Belong to Me #2

Definitely Deacon

Rate this book
Jesse Ainsley’s life running his busy veterinary practice in the sleepy Cornwall bay he grew up in leaves no time for a serious relationship… at least, that’s what he tells himself, but the simple truth is much more cliché. He’s been in love with his best friend forever, but when he starts pulling away and goes radio silent on him for six months, Jesse begins to wonder if their friendship is finally over.

Deacon James lives his life at two speeds, a hundred miles an hour and stop. He’s spent the last decade travelling the world, winning races, partying with the most beautiful men and women, and living life on his terms, a life which was pretty close to perfect… with just one caveat… he’s never quite been able to get over the boy he left behind. His best friend Jesse has always made him yearn for something he’s too afraid to face and cutting him out of his life seemed like the only answer.

But things are never that simple. When Deacon wakes from an accident in Italy with Jesse asleep in the hospital chair beside him, he discovers Jesse’s been keeping secrets of his own.

At a crossroads in their life, they’re faced with a choice, build something deeper and stronger from the ashes, or let words unsaid and secrets tear them apart forever.

~2.5~

I didn't like this book as much as I liked book 1, mostly because I didn't love Deacon or his friends, and didn't feel like Deacon ever fully understood Jesse. I hated that he strung Jesse along for years and then ghosted him.

The first book was tender and sweet; this one was less romantic and far less steamy.

The author also introduced far too many secondary characters. We have Colin the bumbling baker (whom we already met in book 1); Deacon's hot Daddy uncle; Deacon's besties, including a famous rockstar and an artist; and Nat's sister who's mysteriously staying at Beck's brother's house without telling Nat that she's in town.

The last one really irks me: Where is the author going with that storyline? Why is she inserting a M/F pairing in the middle of a M/M series and spreading the plot out over several books? I don't care about Sophia or her drama.

I still adore the town and will read book 3.

I was actually considering giving this full 5 stars even though the issues I had with it that I'll elaborate below and that's a HUGE concession from me! I mean if the story has sucked me in like Jesse's did but then there's something that completely pulls me out of it, the story automatically, FOR ME (I can't stress the FOR ME enough here), loses half a star.

But here Vawn Cassidy delivers such an emotional read that I kept feeling it to my gut! Every hurt and pain of Jesse's was a punch to the heart! Up till the halfway through the last chapter (not the epilogue, the chapter before that) despite the niggles I had throughout reading I was determined to give this 5 stars but then something happened in the last chapter and 4 stars it is. What that thing was? !!

All that above in the spoiler combined with the fact that a lot of Deacon’s story, feelings and emotions revolve around Cody’s death, that is pretty much the 3rd MC, in all of the talks/musings about his death and Deacon’s grief there’s NEVER any parallel drawn or even a sympathetic thought spared about Jesse’s dad dying! From either MC. It’s like it didn’t happen! The only times it is mentioned is when Jesse explodes close to the end of the story and when he and Deacon go to Sully’s for lunch and Deacon thinks how he wanted to be there for Jesse but he couldn’t because he had a race and there were a lot of people depending on him, a lot of training had went into it! Can I rage here please??!! Like throw my kindle out the balcony rage?! How SELF-CENTERED can a person be?! Jesse was there for him when Cody died, even though he almost lost his own brother but when Jesse’s father died and Jesse really needed Deacon there, oh well he couldn’t because there was a race and people depended on him?! So yeah those things ended up frustrating me so much that a star was removed.

Now to my other issues/niggles which are more an editing/proofreading thing.

Definitely Deacon released on the 29th, ARCs went out on the 26th, meaning even if I wanted to I couldn’t start it before the 27th because of time differences. Anyway. Sending the ARCs so close to release date means that the book is locked and loaded. Everything checked and ready to go. Right?

