Love and Wanderlust #4

The Player in New Zealand

Rate this book
That surly ex-rugby player making a ruckus in the dark corner of the bar I work at? Yeah, I try to avoid him. Too bad he’s my boss.

I thought I was grumpy AF but I’ve met my match. Tane Parata has two moods when I see him in the bar he co-owns with his sister: grouchy in a dark corner or reliving his rugby days with a rowdy group that likes to cause trouble. I try to avoid him at all costs—the last thing I need is more male drama in my life after my stalker ex. He's why I came to New Zealand—to escape.

When my closest friend in the country—who happens to be Tane’s sister—asks me for a huge favor, I can’t say no. Now I’m Tane’s fake date to a family wedding, and it turns out he is trying to turn his life around.

Adventuring around New Zealand opens my eyes to more than just Lord of the Rings fandom and sheep. I didn’t expect to fall in love with the country…or Tane.

The fourth in the Love and Wanderlust series, The Player in New Zealand is two grumps having a meet-hate before a fake date pushes them together. This standalone contemporary romance is perfect for everyone who wants their wanderlust to continue into the happily-ever-after.

About Liz

I spent ten years traveling the world on a sailboat with my husband. He is not a secret rockstar, nor a grumpy farmer, nor a coworker I accidentally saw naked. I only see him naked intentionally.

Many of my books are based on my travels all over the world – from the Caribbean to Polynesia to Europe. I know exactly how big the world is—having sailed around it—and exactly how small it is, having bumped in to friends worldwide. I’ve been a dishwasher, an engineer, a CEO, and occasionally I get paid to write or sail.

Now I’m in my small town era, both in fiction and real life. I live in Western Massachusetts with a big backyard that would be perfect for a goat if only SOMEONE would let me have one. I like my men to be sweethearts, the bedroom door wide open (with a splash of something new!) and the women to be independent and mature.

I loved it, I literally loved it. This was the book that I needed to make the last couple of days so pleasant.

I've never read any Liz Alden's book, but I will definately fix this mistake in the future.

This book was filled with romance, love, sexy times, happy and funny moments. Tane and Claire were the perfect couple for me. At the beginning they did bicker a little bit but everything started getting better and better.

The other thing I loved within the book was the places Claire visited in New Zealand. I've never been there and I hope that I will have the chance to do it in near future. The places were magnificent.

If you want to read funny kind of enemies-to-lovers romance 😁, this book is definately for you. I promise...you will love it.

Synopsis: I thought I was grumpy AF, but I’ve met my match. Tane has two moods when I see him in the bar he co-owns with his sister: grouchy in a dark corner or reliving his rugby days with a rowdy group that likes to cause trouble. I steer clear at all costs—the last thing I need is more male drama in my life after my stalker ex. He’s why I came to New Zealand—to escape.

Traveling in New Zealand opens my eyes to more than just Lord of the Rings fandom and sheep. I didn’t expect to fall in love with the country . . . or Tane.

The Best Key Points in the Book:

-😠Grumpy x 😠Grumpy
-🤝Meet-Hate
-💐Fake Dating in a Wedding
-👄Openly talk about sex
-🔥Smut
-📖Short and Easy Reading

Hands down, it's the best ARC I requested for all the reasons above. I enjoyed it and I did not see red flags along the main characters' relationship. (3.75✨)

QOTD: What is your dream trip?
My A: Roadtrip across America and visit every National Park! 😍
.
During the pandemic I snagged The Second Chance in the Mediterranean off of NetGalley and loved it. It's book three in Liz Alden's Love and Wanderlust series so of course I ordered the first two books and loved them even more! When I saw she was writing book four, I was pumped. I need a vacation right about now, and I can't think of a better place to escape to than New Zealand!
.
Each book in the series is set in a different location and is travel based. Liz Alden's writing style perfectly describes the landscape, people and cultures of the places in her books and I always end up adding to my travel bucket list. 😅

If you love:
Enemies to friends to lovers
One Bed (one TENT)
Traveling
Fake Dating
Laugh out loud moments
Character growth
Work place romance
HAE
... This one is for you!

Claire and Tane's Roadtrip . . .

Claire is a strong character who is not afraid to say what she thinks. She came to New Zealand to escape her stalker ex, so her time here is limited. Her boss is a grumpy man, Tane Parata, who had a great rugby career until an injury destroyed his dreams. But he is starting to see that he is heading in the wrong direction with his excessive drinking and needs to make a drastic change in his life.

