Difference Trilogy #2

The Difference Between Somehow and Someway

Rate this book
The world gave me everything.

After surviving a plane crash, I was lucky to be alive. It was a harsh truth, but one that changed my perspective on how fragile life could be.

So when a fellow survivor caught my eye, I owed it to myself to take a chance and follow my heart.

Bowen Michaels was guarded and broody, but I saw through his well-formed armor. Much like me, he was broken and lost, but together we found our way through the darkness.

For a brief moment, wrapped in his arms, it felt like maybe he was right about fate and we’d been destined to find each other all along.

But when buried secrets of the past erupt, igniting us both, it was hard to believe we’d been fated for anything other than failure.

The world gave me everything.
And then it took it all away.

Aly Martinez

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

I enjoyed this second installment as well, although I will say (being that I've basically finished book three at the time of writing this) that this book and book three could have been combined, making this a super solid duet instead of three, somewhat weaker installments.

But luckily I got this via Kindle Unlimited, so I ain't mad about it. But...still.

In short, I'm not gonna say much about this book since it was basically filler. Except that ending...highly ridiculous; but hey, it's a smutty romance novel and I was here for the ridiculous. So, it's all good.

The steam was here, the connection and chemistry was here...and that offsets a lot for me in my romance.

Onward.

📚'THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOMEHOW AND SOMEWAY'📚 Is the second full length romance book in 'Aly Martinez's 'Difference' trilogy. It picks up where the previous cliffy book left off.

After being blindsided with the previous books cliffy this one has been in the back of my mind since I closed out of that last page!! And once this landed on my kindle I couldn’t wait to jump back into this world again.

This does jump from past to present frequently allowing us more of an insight into the airline disaster which changed so many lives.

This to date has been such a unique journey, where lies and truths become clouded, headache at the forefront of every character as they strive to protect Remi at all costs.

Nearing the end I could feel something building up in the background preparing myself for another cliffy but WOW nothing quite prepared me for the twist as I fell down yet another one which has left me sitting her flabbergasted and eagerly awaiting the last instalment. This author fast became a favourite of mine with her knack of pulling us into her storytelling and her twists and turns have made her one to watch out for, no one beats her shock factors, her cliffy's are brutal but that just spikes up my anticipation levels like you wouldn't believe.

Go in blind, these also much be read in order..

"We were a man and a woman working off debts to one another's souls."
I think this trilogy is going down as one of my favorite reads of 2022, and February is not even over yet. This didn't hit me as hard as the first one, thankfully, but I feel weird after reading this. It's like I just experienced something and I can't describe it for the life of me.
All I know is I have a book hangover. Again.

Just like Somebody and Someone, this book is very much unique. It takes you for a ride again, but I sort of saw a bit of it coming so it didn't have the same impact. In any case, and because I can't really say a lot about it without spoiling it, I'm making some general remarks again.
Like the first one, I couldn't stop reading.

"Let me save you tonight."
Bowen and Remi pulled me in. Again. I was lost in their story, in who they are, in a narrative that I knew wasn't going to end in this book. And I still couldn't help but feel all of it in my bones, all the emotions oozing off the page.
These two people feel so raw and so real to me it's hard not to talk about them as if they're real-life people. And the way they love is the way you'd want to be loved.
Although I still liked Remi, I was 100% with Bowen on this one. I could feel what he was going through, and it brought tears to my eyes.

"Somehow. Someway. Well, this was my way. I would tear the gates of hell down if need be."
There's so much angst, so much regret, desperation and straight up fear, of loving and losing, in this book. And regardless of how you spin it, it all leads to one thing: love. Love is at the root of all of it, the kind of love where nothing and no one else matters. The kind of love that makes you risk it all.

Somehow and Someway ends in yet another cliffhanger, and I can't wait for the final book. All I ask for is the happily ever after these two characters deserve.
Honestly, if anyone deserves it, it's them. Life and the world owes it to them.

Brilliant, Ms. Martinez. Just brilliant.