Well in this case it is WRONG!!! From missing full stops and capital letters to left open dialogue markings to the many, Many, MANY typos with my favorite being “errection”!!! Seriously this needed serious proofreading and it had nothing to do with the author using and going back and forth American and British slang and colloquialisms. Although I say that while reading the ARC version. Maybe the version that was uploaded to amazon was spotless *shrugs*.

The other thing was Deacon's friends! We have Jin, Kyan and Damien. BUT there’s also a Nick that appears and disappears throughout the story. He wasn’t there in the beginning, he appeared midway through and then around the 70% disappeared again… So is there a Nick?

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

P.S.: Oh and I just remember how the whole Reed & Pia thing just disappeared all together after.

I am loving these Cornish boys!

Well the Epilogue to this book is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time and just perfectly capped off another brilliant entry in this Cornish set series.

I loved Beck and Nat in book one and I loved Beck's twin brother Jesse and Deacon in this one.

Honestly, it's rare for me to find two books in a series hitting all my perfect notes but so far we're two for two in this one!

There's also not much I enjoy more than a best friend's to lovers romance, especially when it's combined with pining and suppressed feelings on both sides where there's been valid reasons for them not to have talked about it.

There's loads of great hurt/comfort in the narrative too and, as I said with the first book, I so very much appreciate the lack of the 75% dramady moment.

Vawn pushes the conflict point to the max as we hit the stumbling block at almost 90% in.
Sounds dreadful, works brilliantly in practice because you know it's the only hiccup in what's going to be a glorious happy ending.

Great cameos again from the rest of the gang and an interesting introduction to four new guys who are getting their own spin off series.

Loved it.

3.5 stars. Deacon left Cornwall a decade before for a competitive sailing career, traveling the world and partying with rock stars and famous artists, but after a car accident in Italy, he comes home and reconnects with his estranged best friend Jesse. Small town veterinarian Jesse has been in love with Deacon since they were kids, but gave up on his hopes for a future with Deacon years ago, until suddenly Deacon is back in town and needs a place to stay while he recovers from his injuries.

I enjoyed this funny and emotional second chance, childhood best friends to lovers romance. I love the coastal Cornwall setting and all the side characters in the Bay and the romance was very sweet, but there was one thing I just had a hard time believing. Deacon is supposed to be famous for competitive sailing, so famous that he has paparazzi taking pictures of him. Can anyone name even ONE famous competitive sailor? Do paparazzi really follow sailing champions around? Maybe sailors are more famous in Europe? I just couldn’t really wrap my head around him being that famous. Other than that, I thought the book was fun with some really emotional and romantic parts and the ending is wild! Definitely will continue the series.

A Second chance/ friends to lovers romance that I just loved. It was great being back in the bay and I really enjoyed meeting all the new characters introduced. My heart went out to Jesse in this one. He spent his life worrying about everyone else and making sure they were taken care of, while inside he was a mess. It broke my heart hearing about how he'd been feeling, but I was also happy when he finally broke down and his hidden pain came to light. It was about time his family focused on him for a change.

Deacon had his own pain he was fighting through, but spent most of the past years oblivious to it. I can understand why he needed to get away after losing his brother, but what I had a hard time forgiving was how he treated Jesse in the start. Thankfully he made it right in the end and I felt that it helped them both to heal a bit.

The epilogue was absolutely HILARIOUS and I think was my favorite part of this book. I even read it twice because I just loved it so much. I'm immensely hopeful that some of the new people we were introduced to are getting their own book, I'm looking at you Jin! That doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to Ryan's or Colin's book. Originally I thought the author was going to pair those two together, but it seems I was wrong and there is another man in store for our little baker who's sweet as the candy he makes ;)

What a wonderful fabulously written story, with a best bunch of secondary characters. I mean you have side characters and you have side characters, like here, who are just as important as the main.
The main Jesse and Deacon are best friends, to something more, to something less, to vague friends, to almost nothing. Until Jesse gets a phone call from Italy about Deacon being badly hurt in an accident.

