A collection full of action, aliens and more. Impossible to not get caught up with all that happens. A definite binge worthy read. Well done once again.
I really enjoyed this series that reminds me of old time scifi at its best. It was a blast to read and full of aliens, action, lots and lots of battles, ridiculous scenes everywhere, and amazing characters. It was a blast to read and I enjoyed it all. This contains the complete series so makes it easy to flow from each book and enjoy it all easily. Easier to enjoy if you suspend reality and expect anything and everything but for it not to make scientific sense. This series starts with Jackson and Roy, the only survivors of a crash on an alien planet and this duo must survive what they find. The series was a riot as the duo makes friends, find enemies and a few companions. Lots of action, danger, crazy fun scenes, aliens both good and bad, and an enemy or two bent on killing everyone in their path. Fun to read and kept me entertained and reading to the end to see what was going to happen next and what Jackson, Roy and their friends would survive next.
There are so many things wrong with these books that one can only justify them as relating to an alternate universe. Aerial spaceships that can be pulled down by predatory vines. No matter how many times or devastatingly they crash, they can be fixed up within a day of field repair. There are numerous different aliens, but the most interesting are the psychic bugs that look like a cross between a white beetle and a moth. Their shell can survive a bullet. They can fly by rotating their antenna, and they use their antenna to read minds. The aerial space ships can fit all sorts of numbers of people, and dinghies, but they're small enough to flit around like fighter jets. Not only that, but they shoot out bombs that are contained in stacks from blocks that resemble gunner stations on B-17's. The ships are so maneuverable they can turn within the boundaries of a city block, and pull out of a power dive in less than a thousand feet. Most interesting are the gulper ships that go around swallowing ship after ship without indigestion. So Jackson is on convoy duty when he's jumped by some mysterious black ships that shoot him down over a planet with which there are no diplomatic relations. He's only able to save Roy from his crew. He's trying get off planet but the locals are mostly hostile. He teams up with a foreign store owner and his slave. Rescues a couple of revolutionaries, and gets involved with a prophesy. As can be predicted, he rids the universe of the nasty black ships. He fulfills his prophesy although not as expected, and he finally gets back to his home world. Watch out in book 7 where the author forgets how to spell one of his made up words.
Lasers are and will be the absolute worst choice of weapon in the Atmosphere. Even a slight haze degrades them markedly. Smoke dust and chaff would neutralize. In space they could have many advantages. No recoil. Little degredation over distance and naturally speed of light. We have already created masers, particle beams, and other energy based weapons that the only limit is power. When we master controlled fusion we can move forward. Matter anti-matter already are known to exist. Controlling and containing is unlikely in the near future but something to dream of.
Not Buck Rogers, it's Duck Dodgers. This book is most certainly aimed at an eleven or twelve year old. I'm 72. It's not my style. I agonized through 20% of it to make sure it wasn't going to get any better, but no. For adults, forget it. Young readers, great. Actually, I think the scoring system should have two categories, one for the young and one for the mature reader. This would be great for some pie in the sky reader, heck, I might have loved it sixty years ago!
When you first start to read the beginning of the first book, the people and action grab your attention so thoroughly that you can't help but become involved. I became so emotionally involved with the heroes and their allies that I cried at the end of book 9. This is probably not the reaction you would expect from a sci-fi series, but nonetheless, that is what happened. I would wholeheartedly recommend this series to anybody who likes action, adventure, allies, enemies who become allies and good outcomes!
This is a nice little time waster. Towards the end it gets a bit overloaded with repeated near miss incidents. It could have been a couple books shorter I think.
It’s also clear the author doesn’t care at all about things like physical distance or time. Every location is instantly available, characters can cover vast distances on foot, battles have no discernible scale, weapon power and ship performance is all over the place. The internal logic of this story is bonkers.