The first book in this series had such a crazy twist... I never would have guessed the ending of this one would have even a bigger twist/cliffhanger. Gah! I have no idea how Remi and Bowen's story will conclude or what will happen in the third book but I can't wait to find out!

Oh my god, where do I even start. From the moment this hit my kindle I just had to begin reading and could not put it down until I was done. Now, I'm not sure how I will wait until March for the conclusion of this story. Wow, just wow, Aly Martinez never ever seizes to amaze me with her stories. She has got to be the best plotter in the business, hands down. The way she crafts the story and keeps feeding you information little by little while surprising you up until the end is just remarkable. Not much I can say about the book, this is part 2 of a 3 part series and you should absolutely go in blind. This book will BLOW YOUR MIND! I will say this, the book builds on the events of book 1 and answers so many questions that were left unanswered in Book 1. So many, but then you will have a new set of questions to look forward in Book 3, lol. You'll be hooked from the first page and by the end, you'll be wondering what the heck is going on and how can she go from there. Aly Martinez is that one author that always gets me when I think I have the story figured out, every single time. Every time I think I know what's going on or who did what, she throws me off the scent and then hits me out of nowhere! Amazing story, amazing characters, just amazing. I can't wait for the conclusion, it's going to be epic!

"You left me."
"I freed you," I corrected. Gripping her hips, I leaned down, bringing my mouth mere centimeters from hers, swallowing her exhales as if they were the only oxygen I would ever need. Resting an elbow beside her head, I pressed my body against hers. Chest to chest, her breasts pillowed between us. "I have loved you every single minute of every single day since I laid eyes on you. Happy. Sad. Desperate. Lost in love.
You were all of my memories
."

2.0 on the possessiveness…

"Your nerd friends are going to bust when they hear this bit of seduction you have going on."
He blanched. "I’m not telling them."
"And why not?" I winked.
"You think I want them imagining what I’m about to do to you when we run into them at the grocery store? Think again, Remi. This…" His palms slid under my skirt to my hips and tugged my panties down before he stuck them inside his pants pocket. And just like that, he was unfastening his belt, lifting me to my feet, and then folding me over the arm of the chair. "This is all for me."

uhm dirty-talking bedroom bo…i mean, technically speaking, this would actually be the floor of his living room, but still…

With rough hands, he shoved my dress up, losing his patience when it got caught on my breasts.
"Take that shit off."
Oh, hell.
Any other situation and we would be having some pretty serious words about him barking orders. But it was Bowen filling me, stretching me, and owning me completely. So, needless to say, I couldn’t get the damn dress off fast enough.
Slowly withdrawing, he rumbled, "Bra too."

solemn, pining, boy-obsessed, bo…

"I need you to understand. I want to know everything there is to know about you. I want to know about your first kiss. About your childhood celebrity crushes. I want to have firsthand knowledge of all your favorite songs and make sure I dance with you to all of them. It doesn’t stop there. I want to know what makes you happy and sad and makes your skin crawl. There’s not a single aspect of your life that I’m not interested in. And I’m sure as hell sorry if I’ve ever made you feel otherwise."

Then, because you feel awful about leaving them for so long even though they trashed your house, I’ll give them each a little piece of cheese on top."

His smile stretched impossibly wide. "God, I love you."
"Don’t forget the so fucking much part. It’s my favorite."
He dipped low, smiling against my mouth as he mumbled, "So fucking much."

I was praying to the book gods that this book would give me the answers that I was craving and a sense of peace but do you know what I got instead?? High anxiety and more questions!

This is book two in the Difference Trilogy and if you’ve read the first one, then you know that it ended on a wtf cliffhanger. This story picks up where it was left off and we’re seeing the everyday dynamics between Bowen and Remi. These two have been through hell in their past, and are fighting for a future that they know will be worth every heartbreak and setback that they've endured. But when more secrets come to light, the past won't be the only problem that they will have to face.