What looks from the outside like a perfect life, Deacon has a hollow space inside that can’t be filled, well, maybe by one thing.
Jesse was hurt deeply when Deacon left and lived his life to the fullest, without him. After that, no one could fill the gap he left behind.

After many many years, Deacon turns back to the place he flew from. Jesse takes him in until he’s back on his feet again and will leave. Jesse is convinced it’s just a matter of time.
There was always a strong connection, Jesse don’t want to risk his heart again but can’t resist the pull.

There are friends and family, from both sides, who are just amazing. All beautifully created and layered, colorfully different, and all supportive af towards Jesse and Deacon.
I was just stunned by this story and all the people involved.
Jesse and Deacon are lovable, warm, and both scarred by the hurt they’ve been through.
The storytelling was absolutely breathtaking, with a beautiful flow, everything felt right.
This is my first read from this author and certainly will not be my last!!

This series is becoming a really enjoyable one.

Characters are absorbing and memorable. And not just the MC's - the side characters are just as engaging and well-conceived.

While it took some time for me to warm up to Deacon, Jesse captured my heart immediately. Jesse is nurturing, patient and sweet. And it didn't surprise me that he had answers to questions that Deacon hadn't even thought to ask. Once you learn of why Deacon seems a little lost, you can't help but warm up to him too.

The few new characters that were introduced seem fairly interesting. There are going to be stories for all of them, either in this series or a spin-off and if they're going to be MM, then I'll definitely be there for that.

One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Deacon's uncle, Garrett meets Colin. If you read the book, you'll know exactly why I say, it's the most adorable thing I've ever read... 😄💕
I know they are getting a book so I'm really looking forward to that.

All in all, this was a really enjoyable read... 💙💙

RTC but I really enjoyed this one. I really enjoy the entire atmosphere of this series and this book was the same for me. I loved the tropes in this one, and I had a lot of fun reading it.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is a wonderfully complicated second chance friends-to-lovers romance. Charming, playful and just a tiny bit heart wrenching, Jesse and Deacon are wonderful.

Actually, at the start of the book, Deacon is a spoiled and self-centred sports star. It’s Jesse, the patient village veterinarian who is wonderful from the start. Where Deacon is brooding and resentful, Jesse is sunshine and light - even when I wanted him to save himself and walk away.

I really enjoyed the way the author works back and forth through the important moments in the men’s 26 year friendship. It is the young Deacon's memories and experiences that make the adult Deacon feel redeemable. From childhood, Jesse’s feelings for his friend are almost painful to witness. Deacon’s childhood experiences are equally terrible.

Somehow, the author keeps the connection between Deacon and Jesse light, playful and mostly fun. After a rocky reunion, the friendship between them burns brightly. Jesse’s family and the quirky Bay residents are familiar from the first book and I love them even more in this second story.

I love the English seaside setting and characters. The Bay is truly the main character in this series. This book introduces a more glamorous second set of characters connected to Deacon and I’m really curious to see where the author takes them. This is definitely one of my favourite series at the moment and I can’t wait for the next one.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Definitely Deacon is the second book in Vawn Cassidy’s fabulous Belong to Me series. I went absolutely crazy for the first book, Suddenly Beck, so I have been eagerly awaiting this next installment. The first book features Jesse’s brother, Beck, and there are some connecting side characters. I think you could jump in here no problem, but the first book is so good, it would be a shame to miss it.

This story is a friends to lovers journey with a dose of a second chance romance. Deacon and Jesse were inseparable best friends growing up, with one summer where their attraction boiled over into romance. However, when Deacon’s older brother died, it crushed him, and Deacon broke things off with Jesse, moving out of town as soon as he was old enough. The men continued to be best friends, but lately Deacon has pulled away. As readers, we know that it is because of his feelings for Jesse, but to Jesse it seems like Deacon has just lost interest in their friendship and moved on.