When Claire’s best friend, Nina, suggests that Claire be a fake girlfriend for her brother Tane over the weekend to attend a family wedding, both of them call out NO. But they were talked into it. Nina even arranged cover at the bar, so no excuses. Then she hit them with the next point… they would be driving together for 8 hours. With Tane’s height and injury, he doesn’t fit comfortably in commercial aircraft, so they need to drive. But it would give them time for sightseeing on the way home, which is exciting to Claire. So Tane just groaned and gave in to the ladies.

The weekend went surprisingly well and the family loved Claire. As they did the sightseeing on the way home, being together like this became focused on their being together. She only had a couple more months to work here. Something told her she would really miss him when she had to leave. Or would they have fallen in love by then?

TW: on page Alcoholism and a stalker.

I really enjoyed this one! It was a sweet and quick read for me. Claire and Tane were really cute together. I love how much they cared for another and that there wasn’t any petty drama between them. I wish we could have seen them a little further in the future than what the epilogue placed them at, but I’m also hopeful there will be another book…maybe this time with Iris and Rico?? We’ll see! 4/5⭐️

I can’t begin to tell y’all how excited I was to get approved for an eArc of The Player In New Zealand by Liz Alden. This is book 4 in her Love and Wanderlust series, which features a stunning travel destination as the backdrop for this low angst love story between a retired national level rugby star (and current bar owner) Tane and visiting American (while conveniently escaping a stalker) Claire.

Having never read a Liz Alden book before, I walked into this one pretty unsure of what to expect in regards to steam level, writing style and overall angst, drama, and banter. And you know what, I loved this. The relationship and dialog moved at what I would call a realistic pace, and I gotta say it was super refreshing to read.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Running away from her past in the States, Claire finds herself employed in bar in New Zealand after taking a leap of faith and borrowing some money from her sister Iris. Little did Claire know that the bar she worked for was not only owned by the pleasant Nina but also her very unpleasant alcoholic brother Tane.

When Nina asks Claire to be Tane's date for their cousin's wedding how could she say no after everything Nina's done for her. Pleasantly Tane has decided to turn his life around and the support Claire gives him makes a world of difference.

Let me reiterate how pleasant it is to read a novel during this pandemic (and possibly WW3) about travelling and the beauty of New Zealand. Because the other has actually experienced these locations it makes it so much easier to visualize! And not only does the romance melt your heart but I found all of the characters to be amazing including Iris. I can't wait to experience her time in Bali in the author's upcoming novel The Best Friend in Indonesia which will be released in Summer Vacation: A Limited Edition Collection.

I also enjoyed Tane's struggle and recovery with alcohol, his story may make it sound easy (we all know it's not) but it's so interesting to see how Claire inspired him to take his misery and turn it into a dry bar!

I highly recommend this book, if I could I would of finished it in one sitting!

Re-read September 2024:

I arc read this book in 2022 when it was released and after visiting New Zealand last month, I was keen to read it with a fresh pair of eyes. It felt good to be able to picture the country Claire has landed in, the scenery and the cultural aspects of this book. The love story is still as good as ever, but it’s nice to almost “put a face to a name”. Loved it!! 🥰

Review from 2022:

The story
Claire is a bartender who has moved across the globe to escape a stalker, Devon. Coming from Boston, her sister Iris helped her financially to get a visa that allows her to stay and work in New Zealand. She has found a job working for Nina in her bar, and is staying in a youth hostel. But the night when she meets Nina’s brother Tane, co-owner of the bar, it’s the opposite of a “meet cute”. Will she keep her job?

My thoughts
I adore this series! This is third book of Liz Alden’s that I have read and I feel like I am armchair traveling with her characters. I appreciated this tiny cameo appearance by Lila and Mia from two previous books, but this one is definitely a standalone read. Claire is tough without being hard, unafraid to say what she wants and needs, and is caring of Tane’s heart. She introduces Tane’s Māori culture to the reader, in a way that is respectful. I so enjoyed reading this lovely story! ❤️

Thank you Victory Editing and NetGalley for the ARC, this review is my personal, unbiased opinion.

Claire left Boston and travelled to New Zealand in an attempt to put a distance from and escape her determined stalker. Her plan is to stay a year on a temporary worker's visa and manages to find a job as a bartender in Wellington. A few nights into her new job, a very drunk rugby player tries to go behind the bar to serve himself and his friends. Claire stops him. He insists. She again denies him entry. They argue. He shouts that he's the boss and fires her. The woman who employed Claire is Tane's sister, Nina, brother and sister are partners in the pub, so Tane is her boss. The next morning Tane can't remember what happened but apologises and from then on they avoid each other.

