3 but realistically 3.5 as I think my relisten of the previous books gave me a bit of overpower burnout😅

Going to be light on the review and just post some thoughts.

Zeke's is getting a bit nuts
The initial Japan trip was hilarity and seeing how Marcus's Vorna nature behaves is reminding me of the Void race from The dungeon slayer books (only briefly listened to those so I could be wrong)

Note: this book suffers a bit from midpoint syndrome in which it's not quite episodic but also getting heavy on long term exposition so it does feel a bit rougher.

Overall still a good romp and we got more info on where Zeke is from, the huntsman, and galaxy 's past

If you liked the rest of High table this will be enjoyable.

That reminds me. Most of the council can sit and spin

Marcus, Arden, and Cassia are off to Japan. This should be an amazing trip for the anime loving ladies! Japan has a very rich history of mythological beings. What could possibly go wrong? Marcus just wants a vacation.

This has been a awesome awesome series to develop new characters. More importantly, this book does a lot of set up work for the next story arc. Without getting spoilery, an antagonist of the story is really complicated. You feel for the character, but certainly not their methods. I’m very interested to see where this goes!