Had me sitting on the edge of my seat wondering how our human heroes, and their ever widening circle of devoted alien friends could possibly survive yet another impossible and life-threatening situation. I love Danial Young's books! His descriptive talents are nothing short of amazing, allowing us to see each character, every scene clearly, and the action never stops. Nine books later, I so want to know more! Sigh, read the books; you will not be disappointed. Great read for all ages.
Stubbornness I guess. The grammar and spelling was mostly good. The action sequences were trying to be like the old Buck Rogers or Doc Smith pulp sci fi. But what jarred with me was the thinly veiled racial stereotyping of the various groups and peoples. And the stereotypical behaviors got worse as it went on. Oh, well, it’s finished now.
As an original trekkie and a sci-fi nut, I believe this would make an excellent offering to the many fans of space operas we have enjoyed over the past. This series has many of the same style quirks, plot lines (read: twists) and heroic attributes as the greats had and I would definitely enjoy seeing this on both the big screen and small. Great mind candy. I enjoyed getting lost in it. Thank you!
Daniel Young has written a story that is nothing but a masterful, everything is in it, intrigue, near misses, dark characters, folks who can't decide if they are good or bad. Battles that are nothing but painfully lost! And then a stroke of luck kicks in saving the moment. "Blackout" never gets slow or boring . EXCELLENT WORK with a great cast.
Non-stop action. It starts with a bang and the action never lets up
The story starts when a captain and a petty officer survive a crash landing on a hostile planet with no way home and just keeps going from there. Different species interact with the two castaways. Together, they defeat an invincible overlord and resolve a civil war
This was such a great read. I loved this book from beginning to end. Great character development, good storyline, and excellent meaning in the story. I love that the characters repeatedly put themselves at risk to do what is right and to help others. Fantastic story and a great end. Loved it!
As an avid reader I found the story line was full on but there was giant gaps in any explanation in time of space travel and so many other anomalies it could almost have been written by a ten year old. I looked back over my primary school writing and it was little different from this style. Saying that the overall story with the captain was ok.
This series developed the characters in it very well. You could almost hear the screams and yells during the battles!! Or hear the laser blasts hit the concrete!! The story was a good one. And it certainly kept you turning the pages to find out what happens next!! Good read!!
This starts out as great si-fi reading, but then gets way too complex with all the warring factions and never-ending near-miss incidents. The writer must have pasted all the action, wars, people, on some huge wallboard to keep track of everything. While I love reading about aliens and space operas, this ended up being way too 'just-in-time' for me.
This series develops the friendship of a vast array of aliens. Through the nine books, a motley crew of aliens find true friendship, which shows that working together for a cause brings out the best in us all.
Stranded on a strange world when his vessel crashed, Jackson found himself in a war zone. Daniel Young has created a great cast of characters and storyline with this series. A Sci-fi must read!
Reading them all one after another was very enjoyable.
Didn't like some of the careless mistakes in word choices. Found the rest of it entertaining. Some characters to admire, some who were simply detestable. Plenty of action to move the plot along.
This was a really intense, really long epic adventure with plenty of twists and turns, highs and lows. The ending was well done with its own little surprise thrown in.
Perhaps it was aimed at the pre-teen readers, which is fine. I was a avid reader when I was young. But these books (I couldn't make past the 2nd one) are boring and bland.
Decent writing style, but for a much younger crowd maybe.
Enjoyed the story. It read like the science fiction of old. Was nice to have the complete series. I sometimes got lost with all the alien factions showing up, but overall quite entertaining.
Took a while to get into this saga, but once I did it was quite enjoyable. It got better as it continued, although there was an excess of death & violence. The story seemed to go on & on & could have been shorter.
Its a bit all over the place. Not really sure what's going on. They tend to cut to the chase and stay there. It's a reasonable read but I think I can find something a little more coherent so I'll leave this one for now.
I haven't been able to put this book down. This series had everything you want, plenty of action and a few laughs .I will look forward to reading more of his work.
I enjoy a great story and this was one of the best! Awesome characters I came to love. Action packed to the max with surprising twists. Can’t recommend enough!
