The First Black Republic tells the story of how a group of enslaved Africans came together to fight for their freedom and created the first independent Black nation in the Americas. A lesson that is often left out of the history books, The Haitian Revolution caused shock waves throughout the world and set the wheels in motion to end the Trans-Atlantic slave trade forever. This illustrated picture book published by Haitian-American author Frantz Derenoncourt, Jr. engages young readers in a way that they could fully appreciate the accomplishments of their ancestors.
This is a great book I absolutely love. As a black young man growing in American we never learn about any of this in school and often feel left out so if like to give a big thanks to the man who wrote this book you are to be known for years to come.
Great! The mountainous island of Ayiti in the West Indies was the home of the Taino people. During its early years it had an abundance of gold that would later be coveted by invaders. The island would go through many changes including slavery, revolt, and independence of the African population.
The book is well written and highlights important facts in Haitian history. It has good illustrations and a fun facts section at the end. This inspirational read can be enjoyed by both children and adults. A valuable addition for your home library!
🌷Book Quotes:
"The slaves that escaped to the mountains were called Maroons."
"Toussaint led the revolutionary army, along with his top officers, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and Henri Christophe."
"My mission for this book is to establish a sense of pride in black youth all over the world."
The story of Haiti is a sad example of white men trampling the black men. The US for their invasion of Haiti and France for demanding a huge ransom that broke the economy both nations need to make a great amends. Poor Haiti never had a chance of becoming a self supporting economy. Pure racism has caused Haiti to be stuck in time and I submit never had a chance. This brief history is a good introduction to the reader to make them aware of a nation that really needs our help.
As a Haitian native, I've chosen to read this book as a refreshment on my history which is really considered the history of all men and women of colour, despite our nationality. Our ancestors fought and spilled their blood so we can be where we are today. Yes, I am able to peacefully wake up a Sunday morning and read a book because of the bravery of those men and women. I'd like to thank author Derenoncourt for sharing his excellent work with us. Thank you and may God bless us all!!!!