A few weeks later Nina suggests that Tane invites Claire to a family wedding pretending she's his girlfriend. After Nina convinces them that if Tane shows up with a girlfriend it will stop their mother from matchmaking him with a distant cousin, they reluctantly agree. The trip will be a chance for Claire to see Auckland and Nina thinks it'll be fun. Famous last words.

Perfect escapist reading for a dreary afternoon.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author Liz Alden for an advanced electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Claire leaves Boston to escape a past that keeps following her, and finds herself working temporarily in New Zealand. Enter Tane, an ex-rugby player who doesn't know his limits, but who has unlimited good looks. He might not be right, but when a wedding comes up that has Claire posing as his girlfriend, she asks herself, could this be so wrong?

I am so excited to have reached a point where I am pre-approved for Liz Alden's books! This is the third novel of hers that I've read and enjoyed. I like that even though the main focus is the romance, the supporting characters aren't "background" but rather wrapped into the story. Claire and Tane's sisters, Iris and Claire, really added to this. Is it completely realistic? Well, maybe not. However, this is romance, and everyone loves a happy ending.

Yeah.... this was not for me.

The characters did nothing for me especially when the MMC was pulled by the ear by his older sister and smacked on the back of the head for being inebriated and rude. What is this? Discipline your sibling day?! Felt like an immature MMC.

And then this 👇 just gutted me, made me cringe and maybe just maybe my lunch made a reappearance in my mouth 🤢

After a few weeks without, I was definitely horny. While I was not opposed to hookups, and thoroughly enjoyed the one night stand philosophy, an opportunity hadn't arisen yet. Most of the people I'd met in my last hostel had been coupled up or....

You're going to hate Tane....but also, you're going to love him.

New Zealand holds a special place for me. I spent 4 months there, and loved every minute. Whether you've been to New Zealand or not, you can see it through Claire's eyes and visit some of my favorite places, all while alongside a hot ex-rugby player.

This is the funniest and sexiest book I've written. Both MCs have fabulous sisters (one who's going to get her own story!) and find themselves in ridiculous situations. If you like:

An entertaining New Zealand story

I am new to this author, and when I saw this one,I knew I needed to read it.

Claire is a Bostonian, thousands of miles away from her home, trying to outrun her troubles.
She is easy to connect with and enjoy, and the difficulty trying to figure out her strange new home is entertaining.

Tane is a retired rugby player who is carreening out of control. Sparks fly between these two, and it isn't long before things go from fake to feelings, leaving both of them wanting more.

I enjoyed the chemistry between them, and how easily they connected. The banter and energy between Claire and Tane is written well and I enjoyed my read. Looking forward to reading more of this series.

This is the 4th book in the series and I had no problem jumping in mid series. Each book seems to follow a completely different woman in her romantic adventures.

I really like Tane, the retired rugby player. His sister Nina was fun to read. In fact, everything about the book was just easy. Except the female lead Claire - whom I absolutely despised. To say that one character ruined a book for you would be correct in this case. She was bull-headed, and in a few instances, absolutely crass, and it turned me completely off. (As a former Navy sailor, that's saying something!) I skimmed the last half of the book hoping it might improve, but sadly didn't happen.

Trigger warning that might be appropriate for some: on-screen alcoholism.

4 stars for the writing, 1 star for Claire.

Another great book in the Love and Wanderlust series! Just as with the previous books, reading this made me yearn to travel- this time back to New Zealand. I loved hearing about places that I visited once upon a time. I love the characters in this book. Tane starts out in a dark place and you can really see him trying to be a better version of himself. Claire sees him and is unfailingly supportive. I also love Tane’s sister. At one point she had me laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe! This whole series has captivated me.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a fun love story and a literary visit to New Zealand, which sounds amazing and gorgeous.
I’ve been reading some historical fiction lately, and I needed this light-hearted, happy book, the kind where you can sit back, relax, and take a mini vacation. It really cheered me up, I think we all need books like this from time to time.

This is #4 in a series but it feels like a standalone. It’s well-written and plotted, and the characters are fun and feel familiar. I happily recommend this book, 4.5 stars.

I’ve always wanted to go to New Zealand! Check out my New Zealand travelogue reel to see many of the locales in the book.