This is the second book in the series, and I would definitely recommend that you read them in order. This could be read as a standalone, although I think you would miss some of the finer points of the plot.

Jesse is the identical twin of Beck, who featured in book one. The funny thing is that Beck is this gorgeous, larger than life artist who falls for Nate the new chef in the family restaurant, yet his twin considers himself to be an uninteresting veterinarian. Perhaps partly due to his lifelong love for Deacon having been crushed by his continued absence from his life. It is so perfectly written though, that it is only much later in the book, that this discrepancy between actual and perceived really becomes obvious.

Deacon has been travelling the world, competing in sailing competitions and avoiding his hometown, in part because he can't face seeing Jesse and the feelings he has for him. Avoidance has come at a price, but it seems fitting that he should suffer.

Fate clearly has to intervene, and whilst a bad car crash seems a cruel route, it definitely starts these two men on a journey to revisit their lifelong friendship, their one summer of intimacy, and review what the future could hold if the stars align.

I love the little touches which make this an exceptional book – like the origami to reduce panic, the discussion Deacon has with Garrett about the wood that should be used on the latest boat being built, and the black silky hair of paper artist Jin. I am also looking forward to the mystery of the car crash being looked into further in the future... a definite unfinished thread there!

Beautiful story, wonderfully written, thank you.

Definitely Deacon (Belong To Me) Book 2

Deacon James has grown up in The Bay, Cornwall, all his life he has been surrounded by his friends, the Ainsley Boys, Reed, Jesse, Quinn and Beck.
His mother walked out when he was 5, leaving him and his older brother, Cody with their father.

His father couldn’t handle it and he upped and left too. It was left to their Uncle Garrett, their fathers brother, to come from Montana and take care of the boys. Garrett was only in his early 20’s when he gladly took on this role, he raced them and loved them.

Deacon has always been Jesse Ainsley best friend, they did everything together, but when his brother Cody is killed in a car crash he has to get away and he leaves The Bay and all his friends behind. He travels the world as a Boat Racer and becomes a star in the sport.

Jess has always had a childhood crush on Deacon and as they get older Jesse’s feelings just bit stronger. Jesse has hidden these feelings from his family and friends and he has also hidden another secret from them.

Deacon has visited very occasionally for short stays to see his Uncle Garrett and Jesse but now Jesse hasn’t heard from him for more than 6 months and he doesn’t return Jesse’s calls. He feels like just letting go of his feelings for Deacon once and for all.

At New Year Eve, Jesse is at his lowest ebb when he receives a phone call from Italy. He is listed as “next of Kin” to a Mr Deacon James who has been admitted to a hospital in Rome following a car crash.

Traumatised, Jesse, with the help of his twin brother Beck who speaks Italian, they jump on a plane to Rome.

******************************

Vawn Casssidy has done a terrific job with this whole series. Given the number of prominent characters in each book, she has really brought each one of them to life on the page, with their individual personalities.
Plus the storylines have also been interesting for each one.

I’ll be very sad if I don’t get to read the stories of the rest of the Bay Boys. Keep them coming Vawn.

5 Stars!!!

Definitely Deacon is book 2 in the Belong to Me series. I think you can read it as a standalone, but I really liked Suddenly Beck, so for maximum enjoyment, I suggest reading them in order. We met Jesse (Beck's twin brother) and got a glimpse of Deacon (Jesse's best friend) in the first book of the series, but there was so much more to them than just that.

Jesse is battling anxiety and depression, and successfully hiding it from his family and friends. He's been in love with his best friend, Deacon (Deak), since before he knew what it meant. They had a summer fling, but when Deak's brother dies, Deacon decides to leave the Bay and become a boat racer, and they go back to being friends. Time and distance put a dent in their friendship, though, but when Deacon suffers an accident, Jesse and Beck run to his side and bring him back with them to help him recover.

