When defeat is inevitable there are only two options: go out on their terms, or yours.

At last, the Roman Empire is winning one of its most savage wars. King Pinnes is dead. The Pannonian tribes have surrendered. Only the Dalmatians under Bato remain in the fight, and this brutal leader holds the life of a former Roman standard bearer in his hands.

Corvus is spared only on condition that he continues to fight against Rome as a rebel, but his enemies are everywhere. Not only do the Romans want his head, but the treacherous Ziva – his supposed ally – is a constant threat.

With the Pannonians knocked out of the war, the entire might of Rome is directed against Bato’s army. Legion after legion covers the landscape. Sieges are laid. Towns burn. Thousands die. There is no mercy.

And there, in the fire of the rebellion’s last stand, Corvus must face his greatest betrayer – Marcus.

The epic conclusion to the Raven and the Eagle series.

This truly astonishing Roman historical adventure is the 2rd volume of the wonderful "Raven and the Eagle" series by the author, Geraint Jones.

At the end of the book you'll notice a superbly documented Author's Note, where the historical details are very well explained by the author.

Storytelling is once more of a splendid quality, all characters come vividly to life in this tale of revenge and bloody warfare, the dialogue between all characters involved is clear and humanlike, while the warlike atmosphere of Dalmatia and Pannonia, for the story's sake they are named separately for in reality it was one Illyricum at this moment of history, comes very much to the forefront in this great tale.

The book starts off in the year AD 8 and it will end in the year AD 9, after the final stand at the Battle of Arduba, and thus also the ending of the rebellion lead by Bato the Desitiate.

The story is fast-paced and action-packed in which Corvus (Raven) is now finding himself as a Rebel in Bato's army and thus fighting his former and erstwhile brothers of Rome.

This rebel army will be a thorn in the side of the Romans, for in this book that will be the case at first at a place called, Raetinum, before in the end setting it on fire, with the intention and succeeding with burning a lot of Romans alive and escaping themselves towards their last stronghold of Arduba.

Over in Arduba the Rebels will hold out against the Romans at first, with Tiberius and Germanicus as their main leaders, before Bato the Desitiate will recognize his loss and surrender, but still the town will be a massacre in bloodshed and looting, while for Corvus there will be a final reckoning with his father's murderers, especially with his oldest but crazy "friend" Marcus, and all these actions in Arduba will lead and end for Corvus with the feeling of being alone everywhere and belonging nowhere.

Highly recommended, for this is another excellent addition to this magnificent series, featuring Corvus (Raven), and that's why I like to call this episode: "A Very Impressive Rebel"!

Captivating read and story

This is a really really good ‘escape’ read and by escape I mean a novel where the writer is able to bring you right into the story and have you feeling the words and actions of characters so well written.
The Covus trilogy follows the actions and thoughts of a man who has a very high moral standard which is no mean feat in a time when rape and pillage was, in essence, a way of life. The main character has been through many trials and tribulations due to his personal ‘feelings’ and views.
In this the third book of the series it seems that he has finally found his place BUT the author has wound in a so,e serious twists and turns and the ending is not really what I, at least, thought was coming.
This is a pretty amazing set of books that are really well written and make for a great read. Read them all - you will be enthralled.

gripping finale of the series

Loved it! Raced through Corvus’s last stand. Plenty of gore, plenty of pathos, plenty of romance, plenty of mateship.

Corvus continues to evolve and suffer along the way.

I’m looking forward to the next book!

Ripping yarn

Really enjoyed this , read the series out of order , of course, so this one made sense of the others. Wondered how Corvus had met Arminius before the forest! Great action, bags of blood and he got the girl, what more could a boy want?