I’m not sure why I keep underestimating this author when it comes to the shock value that she puts in her work, but I do. I had a feeling that something was about to happen and I kept ignoring it because the theory that I had, there was just no freakin way she would go there. Guess what? she fucking did!!! Even though I saw it coming, there was still this sense of disbelief and shock and you’re wondering “what now”????

we-are-so-fucked-miranda-croft

I know I won't be the only one waiting on pins and needles for the final installment in this twisted love journey. Can Remi and Bowie survive the secrets and betrayals? Only time will tell along with Six bottles of wine and a therapist.

The book is like going into a haunted house knowing you’re going to get scared . You were prepared for something, but certainly not for this. The twist that Aly puts in towards the end is like she took us to hike up the mountain, anticipation of a great view building up the thrill. And then she makes us stand on the edge of the cliff and vanishes!!!
WTF just happened!! Serious whiplash people!!!!

description

“Remi, I’ve seen people being arrested for tax evasion look less scared.”

Yup i was THAT scared...😶
If you like suspense, if you like to read the greatest undying-unbending love story and if you like to get mindfucked at warp speed- Pick up this book!!
Aly structured the book with alternating time frames. You get to see the aftershocks in present time with Remi & Bowen in a blissful love bubble. In the next she zips you back to the time right after the crash.

description

They are hiding their heads in sand. Literally and figuratively. But Payback's a bitch!
Remi's brain has taken over to protect her from trauma and Bowen is tearfully forced to ignore the horrors staring him in the face deliberately.
But the house built on shifting sands is bound to crumble one day and that day comes sooner than expected

"I might have made your life a lie, but I will never as long as I live regret it.”
Her eyes flared wide, and pain crinkled her forehead.
“That’s good to know. Because I’ll regret it every day for the rest of my life.”

These insights are intentionally well placed and do the important job of building up the intrigue to a heightened level.
I swear my pulse went crazy, my heart wanted to jump out of my chest.
Everybody is lying. Some intentions benevolent and one........**gasp**

"The world didn’t owe me anything, but I was beginning to wonder how much I owed it instead. "

description

Whachew did to me Aly!!!🤯
I'm still recovering, having read non Stop yesterday. Mind. Blown!!

Why a trilogy? 75% of the book is a continuation from where we dropped off. Bowen continuing his sham of a relationship with Remi/“Sally” (her old nickname) and them basically having sex, until she discovers a USB in his wardrobe. She then plugs it in and sees all of their memories together… This could have just been put at the end of the first book.

Bowen and Remi are cringey, theatrical and sappy AF. Bowen is not alpha enough for me. There was one scene I gave a strong side eye to here - it was giving me Gen Z… Remi in particularly seems to be lacking in critical thought. How could your fiancée who dealt with three gruesome suicide attempts from you, triggering his own suicide attempt DARE to hide the truth that you lost your memory…

Does Remi even care about Bowen? She was pissing me off. Leaving him to find her covered in blood in bed doesn’t suggest love to me. But maybe I’m being very unempathetic given her kidnapping. However in the present she kept banging on about Bowen abandoning her… bitch, what was he meant to do? You didn’t remember him, and he was with you through every suicide attempt. Were you there for his?

I’ll be honest, I knew who the traitor was. Two male best friends and one of them NOT being in love with her… yeah sure.

Safe.

Finally some explanation. The twist and drama from the first book cleared. The Difference Between Somehow and Someway telling more romance between Bowen and Remi.
There are a lot of lovy dovy in this book.

For someone who knows Miss Martinez well, it is safe bet that she ended it with another cliffy.
The whole story is enjoyable although I found the romance is dragging.

Overall a very good book.

I’ve just anointed Aly Martinez the plotting queen who shows no mercy to her subjects . . . as the saga continues . . . and Lord help me, it was as mindbogglingly devastating as the first round, even more so. So many unexpected bombs were dropped that I’m still reeling from the explosive aftereffects.