I absolutely loved Jesse. He was such an amazing, caring man and I just wanted to hug him and make it all better and make him see how great and how deserving of Deacon's love he was. I really liked Deacon, but I wanted to slap some sense into him a handful of times. They had amazing chemistry and I loved them together, they were just so perfect together.

This was one of my favorite second-chance, slow burn romances. It was an emotional rollercoaster that had me happily sighing one moment and crying the next. If I have to complain about anything, was wanting to know more about Deacon and Damian's accident since Ms. Cassidy teased us with it not being quite an accident. I really hope we get to see more of it in future books.

Overall, a definite recommendation from me. This is a book you don't want to miss out on!

Vawn Cassidy paints a technicolour world in her Belong to Me series, with vivid characters and a magnificent setting in the UK. The newest edition, Definitely Deacon, brings even more varied personalities who I just adore!

Deacon has been avoiding his childhood best friend and former lover for more than a year. He knows it is only hurting them both to stay in touch when he’s always on the move and can’t be sure when he’ll visit their hometown again.

Jesse has only ever loved one person and he doesn’t know why Deacon won’t return messages or phone calls anymore. But when he gets a call that Deacon is in the hospital in Italy after an accident, and has listed Jesse as his emergency contact, he doesn’t hesitate to fly to his side.

Both Jesse and Deacon go through some tumultuous inner development through the course of this story and I felt every sigh and tear. The anxiety disorder, which Jesse tries to hide from everyone, resonated strongly with me and I felt deeply for his plight. Each page kept me riveted to this story… and the epilogue is truly epic!

I recommend reading both books in the Belong to Me series, as there are some plot points that are covered in Suddenly Beck (book one) which I feel are required in order to fully understand the emotions brought to light by the magnificent writing of Vawn Cassidy in Definitely Deacon. Both stories are completely engaging and hard to put down!

4.5 stars. Lovely, lovely story of unrequited feelings for best friend. So sweet and sexy. A bit angsty with lots of pining, not too much, just the perfect amount before everyone comes to their senses and we get our big declarations. That’s what I love about this trope, they typically have such wonderful declarations and big gestures. Love that. This really is unrequited done super well, just enough pining without getting stale, the story moves along so well. Such a nice read, cute couple, cute town, some lovely cameos.

We get a bit of back story on this couple in the first book, and I’d recommend reading book 1 before moving to this second installment. Could you read this as a standalone? Sure, any book technically can be read alone. But I wouldn’t want to, there are lots of side characters that pop in through the book and I would have felt unsatisfied if I didn’t know their stories too.

Shout out to Molly who appears again. Contemporary, UK, m/m, book 2, series, HEA, second chance-ish, unrequited, seaside town, veterinarian, boat racing, t/b roles.

Vawn Cassidy is an incredible writer who has the ability to transport you, to make you feel every emotion, and make you fall in love right along with both the characters.

Definitely Deacon is a heartfelt look at two best friends for whom turmoil and life gets in the way of them having a chance together until tragedy forces them back together and they need to re-examine their lives and the choices they’ve made. Deacon and Jesse are both incredible and complex and have a beautiful bond.

Throw in some favourite characters from the previous book and The Bay, then add some raucous friends of Deacon’s and you’ll be completely enthralled.

If you’re a fan of reading a book with perpetually damp eyes, then this is a book for you. Vawn Cassidy is definitely an auto-read for me.

Definitely Deacon is the second book in the series, and Vawn Cassidy has done it again because I loved it as much as the first.
Jesse and Deacon are adorable, and so good together. But first, we’re taken on an emotional journey of self-discovery and secrets revealed before they get their HEA, and once I started reading, I just couldn’t put it down.
We also get to see a little more of Beck and Nat and meet Deacon’s fantastic friends. I admit that I was left with questions and worrying about one of them, so I really hope we hear more about them in the future.
This sweet, second chance, story was filled with emotion, heat, humour and a little angst and had a spectacular epilogue that had me laughing out loud. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I received a copy of this book from GRR to review and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.

