Eoin Dempsey was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1977. He grew up in the beautiful Dublin suburb of Dalkey, where he and his friends would jump into the icy waters of the Irish Sea (during summertime) to prove their manliness. Eoin had a fantastic time attending Blackrock College, where he played rugby (poorly) and did his best to coast his way through. Eoin’s first ambition was to play rugby for Ireland. Due to a lack of talent, he soon abandoned that goal for the more reasoned path of the rock star. He played in bands through his teens and well into his twenties before harsh reality came calling, and his dreams of being the next Keith Moon faded.

Eoin made the ill-reasoned decision to study business in university and was accepted into University College Dublin to study Commerce in 1995. While Eoin did attend college, studying wasn’t his priority there.

He met his beautiful wife, Jill, while traveling to the USA in 1997, though it would be several years before he managed to break her down and they got together as a couple. It was during Eoin’s second stint in the USA, which he spent with his brother in New York City, that he decided to start writing a novel, for the express purpose of impressing women. This effort was met with mixed success. Eoin finished his first novel a year later. The over hundred and fifty rejections he received from publishers didn’t discourage him. He pinned them to his wall. After spending a year in Australia, where he was fired from many jobs, including picking red and green peppers and toiling for scallops miles out to sea on a fishing trawler, he returned home and decided to write again. Another novel followed while he phoned it in at a number of jobs in financial services in Dublin.

By this time Eoin had managed to convince Jill, the girl he’d met in the USA years before to move over to Dublin. She did so in 2004. It was the best negotiation he ever undertook. They were married in 2007. Jill’s more brilliant negotiating skills led Eoin to move to her hometown of Philadelphia in 2008, just in time for the economy to collapse. The plan to live with her parents for a few weeks turned into eighteen months, as Eoin struggled to retain employment in a fractured economy. It was during this time that he wrote FINDING REBECCA, which would go on to be his first published novel and be translated into fourteen different languages.

Eoin and Jill have three beautiful sons, Robbie, who was born in 2015, Sam, born in 2017, and Jack who came in 2019. Eoin enjoys playing with them and marveling at how much more talented they are at the sports that he loves, particularly golf.

I am really enjoying Eoin Dempsey’s historical fiction series set in Berlin in the 1930’s. In this 3rd installment of the series, THE GOLDEN AGE, the Ritter family faces new obstacles as the Nazis continue to gain power. Seamus’s factory burns down in a mysterious fire and he is faced with financial ruin and a terrible choice—does he sell and go back to the US with nothing due to a provision in his uncle’s will, or does he agree to start making war munitions for the Nazis, which would allow all his workers to keep their jobs, but go against his conscience?

All the Ritters are faced with similar moral questions and I liked the way the book showed how the National Socialist party infiltrated every aspect of German life in the 1930’s. Some of the children begin to identify with them, to Lisa and Seamus’s horror. Others like the eldest daughter Maureen find ways to work with groups fighting back. The way the family’s personal ties are worked into the narrative, from Lisa and Hannah’s secret Jewish heritage, to her father Dr. Walz’s heinous medical experimentation and connections to officers high up in the Nazi party, made this a chilling read. I can’t wait to see where author Eoin Dempsey takes these characters in book four. 5/5 stars.

The Golden Age is book 3 of 4 in The Lion’s Den series and has Seamus and his American family living in Germany in the 1930’s. It continues as a keep-me-up, page-turning read. The timing of this series is now incredibly relevant to the world today as we read of a monster having convinced enough German people to actively support his evil views and plans with aggressive measures to form his empire by conquering other countries and killing peoples who do not fit his definition of the superior Aryan race. Most of us struggle to understand how Hitler and the Nazi’s successfully conquered most of western Europe, brutally torturing and murdering millions of people. It seems unthinkable!

Yet, some 80 years later, we have Vladimir Putin attempting to establish his empire through unprovoked attacks on a free, peaceful, and independent country. AND the world has not stopped him – yet!