I’m not even going to try to review this installment. I simply can’t without giving away clues and spoilers. This is one of the most highly emotional trilogies I’ve read. Each reader should go into it blind, take it all in and hopefully come out on the other side relatively unscathed.

Once again, I’m beating myself up for putting myself in the position of facing another month of torment and anxiety before the final book is released. I should have waited for the complete trilogy and read all three books back-to-back.

Holy Moly! A mind-blowing jaw-dropper that leaves me speechless and feeling anxious for these characters who have been through so many trials and tribulations already. If this is your thang – you won’t find one any better.

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 Fate Stars!

As always happens with Aly Martinez books, It was hook, line and sinker!

Bowen is made of dreams!
Seriously... That guy loves and protect fiercely with his whole body and soul!

Remi... Oh God!
I feel her pain and her struggles... It's not easy to be in her shoes, especially after that end!

I can't have enough of these characters and i don't have praises enough for how amazing and addictive the writing is!

Half star missing for the time that took for everything start to fall into their right places... The beginning.
But even then, i feel like I'm not making sense, cause i love them!

Moving on to the next now!

I can’t begin to tell you how much I need this book right now after reading the first 😭🥴♥️

OMG 😱 AM dropped another huge bomb. Truly I didn’t expect the what and the Who. I know something was off but I never expected the story went in that direction. I don’t know how Remi and Bowen survive this much less come out the other side ever the same. Remi can’t seem to catch a break and I’m so heartbroken for Bowen and their entire families. I’m still reeling from the ending of this book. I have to say AM wrote incredible story … this plot is nothing expected nor been read before. I am ready for the finale and I hope to God it has a HAE for everyone involved. I don’t think my heart can take it otherwise 🙁♥️

READ THIS trilogy!!! Can’t wait for book 3

From the second this puppy landed on my Kindle, it had me in a complete chokehold after the massive cliffy and revelation that we got at the end of book 1.

Still so many questions, though we do get some answered…

I will say, the love that Bowen has for Remi is just stunning. Their chemistry and his dedication to her jumps off the pages.

There’s pretty much nothing I can say about this story that isn’t a spoiler so I’ll just say this, never underestimate the brilliant plotting and scheming talent of this author. Just when I thought I had this somewhat figured out (as evidenced by my million tabs and highlights!), she pulls the rug right out from under you!

I highly recommend this series if you’re a fan of twisty, spicy romance with a side of suspense.

These cannot be read as stand-alones. It is part of a continuing story following one couple, Bowen and Remi.

If you need me, I’ll be over here pre-ordering the case of wine I’ll probably need to get me through the third book!!

Color me addicted to this trilogy! I could kick myself for reading the first two books a full month before the final book is released. I need it now!

While the first book highlights the period leading up to the plane crash, The Difference Between Somehow and Someway gives us some of Bowen’s experiences during the days and months following the tragedy. It’s an angst fest to be sure, but I’m more in love with Remi and Bowen than ever. These two are perfect for each other, and I couldn’t read the story fast enough.

The book ends with a breathtaking cliffhanger. I’m not certain I’ll like the direction the story is heading, but I can’t wait to find out!

REVIEW: 4 heart screeching stars
"Who knew that utter joy and the darkest sorrow could exist in the same moment?"

Sooo, I guess - what? I just sit and wait another month? Twiddle my fingers? Oh dear, this is going to be a long month. A very painful, long month.

Dammit Aly...

To be honest, I don’t know whether I’m sad, mad, or ready to start punching someone!!! What a messed up ending. My heart can only be pulled in so many directions!! OMGosh, seriously....I'm flexing my fingers, crackin' knuckles - because I am more antsy after this cliffhanger than I was after the first one.

Watching Bowen and Remi maneuver through this new reality they find themselves in was both painful and intriguing to watch unfold. Bowen’s determination is beyond compare. His love for her? His deep, undeniable love for her is no match for any truths they don't see coming and I feel like he's going to be the rock she so desperately will need. He’s determined and resolute. He knows what he wants, and he’ll move Heaven and Hell to get there. I simultaneously felt bad and loved him even more with every page I turned. He’s an amazing man. He really, truly is.