Gah unresolved plot lines frustrate me!!

Major spoilers **

This book has 2, one which is ok - the continuation of a storyline set up in book 1 about Nat’s sister which leads to Jesse and Deacon having to lie to their friends and families for their brother and Nat’s sister. It’s one scene and then never mentioned again which feels weird but is forgettable and I assume will be mentioned again in book 3. The major one is part of the main plot - Damien’s car accident and being framed for drug use. There is a lead up to this plotline from Deacons first scene, multiple scenes about it and the last one is Jin calling to say the security footage has been tampered with and asking for Deacons medical records and he suspects both of their drinks had been spiked the night of the car accident. But then that’s it…no further mention?? Unless I missed a chapter or fell asleep at some point and forgot this being resolved? The book kind of dragged for me so I was hanging for this to add some oomph to it as the pining and lack of communication between the guys was getting a bit tiresome. It also didn’t feel like this was a plot that’s meant to go through the whole series, it felt like it meant to be for this book and these characters so it’s seems really bizarre it was just dropped. There was also a ‘best friend’ called Nick who was there and then disappeared?? Overall there was some nice parts and I like most of secondary characters but this one missed the mark for me. Hoping book 3 is better when it comes out.

Hilarious and introspective

This book has the funniest moments while telling the introspective story of two friends who seem to spend most of their life trying to fall out of love with each other until it's almost to late.
A page turner

Perfectly in time for that Summer holiday, Definitely Deacon by Vawn Cassidy brings us back to the Cornish beach, and all the characters we grew to love in Suddenly Beck. A second chance/friends to lovers with some new fun characters? Yes please. Highly recommended!

The best thing about Vawn Cassidy’s Definitely Deacon, the second book in her ‘Belong to Me Series’ is the wonderful array of characters she has created. And, of course, the book’s appeal is certainly enhanced by the stunning cover design from Natasha Snow.

Beginning with the protagonists, now estranged best friends and one time high school summer lovers who grew up in the same Cornwall bay town, veterinarian Jesse Ainsley and international sailing racer, Deacon (Deak) James, the reader is immediately taken by the caring nature of nearly all of Cassidy’s characters - even those dealing with serious mental and physical health issues.

Right up there on the liability scale with Jesse and Deak are Jesse’s twin brother, Beck Ainsley, a sculptor who is developing an international following of his own, and Beck’s fiancé, Ned, a ‘half-Italian’ chef who helped save the Ainsley family restaurant; Reed and Quinn Ainsley, brothers of Jesse and Beck’s; Ryan, a local craft beer brewer and great friend to the Becks; Colin, another good friend who began as a pastry chef and now owns a bakery/candy shop in the town; Deak’s Uncle Garrett, a master ship-builder, who raised Deak and Deak’s brother, Cody, as a surrogate father from the time the two boys were abandoned by their parents as a very young age; and Deak’s ‘collection’ of friends, all wealthy international celebrities in their respective fields: Kyan Amos, ‘the bad boy of rock’; Zhang Jim Li, a renowned paper sculptor; Damien Taylor-Moore, a Formula-One race car driver; and Nick, an Oscar winning actor.

In the first chapter of Definitely Deacon, Jesse notes that, “There’s nothing more soul crippling than long term unrequited love…” and it’s clear from that point on where the story is headed. Jesse and Deak both desperately want to be together, but neither seems to be able to make it happen. And, as the author notes in the blurb for her novel, “But things are never that simple. When Deacon wakes from an accident in Italy with Jesse asleep in the hospital chair beside him, he discovers Jesse’s been keeping secrets of his own.”