I really need to stop reading this series before I sleep. Because I don't end up sleeping. I end up staying up until I finish, and then proceeding to stay up even later because the absolute adorableness of these has broken me. They're too much. Too much enemies to lovers, too much travel, too much happiness. They're addicting, and quite possibly my favorite romance series ever.

And I'll admit, i can't even track how the books are related anymore. I've forgotten the characters in the first few books, and I've forgotten most of their plot also. But that doesn't matter. Because what I do remember is how happy they make me. They're adorable, and their characters are so loveable. I may forget who they are, but I don't forget how much I enjoy reading this series.

The real star of this one was the romance. It was so adorable!!! I mean, you've got the grumpy/grumpy trope and enemies to lovers. Throw in forced proximity and meddling family members, and it's perfection (especially when you add in the only one bed trope (; ) Claire and Tane were both so loveable on their own, and even better together! And I'm still not ready to give up. I could read a whole series about these two alone.

Like I said, I stayed up way too late reading this one, so that's it for the review. But really, if you've ever even considering picking up this series, do it. You won't regret it. There's nothing to regret. It's the perfect romp in a tropical destination with romance and friendship. I can't wait for the next book!

This book had me at New Zealand, but The Player and The Bartender gave my favorite country so much life.

Claire is a fish out of water in New Zealand. She is trying to make an unexpected move to the country work on so little funds, and it includes working at a bar/winery. This isn't her first barkeeping gig -- in fact, she loves mixology -- but an awkward encounter with her boss is not exactly how she wanted to make a good first impression.

Despite her rocky start with Tane, retired rugby player and curmudgeonly bar owner, they eventually learn to co-exist with each other, even helping each other out. When Tane has to attend his cousin's wedding, Claire gets roped into being his fake date to avoid Tane's overeager mama from setting him up. But with their close proximity, will their relationship continue to be fake or move into something more authentic?

This was a fun, sweet read between two people who feel out of place when life throws them for a loop. Tane and Claire might have initially thought they had little in common, but as they -- and the readers -- learn more about each other, we all find that there is so much more than common ground. There is a connection around and mutual respect for their own struggles. I love how Liz Alden slowly takes us on a journey as these two move from enemies to friends to lovers. With the wonderful backdrop of New Zealand, no less.

This is part of a series, but as someone who jumped in with this book first, I did not feel lost at all. I am looking forward to reading Iris' story and take a world tour with the rest of the books in the series.

***4 Stars***

There are many reasons why people pick up the books they read. Author. Cover. Subject. Or even the title and when I saw “New Zealand” in the title, my curiosity peaked.
Then I saw Rugby and I was all like gimmegimmegimme..because I love New Zealand and Rugby is my fav sport (especially when it’s AB’s rugby)
So I had to jump in and I gotta say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. From the characters and their antics to the setting, it all worked for me and has me really wanting to visit New Zealand again.

I adored Claire and Tane. Claire may see herself as a bit grouchy and quirky, she owns it all. She is vivacious and definitely not afraid to speak her mind in most situations. Tane. First impressions weren’t great, but as the book progresses, you see just how huge his heart is and how charming he can be and it was hard to not fall in love with him.

Their journey to their HEA may have started out a bit rocky, but it was a fun one. I really liked them together. Their bantering and flow was on point, even when things were a bit rocky, and though things do happen somewhat quickly, they had me rooting for them to find a way to make things stick.

This is my first read by the author and it was a winner. The writing was engaging, the pacing good and though I would have liked to have Tane’s POV at times, I liked being in Claire’s head as she experienced New Zealand for the first time. There are a few situations in here that could be triggering for some, but they aren’t anything too intense and, IMHO, handled well. As for New Zealand. I honestly felt like I was back there. The chill vibe and beautiful country jumped off the page for me. And the supporting cast of characters were awesome! Nina was my fav, hands down, but Emily and Iris were just as awesome.

So, if you’re looking for a fun, low on the angst read then this is a must click for you!

This is the fourth book in Liz Alden’s Wanderlust series which is inspired by journey’s as she’s been a full-time traveler. I have read the prequel and third book in this series but the series to my knowledge is not interconnected so they can be read out of order without any problem. This book follows Claire as she move’s to New Zealand on a year long youth work visa. She works in a bar and develops feelings for Tane, the grumpy ex-rugby player who co-owns the bar with his sister.