Reading Eoin Dempsey’s The Lion Den series accurately portrays the evil Nazi successes, through fictional characters. It is even more dramatic in view of Putin’s evil and criminal activities which we witness daily. The world did not know what Hitler was doing on a current basis; technology and communications did not exist as today. We see Putin’s atrocities currently. History does repeat itself.

Thank you, Eoin, for a superb and relevant-to-our-day series.

Better and Better

This storyline is absolutely unforgettable! What a twist on direction. You read stories where the people in Europe fled to the USA but now a book where American citizens are choosing to stay and why they are staying. Unputdownable! I personally don’t like reading a series but every book in this series just keeps getting better and better. The book is very well researched and leaves you guessing at every turn.

The Golden Age (The Lion’s Den Series, Book #3)

Do you want to read a novel that grabs you at the entrance gate, and propels you with interest and curiosity, through chapter after chapter? Bestselling author, Eoin Dempsey, invites you into The Golden Age. A time in history when the Nazi party made promises of economic security and prosperity to the impoverished people of Germany. Historical fiction is Eoin Dempsey’s expertise, and his versions of life during The Golden Age do not disappoint!
The setting is Berlin, Germany, in the 1930’s. Tension and fascination abounds within the well written subplots. The characters are believable, and we feel we walk along- side these charismatic characters, as their relevance rings true. Within an appealing family, we share their expectations, their fears, and their frustrations, as they begin to endure the severe effects of the growing Nazi party. Our first instinct, is to see the family abandoning their newly formed roots in Berlin, and escaping to America, but many ties urge them to remain in Berlin. The son is headed towards participating in the Olympics, the wife is making a name for herself as an actress, and the husband is fulfilling the dreams of his uncle by rebuilding a once lucrative, family business. How can they leave, what they feel has been such a good life?
The ambiance of this novel reveals: suspense, mystery, and love. This fast paced and engaging narrative will have you on the edge of your seat!
Dempsey adds originality to the emotional and political events prior to WW2. We see how history sometimes neglects to offer us personal insights into the lives of those, who were affected by Hitler, with his various methods of cleansing and amplifying the German race. The author’s subplots offer a dynamic balance of situations among the family members, as they all attempt to meet their arduous and admirable goals.
The characters have come a long way since book #1 and #2 of this series. And this series just gets better and better! With much enthusiasm and interest, readers will look forward to book #4.

I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Golden Age: Eoin Dempsey

This is the third installment in the "Lion's Den" series. It has been such a pleasure to follow along with the Ritter family from the Great Depression in America to the Rise of Hitler in Berlin in the 1930's. These characters are so compassionately and passionately written that I feel like I have become part of the family. Each character brings a different perception to a time and place that we all know so well.. (or at least I thought I did).

The years before WWII are not foreign to me, but I have never done a deep dive into them, in fact most of the books I read occur during the war, not before it. This series so far has offered such a fascinating timeframe for me, I find myself googling new things every time I put the book down.

It should be mentioned that there is a scene in this one that could be graphic to some.. and at the very least disturbing to the rest that involves mass murder. It is extremely well written and services to drive the plot forward.. but you have been warned.

Anyone who follows any of my reviews knows that I am a huge fan of this Author, and Dempsey yet again does not disappoint with this latest book. Cannot wait for the next (and sadly the last) installment.

Under Nazi rule, Seamus and his family will encounter several challenges as they try to uphold the promise made to Uncle Helmut. The more indoctrinated the ideologies of the Nazi becomes the more Seamus’s family begins to change. Lisa’s father becomes a force in the family and will help Seamus decide whether to return to America with his family or not. The saga continues to be a great read.

So as I stated my review for 1&2 it was a yet again an ending that felt unfinished.... My first reading experience with Eoin Dempsey was with White Rose Black Forest, and I was hooked, I ended up re readi g that book immediately after finishing it I loved it so much. I recommended it to so many people. I thought I'd really enjoy this series, and now that I'm three books in I realized I am. But I still stand by my earlier reviews that the endings, each time, feel so unfinished. I also started to notice another pattern, sometimes in the middle of the book it was an overwhelming amount of repeated details. I get that sometimes you have to read a quick reminder of a previous setting from the previous book, but this wasnt always the case, it just went on as if it was a rambling. Despite all that, and my previous disappointment of the first 2 books, I throughly enjoyed this one- and now all 3 as a whole. I'm excited to read book 4 and see what happens with the family and their future.

