But what if that home hasn’t been home for far too long?
Award-winning photographer Georgia Quinn lost her family years ago for loving the wrong person. A woman who became her everything without them in her life. After her passing, Georgia’s lost. Now she is back in Minnesota to help her mom through cancer treatments, giving her something to focus on. Because her camera has lost all its appeal.
Staying at her family’s lake house should be relaxing, but her mom isn’t exactly a good patient and her sister is avoiding her. Add to that, her mom demands she hide that she’s gay, something she hasn’t done since leaving them behind. Making getting out of the house a priority, her walks on the beach with her dog a lifeline. Running into the daughter of her mom’s best friend gave her something to look forward to.
Her silly teenage crush is all grown up and still oblivious to how Georgia sees her. Which is fine, because Georgia’s not over her wife. What she needs is a friend, and Olivia Janes is someone she can talk to when her family won’t. In return, Georgia pushes Liv to take her first tentative steps into the dating world after her divorce.
But what happens when Georgia starts to see Liv as more than a friend? Will her family send her away again, this time for good? Is she willing to risk her heart that is just starting to heal?
Simply beautiful and a really wonderful book to read - one which I had to complete within one sitting and into the wee hours. I spent a fair amount of time tearing up while reading Risking Her Heart as my heart breaks for Georgia; when her family shunned her for 20 years for who she loved, as she lost the love of her life, as she tries to find love again with Olivia, as she tries to mend bridges with her mother and sister.
The letters which Marty wrote and left for Georgia, her parents, and Georgia’s next spouse tugged my heart and had me reaching out for some tissues. And the epilogue put a damn smile on my face.
Sweet, endearing, and heartwarming. Loved it !
And I so look forward to reading from the same author again, hopefully, sooner rather than later 😊
Outstanding! One of the best books I have ever read. Wonderful MCs with lots of deep emotions between them. Heartfelt. The story got me crying a lot. It‘s about loss but also about second chances, new beginnings and new happiness. Needs more than 5 ⭐️. Highly recommended!
This was an unexpected gem of a read. I got so caught up with Georgia’s grief & Liv’s love that I didn’t sleep - I just had to keep reading to get to the ending. The writing and storyline, along with all the characters have captured my heart. Really well written, but do keep the tissues close by! Would highly recommend, best book I’ve read in ages. Book of year already.
2.5 stars. Don’t mind me as I seem to be the odd one out. I did a lot of skimming to get to the end. I felt the story was to long. She dragged out the whole name/pronoun game far to long (45%!). I felt the mom got forgiven way to fast. I was disappointed that the romance was all fade-to-black. The MCs were nice enough but I was just kinda bored. Others loved it so take what I say with a grain of salt. 😁
This story was a fantastic read. There are so many people that have been forced to leave their homes because their gay. Not every coming out story has a happy ending. But in this book, life went a full circle and came up with a better ending. This writer has impressed me with her storytelling. Two very big characters Georgia and Olivia are brought to together by Doug, Georgia’s dog. Georgia is back home after a twenty year absence thanks to her family shunning her because she came out at eighteen. She met a professor her first year in college and fell in love. Marty was older and wiser but both knew what they wanted. But her family told her not to come home until she straightened herself out. Marty and Georgia had a great life until Marty died unexpectedly. Now Georgia is being summoned home to help take care of her mother who has cancer. But in her first night at her mothers, Doug has a seizure and the vet turns out to be Olivia. Her sisters best friend when they were young and Georgia was even younger. This story is about a women who is still dealing with grief and depression in a house that doesn’t really know her and guilt for her attraction to Olivia. Liv was caught off guard by Georgia. Her attraction to her was immediate but she is only a newbie lesbian. Recently divorced with three kids, Liv is still not sure of what she is doing but getting closer to Georgia is now her number one thing to do. What a well written story. I loved it. This author has definitely caught my attention. Love the little after reads she supplied. 8
I know it's a romance and there will be cliches as is expected in the genre - it was a little bit too cliche heavy for me, and a little too 'wrapped up in a neat little bow' at the end for me, but I am not a "HEA in every single way possible to the max" person. None of this is a dig at the book. Romance is not my #1 choice in genre, and for people who find romance to be their favorite, none of this will bother them. These things might wind up being what they think is best about the book. All this said, I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is so much more M/M out there in LGBT fiction than F/F, and F/F is what nourishes my soul. These characters had a lot of depth and a lot of tropes were utilized that I enjoy because they make character development more enhanced and I can feel for and root for the characters more. This is a rambling review, but anyway, I highly recommend it.