I have had a couple friends do the youth work visa thing in New Zealand and a couple other countries and am genuinely surprised that more books don’t use this premise, so I was familiar with this process. I really liked Claire she was fun and quirky and a wonderful sunshine character. Tane grew on me through the story. I did struggle with Tane’s alcoholism at the beginning of the book and how easily he seemingly got over it. I was happy to find that in the author’s note that Liz noted that Tane’s experience with ending alcohol dependency was not typical and should not be treated as such. I really liked all of the side characters and found that they added to the story. The book was a nice, short read which kept me engaged and kept the story moving which i greatly appreciated. I also really enjoyed all the traveling that Claire and Tane did which made me really want to visit New Zealand.

I have read all of Liz's books so far and was delighted when I finally realized how this one was connected to the others. Don't worry, this is totally a stand alone but there is just a fun easter egg for long time readers. (also let me take a second to encourage that your read her earlier books in the Love and Wanderlust series because they are awesome)

This book felt a little heavier than some of her earlier books where there was almost a slow burn and a sticky emotional backstory for both characters that drew me in and broke my heart. Tane is a retired rugby player with a chip on his shoulder and a vice he can't shake. He is the epitome if grump when we meet him so to see how he evolves over time was extremely entertaining. Claire is an American working in New Zealand at Tane and his sister’s bar, as she tries to escape her past and start over. She needs a total life reset after a fairly traumatic relationship and finds refuge in mixing drinks and sight seeing. These two were both kinda grumps which honestly was super funny to read especially when they ended up in a fake dating situation…. (one of the best tropes ever). They didn’t exactly do a 180 but I do feel that both characters managed to grow quite a bit and find their sweet soft center in each other.

As in all of Liz's books there was travel, epic scenery, adventure, and steamy steam. Claire is wounded by her past but she is bold, strong, and determined. Liz doesn’t write wilting flowers and I love that for romance as a genre. And even though Tane is a big imposing character he expresses himself when necessary in the best way.

I love how this story slowly evolved and incorporated so many different tropes. I mean who does not like only one tent or fake dating or secret dating??? And when the sisters get involved things get adorably funny. By the end my heart had melted and I cried happy tears. There was low angst and lots of adult conversations and experiences.

I highly recommend this book (and the whole series!)

New Zealand is one of my favorite places in this world to visit, so anytime I see a romance set there, I can't resist it. Add in a hot former rugby player trying to find his way after retiring and a smart, no-nonsense bartender from Boston, and I felt like I hit the jackpot with this sweet and steamy romance. My only regret is that I'm not young enough to qualify for the one year NZ work visa that the heroine, Claire, uses to get away from a former friend turned stalker that was creating havoc in her life back in Boston.

Once in NZ, Claire quickly settles into a job, new friends, and dealing with her somewhat grumpy new boss, Tane. All is not smooth sailing, but Claire has a great attitude and a willingness to tackle her problems, while Tane starts to see that he is drinking too much and needs to straighten out his own life. Both are very supportive of the other and decide to live in the moment, and enjoy their combustible chemistry, without worrying too much about the fact that Claire's time in NZ has an expiration date. Of course, there's a solution to that problem, otherwise, it wouldn't be a romance. Add in some wonderful scenes in various locations as Claire (with Tane as her tour guide) explores various fun tourism spots, as well as glimpses of Maori culture and you have a most enjoyable romance. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

Book Review
The Player in New Zealand
A Novel Written By Liz Alden
Fiction - Romance
Published 2022
270 Pages
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved everything about this book - the characters, the setting, and the plot. I was wrapped up in this story from the very beginning.

This story takes places in Wellington, New Zealand. The main character and narrator, Claire Bailey, has relocated to New Zealand to get away from a stalker. She is working as a bartender at a bar owned by siblings, Nina and Tane. Tane Taumata is an ex star rugby player. An injury has forced him into retirement. Unhappy with retirement, Tane is developing a drinking problem. Tane and Claire do not get off to a good start when they first meet. Both can be grumpy. As the story progresses they begin to see that first impressions aren’t always correct. This leads to Claire posing as Tane’s boyfriend for a family wedding. These two flawed characters begin to support and help each other.

I learned a lot about New Zealand’s customs and traditions while reading this book. I enjoyed sightseeing through the country with Claire with Tane as the tour guide.

“Between Tane and New Zealand itself, somehow I was finding my place.”

Perfect Getaway!

I have never been to New Zealand, but now it is on my list! This was the perfect travel escape novel without being stereotypically set on a beach.