I'm sad because the wait is going to be really tough - that's no lie. I'm wholly invested in their story and really want everything to work out. I sit squarely on the lap of Bowen (with a smile?) that FATE is an all knowing miracle and I feel just as he does about it, so this one is such an easy read to follow with my heart and soul.

I'm mad because that twist wasn't my favorite - but it certainly gave me some hindsight into some of the things said and done over these last few books, but it kind of snuck up on me too - and I liked that part a lot. But that ending made it that much more difficult to tell myself to hurry up and wait. Because now I want to punch someone seriously hard. HARD.

Remi is so damn strong, but I cannot honestly put myself in her shoes because what a helluva way to have your world implode. If you've already read book one - you will know the turmoil she's going through in this book, and that's not anything easy to figure out on a good day, let alone a bad day. If you haven't, you might be saving yourself some heartache! HAHAHA! I am seriously sitting here with my head swirling with possibilities and wondering how Bowen is going to handle this all. INVESTED, I TELL YA!!!

While this book ended on the kind of cliffhanger I thought it would, I’m anxious to read the rest of this story. Is it predictable? No! Gosh, no. The amount of story she has looped in between the drama and the actions that are pushing this book forward allows for me to fall deeper in love with Bowen and Remi and their entire predicament. It's a love worth fighting for, but the fight is going to be more tragic than I think we all know.

But I will end with this...I am literally hanging off the proverbial cliff.

"The truth felt like a bullet as it landed squarely in my chest."

The following is my review of book one, word for word, and it couldn't be more fitting right now ...

ATTENTION (seriously, pay attention to this): If you have the opportunity to go in blind to this story, do it. And by blind I mean no reviews, no social media updates, nothing. You can thank me later ;)

I'm not going to talk about this story in any way except to tell you that whatever you think you're reading, think again. Here's the thing about that, it can probably be said about the majority of Aly's books, so I should have known. And I did. Sorta. But not really because BAM, #fuckery! I felt something coming the entire time I read the story but when it came, I just blinked repeatedly and said "Well played Aly". That's what I love the most, thus far, about this story. It is anticipatory and edgy and just plain twisty. It is Aly Martinez at her very best and I am anxiously awaiting the next chapter in Remi and Bowen's journey!

SERIOUSLY, don't read a single thing ...

WAIT, I do want to add one thing ...

Dear Aly,
Doooooooood, WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?!?!
I mean …. Jesus Christ on a cracker … I mean … #fuckery
You’re really fucking good
Well played!

This is where things get good but unfortunately, I can't tell you a lot of it because they are spoilers.

Suffice it to say that Remi learns a lot about herself and Bowen.

The book starts off right after the plane crash. We get chapters of what happened after every now and then and it fills in some answers.

My heart really went out to Bowen in this book. He has sacrificed so much and made to do without so much. He gets to a really bad place.

And the ending is all kinds of crazy. You definitely want to have the next book ready.

I was honestly bored the entire time I was reading it. I felt like a lot could’ve been cut out of this book. I think the author took a bold step making it a trilogy. There isn’t much to add to the story but the end. I wasn't expecting that at all! Still, I don’t think it was enough to make me want to read the last book in this trilogy.

The second book in The Difference trilogy, and wow, Aly Martinez has given us another heart-pounding, dramatic and beautifully romantic read that continues Bowen and Remi’s passionate and heartfelt romance, and pulls us deeper into their captivating story.

This is absolutely not a standalone, and there is very little I can say that won’t give away spoilers from book #1, The Difference Between Somebody and Someone, so I’ll keep my review vague. And do yourself a favour and don’t go looking for spoilers - this story unfolds exactly as it’s meant to, so just sit back and enjoy the tumultuous ride. Martinez has created a wonderful set-up for these two, and after falling in mad love with these characters and their heartwrenching story in the last book, I couldn’t wait to read more.