For a debut novel, wow! One of the best books I have ever read this year and previous years. Outstanding! Did you like this one? Two novellas Finding the One and Still the One
Great story. Very heartwarming and hopeful. I would recommend a bit more steamy parts but enjoyed it nonetheless. I highly recommend this book and this author.
Lindsey Pennington told a wonderful story about a woman risking their hearts after the devastating death of her first wife. It had excellent chemistry and didn't fluff on the healing necessary to move on. Add in the hard time each one's parent had to accept their daughters being hay. It was a great read.
This is a book about learning to love again after a great loss. I really liked how the story developed slowly. And there is a dog named Doug which is just such a perfect dog name! Well worth reading!
Poignant and heartfelt. I recommend for everyone to read this. Well written and the story caught me from the first page till the last. I couldn't put it down and read in one sitting.
An amazingly romantic story that made me cry several times. I couldn’t hold the tears, about tremendous loss but also about new chances and new happiness. This is my first book of this author and definitely will not be the last. Just perfect
3.5 Really good book. A few typos and descriptions like “The blonde”, “The vet”. I generally hate when authors do that. It’s jarring. I only notice that in lesbian romance books, very strange. Anyway, I felt this story was beautiful but a little too choreographed too neat and tidy to the point it felt unrealistic.
Some of the main characters behaviours regarding her loss and conflict felt rushed. This book needed to be a 300 plus book to explore and justify some of the actions chosen by her.
An amazing story about finding love and acceptance while being true to yourself.
When Georgia met a woman who made her happy, it was the last thing her parents expected.
Now, twenty years after her parents rejected her and struggling with the grief of losing her partner of almost two decades, Georgia is home again to care for her sick mother.
An emotional roller coaster that looks at grief and the effects of being rejected by the people who were supposed to love you.
I sobbed my way through this book but could not put it down.
This was the first time I've read something by this author and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and engaging. The storyline grabs your attention and keeps you turning the page. It's a perfect depiction of the healing strength of forgiveness and the power of love.
Love and Loss, Grief and Guilt, and a Dog Named Doug
First of all, I knew I was going to love this book when I met Doug the Dog. From him I could tell that no one in this book was a real villain, the kids (and maybe even the moms) would be cool with everything, and he knew that Georgia and Olivia belonged together. Doug knows all. Lovely story with wonderful characters.
I really enjoyed this book. Liv and Georgia were very likable and relatable women. It felt like you knew them by the end. This book had all the feels from heartbreak to happiness.
Has a book ever moved you, made your heart turn over? This one did, and the biggest throb came in the Afterward! An amazing story, written well, told with sincerity! Moving! Five-Stars!
But definitely in a good way! This journey doesn't just pull at Your heart strings, nope It grabs your heart and it's fist and squeezes a bit! Oh my the journey this is! I can't recommend it enough! Coming out was never so amazing!
This was a really well written book and I appreciated Georgia's journey in finding her identity post-Marty. I was a little put off by the age-gap and professor-student relationship between Georgia and Marty and the way that Marty was put on a pedestal by Georgia.
I swear, I went through a box of tissues while reading this book. The author definitely caught the emotions of losing the love of your life. Yet at the same time, was able to let her find love again.
Very good read. The characters are well written and likable. This book is about loss and finding love again. Finding your family again after being a estranged for twenty year's. This story made me laugh and cry. Thanks for a very sweet story.
This book is amazing! The emotions that Georgia had grieving her loss was absolutely moving. This book will stay in my mind for a long time. Prepare to laugh and cry. A fantastic read!