Claire needed an escape to a location as far away as she could and landed in New Zealand. Her plan was to leave male drama behind, but a rowdy customer in the bar where she works proved that somewhat difficult. Oh, and that guy happens to be her boss!

With a turn of events, agreeing to be her boss, Tane's date to a wedding allows her to explore around New Zealand. As she begins to fall in love with the country, Claire might be falling in love with a bit more.

Both Claire and Tane are such strong characters. I loved watching their personalities develop on their own and together. This story combined a fake date, forced proximity, and limited time so beautifully. And all of the supporting characters fit into the story so perfectly. While I have not read any other books in the series yet, I cannot wait to read more about each of their stories. This is a great stand alone story, but I'm hooked and ready to read the rest!

*Thank you to Liz. I received and advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Claire is in New Zealand for a year on a work visa-- a move she made to get away from her stalker. Tane, a recently retired rugby player, owns the bar where she recently started working. But Claire doesn't know that, and treats him like the drunk customer she thinks he is. Eventually, they reach a tenuous truce... until Tane's sister convinces them that Claire should pose as his girlfriend at a family member's wedding.
Suddenly, the two of them find themselves in close proximity, unable to ignore their mutual attraction. Claire is adamant that she doesn't want a relationship-- her time in New Zealand is short, after all-- but the two keep coming back to each other.
Claire's journey is about learning to trust herself and the people around her. Tane's journey is about accepting that his rugby career is over and finding better ways to process than with alcohol. Together, they work through their problems and create something beautiful and special.
The Player in New Zealand is a mild enemies-to-lovers with a beautifully done fake dating trope. It's sweet, and inspiring, and definitely a book I'd recommend to just about anyone.

From the moment I picked up this book I didn’t want to put it down. The story pulled me in and I fell in love with Tane & Claire. Claire moves to New Zealand to get away from a bad “relationship” and ends up working in a bar that Tane owns. Tane is a grumpy retired rugby player who is using alcohol to cope with life. Tane see’s he needs to make a change and Claire is a great support to him. Claire gets roped into being Tane’s fake girlfriend for a family wedding and the two agree to be friends with benefits for a night.... but can they hold to their arrangement?

One of my favorite things about this author is how much time she spends teaching the readers about new locations and cultures. I now have a new destination added to my bucket list. While this book is full of sweet, funny parts, there is also some heavy subject matter that gets addressed: Domestic Violence & Alcoholism.

If you enjoy sweet, thoughtful reads, I encourage you to check out this book and the others in this series.

Can I give this 10 stars? I want to give it 10, no 100 wait 1000! Okay, I’ll stop!

So I love all of Liz’s books but there was something about Clare and Tane (maybe their super hot chemistry) that shot them to joint favourite couple with Seb and Marcella (Side note, if you haven’t read their stories, you need to)

I loved everything about this book….

✨Clare and Tane were wonderful together and as individuals. They really cared about each other and you could feel this on the page.

✨Side Characters… both Clare and Tane have great sisters that make interesting and mischievous side characters.

✨I lived in Australia for 6 years and never visited New Zealand and I really regret it, but reading this story is the next best thing because I really felt like I was there in the hostel and the bar with Clare!

So, yeah, if you want a Rom-com filled with steamy scenes and wanderlust this is definitely it!

This was such a lovely book and I so enjoyed visiting New Zealand through the eyes of Claire. I thought she was the perfect grump and I most seriously want to be her friend. She seemed like so much fun and did a lot of the things I wanted to do like visit overseas after college.

Claire and Tane’s first interaction is the interaction nightmares are made of and I enjoyed it so much. Their gradual acceptance of each other and their growing relationship.

*Spoilers*

I thought that it was the sweetest thing that Tane went exploring New Zealand with Claire including to Hobbiton, (the one place which he wasn’t keen on). I loved how supportive Claire was of Take and helping him with his drinking problem and finding nonalcoholic options for him to enjoy. It was such an important block in their foundation as friends and then as a couple.

This has been one of my top reads so far this year.

Thank you so much to NetGalley for giving me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

Oh what a breath of fresh air this was. It really was a lovely read with some added humour in their. I enjoyed the relationships between all characters in this, and the development of the love between Tane and Claire. A fake date can lead to so much more for these two. The sexual tension was evident from the start. The idea that two grumpy people with hard pasts can come together like this and fall in love is beautiful.
I also loved learning more about New Zealand and Maori culture, so thanks to the author for that.
This book will definitely leave you full with laughter and happiness for what is a great story