In the first book, we met Bowen and Remi, and saw them fall in love. Both survivors of a devastating plane crash, they carry emotional and physical scars, but despite that, they fell into an easy, happy, healing relationship that is sweet, playful, full of emotion and wickedly sexy. Now, we get more of their beautiful love story, while at the same time we see more backstory – specifically, the time immediately following the crash and how that has shaped events in the present.

Perfect didn’t exist for me and Remi. We were battered soldiers fighting an endless war. A war I tirelessly waged day after day and night after night.

Wow, my heart was aching at all that these characters have been through, and seeing more of that trauma allows us to more fully understand them and the decisions they have made. I hurt for both of them, and at the same time was so happy that they managed to find each other, and find such blissful happiness together.

Remi Grey had been born to be mine.

But secrets are uncovered that will change everything, and again, my heart hurt watching it all unfold. There are some pretty huge reveals, some that actually had me gasping out loud and rereading sections to take it all in, and then a twist which once again turns the story on its head. We’re left with another brutal cliffhanger, and I have so many question, and am desperate to know how it’s all going to end up.

“Who are you?” I whispered.
… “Same person I’ve always been: yours.”

Thanks God we don’t have to wait too long, and I can’t wait for Bowen and Remi to finally get the happy ending that they so desperately deserve in the third and final book in the trilogy.

Such a great read – 4.5 stars.

“We were battered soldiers fighting an endless war.”

WHOA! What have you done to me, Aly Martinez?!? The Difference Between Somehow and Someday took my heart for a workout as it dominated my mind, body, and soul. This love story of soulmates and sacrifice stuck everywhere, catapulting me deep inside these characters’ heads and hearts, as their world became mine. I felt every word ... everything.

The seductive Difference series continues with The Difference Between Somehow and Someday starring two broken and beautiful souls thrust together by fate but fueled by secrets and sacrifice. This heartfelt tale paints a vivid picture of life after tragedy … the twists .. the triumphs … and the tethered bond of love that is fierce yet fragile. I was in awe of Remi and Bowen’s undeniable pull and scorching chemistry—a connection of kismet—and I felt them and their love story so much.

Martinez has created the best heart-owning hero in Bowen, the one we all want by our side, who loves hard and goes to the ends of the earth to protect his soulmate. Just swoon. I was so swept up in this spellbinding saga of secrets, suspense, and soul-hugging characters. An absolutely precious romance that is completely captivating.

This smartly written and stunning story of strength shines. But that suspense-striking end with a twist that struck me like a baseball bat to the head? I was floored … so much that I was on the emotional edge. I’m not okay, Ali Martinez. I need more of this heart-pounder now.

I’m… I don’t know what I am….

Exhausted. Wonderfully so.

Spent. Like a wet, happy noodle. (Can noodles be happy? I like to think so).

Bewildered. With my brain rattling around, trying to wrap my head around it all.

The most important though, is I am totally happy in my new-found obsession with this series! This author pulls me in every time. Angsty. Tangled, twisted emotions. Surprises – oh the surprises. Shocking. Eye-opening, shocking…

Take all the above, shake it around and you have my response to the latest in this heart-throbbing series. The emotions started in high gear and they have been pummeled non-stop ever since. And you know what? It’s been a great, great ride that’s not over yet!

I’ll warn you, that unbelievable cliffhanger was kindle-throwing worthy because I knew I would have to wait. Argh – the wait… It will be worth it. Soon… Please, let it be soon! ~Diane, 5 stars

Still good tho it did drag a bit at first. I liked how devoted the hero is but the heroine annoyed me just a bit. I also think I would have liked it better if the reader didn't know who the heroine was just yet, and then finding out at the same time as the heroine could have made a bigger impact. Lastly, the twist at the end was one I kind of saw coming only because the person was like the only option to have been the bad guy. Otherwise, I feel like there should have been more breadcrumbs and lead up to it.