Eoin Dempsey writes another terrific book. This is the third sequel to "The Lion's Den"
and an amazing picture of Berlin in the 1930's as the Nazi party comes to power.

The main character having moved from USA during the depression brings his family
to Berlin to work for his uncle. The story unravels into a page turner that you will not put down. I felt that I was in Berlin and privy to the characters daily lives. New characters are introduced in this book and hopefully we will get to read another book about Seamus and his family. Eoin writes with in a style that makes you feel that you met the characters and brings them to life in the book.

All Eoin's books make one feel the historical context of Germany under Hitler and his information is spot on.

I do not want to give any more details as once you read one
of Eoin's books you will search for his next.

What I liked about The Golden Age:
This is the Eoin Dempsey that I know and love! He has a gift for making his characters feel incredibly real and alive. I appreciated getting perspectives from multiple Ritter children, along with Seamus and Lisa. They were all captivating and well-developed. Dempsey skillfully weaves together each character's story as they navigate uncharted territory in 1935 Berlin. Their stories kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat.

Dempsey's writing style is truly exceptional, with a rare talent for breathing life into history through relatable characters and rich settings. His ability to seamlessly blend historical details with captivating plots is unparalleled, making him one of my favorite authors in the realm of historical fiction.

What I disliked about The Golden Age:
I have no complaints, but I need more!

What I think would have made The Golden Age better:
As mentioned above, I have no complaints, I just want and need more of the story and characters!

Would I recommend The Golden Age by Eoin Dempsey:
I strongly encourage everyone to delve into the entire series. It not only offers a captivating read but also helps open your eyes to historical events and their relevance to current politics.

****

It's now 1935 in Berlin, two years after Hitler's rise to power, and the promised Golden Age has come to pass for some. When a fire destroys their factory, Seamus seeks the truth, facing financial ruin and a tough decision between accepting an offer that would break up his family or submitting to Nazi demands. Lisa lands a leading film role, only to be forced to make soul-scarring choices. Maureen, in college, joins an anti-Nazi group, and spies on Lisa’s father, uncovering a secret that could expose the Nazis. Under Nazi rule, Seamus's family faces challenges, changes, and difficult decisions, making the saga a captivating read.

I didn't feel the intensity of the previous books in this series. The main storyline of this one is the beginning of events which turn into the most harrowing Nazi cruelty as will no doubt be chronicled in future volume/s of the series.
I guess it's difficult when telling the story of a family trying to live their lives normally during the rise of the Nazi's. How much did the general population of Germany realise was really going on while the brainwashing and promise of the great future awaiting once Hitler had realised his plans.
Surprisingly for me, this book i feel fell short. The subject too great for a family soap opera. This attempt to harness this family by coincidence of birth or other circumstances to the early stages of a major Nazi atrocity falls short for me.
Things fall into place too easily as do the outcomes. I will though read the next installment as I'm hooked.

- Holy crap was I right about that side character!! The way the Nazi viewpoint completely warped him from where he originally started out (or at least the audience’s perception of him) was chilling as hell.
- Enjoying seeing how the Nazi ideal integration into the school system is starting to separate the Ritter children’s view of the world. Just another example of how insidious the threads of Nazism were in their worming through German society.
- This also applies for how things progressed for Lise’s acting career. The tarnishing of that career’s gleam and the eventual outcome for this character were just painful.
- Another strong showing, exploring how the eventual Nazi progression through the 30s changed Germany and her citizens forever.

In The Golden Age, Book 3 of the Lion's Den series, the story of the Ritter family continues. Set in Germany in the early days of Nazi rule the Ritter's continue to face challenges and the need to make difficult choices. Not every person is who you think they are even if you call them family.