Definitely Deacon’s premise is certainly appealing, but for me the doubt, angst, and miscommunication between two otherwise intelligent, thoughtful, and caring adult males was just a bit too hard to accept. Fortunately, Peanut, an adorable tiny American Pitbull puppy Jesse adopted from a shelter where he volunteered, joined the group and helped to make everything whole again.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

Okay, I seriously needed this book in my life. Before Definitely Deacon, I picked up, and quickly put down no less than three other books. Not that they weren't good, or that I won't go back to them, but at that moment in time, they were not what I was needing. Now, full disclosure, I didn't read Suddenly Beck, (although it is still in my tbr pile, and it got moved up quickly after this book), but I read Vawn Cassidy's Dead Serious and FLOVED it. If you haven't read it, go right now, grab it...I'll wait...hurry up...it's just fantastic. So, I snatched this one right up and wasn't disappointed.I don't generally use the phrase "all the feels", but this one really did give me all the feels. Childhood friends turned into first loves until grief was too much for Deak and he had to leave. And he really couldn't come back until he found what it was he was looking for, which as it turned out was there all along. See? All the feels. Deak really had it rough. He held it together a long time, despite having some heavy sh!t happen to him along the way. He still managed to keep a sweet, loyal and funny personality. Impressive considering, but a testament to all the people who helped him along the way, as well as his inner strength.Jesse, so very different from his twin brother, but you can definitely see how connected they were. Beck didn't even hesitate to drop everything and take Jesse to Rome when he needed to be there for Deak. Jesse was sarcastic, made me laugh many times, but also didn't have the best opinion of himself, which seemed to be very much wrapped around how Deak kept distancing himself further and further from him, causing so much additional strain on Jesse. Even something as impressive as becoming a veterinarian he described as "playing with puppies all day". He was the rock that Deak needed, but didn't know it, until almost too late. Definitely some hurt along the way, and it isn't easy to move past that kind of pain and secrets..I've realized between the two books that I've read from this author, that a strength of hers is side characters. They don't just appear, do what they are supposed to do, then disappear. They are funny, quirky, memorable characters. Maybe they'll get a book, maybe they won't, but you don't finish the book and think "now which of the side characters did X". That's a talent to be cultivated and enjoyed. Whether it was Deak's friends, Jin, Kyan, Damien or his silver fox Uncle Garrett, they all had their own personalities and quirks. There's definitely more to explore in the bay, so I hope to see where this goes.4.5 pieces of eye candy

a fantastic story about great characters, I’m a fan

Rating: 4.75🌈

I will admit I’m loving this series so much that I’ve grabbed up all the available novels and read them right through. So I know that the heartwarming feeling of found family and all inclusive community that the Bay represents just increases as each couple finds happiness and works through the trauma that comes with each homecoming and wonderful relationships.

Yes, I’m definitely a fan.

Definitely Deacon begins the migration home of for many of the important characters that are a part of the Ainsley family story. Deacon’s impact here is enormous, both in his main character role and as a avenue to bring the series a influx of fascinating people/friends. Friends who themselves will then a become just as important in expanding the series foundation in terms of found family and types of topics covered.

Grief and loss is always central to this series. Whether it’s the loss of patriarch Sully to cancer (one thread of the first book) or here the loss of Cody, Deacon’s brother and close friend of the Ainsley’s, in a car crash, it’s the impact of that loss, on all the those left behind that’s a factor here. And on the one that ran away.

Cassidy does a great job in developing the characters of Jesse Ainsley, twin to Beck, vet, with a long standing love for Deacon James, boat racer, party boy, the one who left the Bay after Cody’s death. And what little friendship they had seems done. Jesse is a person who is easy to relate to, with some issues he’s working hard to address.

Deacon is a character the author introduces under extreme circumstances. Then lets us get to know him as he recovers back in the bay, where the past and his present combine to finally get him , along with Jesse, and all the rest of the group there, to move him forward.

This is painful, funny, emotional stuff. Also sexy and romantic. That ending was satisfying and hilarious. There’s a follow up short story called Dear Las Vegas, Thanks for the memories. It’s available either for free when you sign up for the author’s newsletter or if you buy the paperback. Either way, a must giggle fest.