The anxiety I felt while reading this book just built up until the very last page. It kept me on the edge of my seat! Eoin Dempsey is a fantastic storyteller who knows how to weave words that keep a reader engaged. I highly recommend The Golden Age as well as Book 1 - The Lion's Den and Book 2 - A New Dawn. You won't be disappointed!

This is a sort of "in between" book, a story that began in the first two novels in the series does not yet end in this one. Like a second movie in a trilogy, it's the weak link, but I still enjoyed reading about the characters and about the historical period. I think Dempsey brings to life what it was really like to live during that time, in the everyday, practical sense of the word. It's important in that sense, because it answers many questions people ask about the events, along the lines of "why didn't they do anything?", "how did they let it happen," etc. I wonder how such a young author managed this so well. Anyways, I enjoyed the novel and am looking forward to the next installment.

Notes so I know where the series left off: Nazis find out that Lisa is 1/2 Jewish - it ends her acting career. Her doctor father - who is working on ways to gas people effectively - tries to get her and family to go back to America. They do not want to go so instead he tries to kill Lisa and daughter. Lisa and Seamus decide to stay in Germany for another year so that son Michael to compete in Olympics on German track and field team. Maureen and Thomas are in with group opposing Hitler. Other daughter - Fiona - has been taken in by the Nazis propaganda.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Seamus and Lisa continue to live in Germany while Hitler continues spewing his perverted ideas, which are unfortunately widely accepted. Lisa is the illegitimate daughter of the evil doctor; her mother was born Jewish but converted. This does not matter in the eyes of the new regime. Lisa is Jewish as is her daughter Hannah. These stories take place between WW I and WW II and they are their own type of horror story as Hitler rises to power.

The third book in the series by one of my favorite authors does not disappoint. By now the characters feel like family members. The series is set in the late 30’s leading up to WWII, and I have really learned a lot about how Hitler promised so many things that were so misleading. It is horrible what was allowed to happen. I am thankful we have written history to learn from. Can’t wait for book 4!

It feels as if you are living through these terrible times

I can't say that I enjoyed reading this book. There were several times when I had to take a break!

However this book dealt so well with the many new laws brought in by the Nazi party and how it affected the people of Germany at that time. Whilst concentrating on one particular family.

Hopefully the next book will have a happy conclusion.

The saga of the Ritter family continues in Berlin in 1935. Seamus is dealt a blow when his factory is burned and must make a tough decision on whether to rebuild and supply armaments for the Nazi regime. Lisa gets back I to films but when her a Jewish heritage comes to light problems ensue. HeR father has his own dastardly mission to rid the Reich of undesirables. Can’t put these books down and onto the next one

What a story. Book 3 makes you aware of just how sinister the whole Nazi propaganda machine was. They told everyone what they were going to do but no one believed. Lisa’s father is in the middle of research when he gets a call from The Fuhrer to join his medical experiments. The story is short, only 270 pages, but contains lots of information about the period. There is a fire in the factory. Who set it? Seamus Ritter is convinced it was arson and even though the police won’t investigate, he and his factory manager visit the apartment building with a window on the factory and find someone who saw what happened. They are led to a bakery truck but when they visit the bakery, they find the truck was stolen. The ending is a surprise so read these books in order and cross your fingers that the events in the story don’t occur in our time. Hopefully, we have learned from our past.

The gradual compromises

It is interesting to read how the actual people threatened by Hitler did not believe him at first and that he was deliberately slow in bringing about his reforms. It is so diabolical and matches the truth of his actual actions and deeds accomplished despite the utter horror of them.

You feel like you are there!

Soon Dempsey is an artist in telling stories. You feel like you are with the characters as the find their way thru one crisis after another. Using Nazi Germany as a backdrop makes It all even more real. Dempsey as a great writer brings that whole era to life and clarifies our need to be diligent as a free nation.

A must read

Another book of this series I didn't want to end. Mr. Dempsey s writing is smooth often poetic as he takes us on the journey of joy and heartbreak along with Seamus and his family.
I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment of this series. ❤

Exceptional

So true is the story being told in these books. Many atrocities are put in print about the misfortunes the people of Germany and many other countries were made to endure.