Now to await, along with the author’s many other books/series, the book four. And more, hopefully.

These are all a definite recommendation.

Belong To Me:
- [x] Suddenly Beck #1
- [x] Definitely Deacon #2
- [x] Dear Las Vegas, Thanks for the memories #2.5 -author mailing list or paperback book
- [x] Forever Finn #3
- [ ] Irrevocably Ryan #4

After years of loving his best friend, Jesse thinks it may be time to let go. After all, Deacon is a celebrity boat racer known worldwide, whose friends include societies elite. What could a veterinarian, happy in Cornwall, have to offer. But fate has other ideas starting with Deacon waking up in hospital after a near-fatal accident.
Definitely Deacon is book two in the Belong To Me, series. Each book features a specific couple whose journey to their HEA is complete by the end. When I read book one, Deacon and Jesse were the men whose story I looked forward to reading because they had a touch of the scene stealers about them – and I certainly was not disappointed.
The story is told in the first person from the viewpoints of Jesse and Deacon. Technically, the only part I had issues with was the eyes being autonomous. It’s not only a pet hate of mine, but many editors frown upon it. E.g., ‘My eyes cataloged’ – the eyes don’t have their own memory or brainpower. Regardless of tense - the eyes are the tool, but the person did the cataloging using eyes, hands, etc. Everyone gets what is being conveyed, but the phrasing is editorially incorrect.
Anyhow, that gripe aside, everything else I loved. Worldbuilding and imagery were superb, and as I am a Brit who reads many American stories, I fully immersed myself in the British colloquialisms and familiar phrases. Oh, and let’s not forget sarcasm – it’s one of my many literary Achilles heels, and it’s in here in spades. I was in literary heaven.
As for the cast, there were plenty of potential scene-stealers. All are a riot with varying agendas—none of them out-shone Jesse and Deacon. But, to give any hints of who was a star and where would do readers the disservice of experiencing something special for themselves as there were plenty of places where I laughed, had palpitations, and cried. Deacon is a good man, but Jesse is someone special.
Definitely Deacon is a well-timed, page-turner of a story. It deals with friendship, blood and chosen family, anxiety, depression, careers, ways of life, high-flyers – I could go on. It also contains plenty of drama, and angst and is thought-provoking. If it weren’t for a few technical issues – this would be a five hearts story. I thoroughly enjoyed every word.

I truly enjoyed book two of the Belong To Me series by Vawn Cassidy. I highly suggest you read the first book in the series to give you background and insight into the integral characters of this book. I am always thrilled when both MCs are personable and likable.

Jesse is Beck’s twin who received his HEA earlier, making Jesse slightly jealous of his sibling. Jesse is a veterinarian and an all-around great guy. He is a natural caretaker but never seems to be able to ask for any help himself. He harbors a secret even from his twin because he feels he needs to handle every problem independently.

His best friend, and all-around major crush, is Deacon. Deacon high-tailed out of the Bay as soon as he was old enough and rarely returned. A family tragedy made him run, and in the process, he ghosted Jesse. He had his reasons, but boy did I want to shake him for his hurtful behaviors.

Jesse has come to terms with his most important friendship being severely one-sided. However, when he gets an urgent phone call from Rome that Deacon was in a serious accident, Jesse doesn’t hesitate to jump on a plane to rush to his side.

Deacon really cares about Jesse, even though his reasons for staying out of contact were wrong. Living a life of luxury by racing boats has suddenly lost its luster, and seeing Jesse again makes him realize how much he has missed out in life.

The two men were in such harmony as a couple, and their caring went beyond the physical. It saddened me to think Jesse felt he wasn’t enough for Deacon. The men’s feelings pulsated on the pages, and I was sad to see the story end. An adorably quirky epilogue brings closure to another great book by Vawn. I simply can’t wait for the next in the series. Happy reading!
