Beggar's Choice

The Summer of Us

Rate this book
It’s going to be a long hot summer.

John is an exceptionally good lawyer. He’s driven, arrogant and hides a warm heart underneath a façade of cool politeness. He’s used to people disliking him but for some reason when meeting Matt in London the other man’s open dislike of him bothers him. He’s therefore surprised to find himself offering Matt a place to stay in his villa in the South of France while he’s working nearby. He’s surprised because he’d actually planned to spend the summer working on his book and plotting to get his ex-wife back.
However, his perfect plans take a blow as the long hot summer progresses and the two men get closer, and John starts to nurse an unexpected attraction to his houseguest from hell.
Matt is John’s polar opposite. He’s warm, funny, sociable and scruffy. He loves people and they love him back. However, to his consternation he hates John more than he hates Marmite, and Marmite makes him vomit. He hates his arrogance, his public school voice and the air of superiority that he carries around. The idea of staying in his home with just him for company sounds torturous and not in a good way.
However, as the hot, lazy days slip by he’s forced to realise that maybe he’s not such a good judge of character after all, because underneath that arrogance is a warm, funny, vulnerable man who’s incredibly sexy. The only problem is that while Matt is gay John is completely straight and Matt now wants him more than he’s ever wanted anything in his life.

See what happens when two men who think that they have nothing in common apart from a past mutual hatred find out that they might actually be each other’s future.

From the author of the popular Beggar’s Choice series comes another scorchingly hot romantic comedy.
This is a spin-off from the Beggar’s Choice series. It features characters from the series but can be read as a complete standalone.

Sexy, enemies (eventually friends) to lovers, perfect HEA, and a villa in France. What's not to love?

Quite a bit actually.

1. The GFY was pitifully undeveloped; there's a hint that John might be bi (which of course he is), but it's brushed aside. For John it's all about Matt; hot and yet not, because bisexuals aren't unicorns, people.

2. Weird appearances by Matt's ex-boyfriend and John's ex-wife. Everyone just kept showing up at John's villa overlooking Cannes like it was a community center or something. There were "special circumstances," but soap opera much?

3. Speaking of which, do real people own villas? Everyone was too rich, too good looking, too rich, too perfect, too rich. I prefer reading about normal people who don't jet off on vacation at a moment's notice, sip Pastis, and throw pillows at each other in jest.

3. Atrocious—no, NONEXISTENT—editing. Seriously, commas were MIA (especially in dialogue). The present-tense first-person POV didn't help.

I'm sorry Bella that was rude of me.

Well you're not swan diving into an empty pool I guess the entertainment part of the afternoon is over . . . Let's get back to summing up just how much more work is actually involved than Charlie quite covered with his offer of a three month luxury holiday away form my troubles.

Why did you stay John?

We'll put it to one side shall we John?

Yes I'll do that Matty.

I know that's what they all say. Oh my God Matty that's so fucking good. You smell really nice babe.

Oh Johnny is it all getting a bit too gay for you? You've felt it babe, I know it.

The writing got in the way of the story, and the plot didn't amount to much more than John and Matt hanging out at the villa and watching fireworks. There is the inevitable miscommunication, followed by a Big Misunderstanding.

Once the MCs get together (around 60 percent), the sex is hot and the ending is truly sweet, so I'm going with 2.5, rounded down.

There was a good bit in this story to like, but it didn't entirely work for me, either.

I liked both John and Matt, but the pacing was pretty slow, so the story felt soooooo looooong.

I was less thrilled with the amount of steam, by which I mean that PENISES SHOULD BE PUT AWAY SOMETIMES.

I'm not a prude, but once I've had my fill of sex on-page, I'm looking for the fast forward button on the remote and pulling a big ole' commercial skip until that shit's tucked away again. :- /

#SometimesLessIsMore

And please, for the love of God, can my next read NOT have a "Big Misunderstanding" scene.

I'm sooooo done with "stupid men saying stupid shit that they don't really mean" for a while.

No ex-wives, either, thanks.

And no marriage proposals, just for like 3 or 4 books.

Overall, I'd rate this one at around 3.5 stars.

Okay.
Yeah, I thought it was ok.
It could very well be my mood. I was looking for an easy comfort read and I barely felt the hug or tug of my lips. Usually, Morton woos me and wins me over.
John and Matt = an opposites-attract, sexual awakening, walk into the sunset HEA.
All of the elements were there...I just missed the concoction mixing and blending like it always does with Lily's guys.
Maybe she's grown into her craft since this 'earlier' book?
Maybe I'm just having an 'off' day.
Not bad at all.
But..not knock me off my feet either.

This book had potential, I actually enjoyed the first 40% a lot. I love slow burns but I think if you stretch it too much you just kill the sexual tension and when they finally get together the reader has lost interest. That's what happened to me.

My 2 stars don't mean I hate the book. I thought it was ok, it was an easy read but I just didn't love it.
There was some unnecessary drama that made me roll my eyes. I say this with all due respect but authors please do not create Disney villains. Readers are smart, we don't need you to create a super horrible character for us to root for the MC. This pisses me off!

Anyway feel free to ignore me, other readers have enjoyed it so it's probably a case of 'it's me and not you'

This was LM's first foray into MM so my rating relfects this. Whilst I like it, it didn't blow me away like her newer work does and I think that was down to the pacing which I felt was slow in places.

I still enjoyed it so 3.5 stars from me.

In London and Cannes...
They begin with a misunderstanding, and five months later, Matt is being sent, by mutual friends, to direct a renovation in Southern France. He'll need a place to eat and sleep, so he's staying at John's villa. Before Matt leaves, he fires Ed from his job, and as his lover.
John is considering getting back with his ex wife, Bella, but why? * Matt is a PA for Bram,

and owns his own company. He's a shaggy haired blonde with brown eyes... a sleek body,

who likes running and surfing. Cannes sounds great.

* John, is a high profile lawyer,

dark haired, blue eyed and hot, with a well toned body and muscles. John's villa is his place of peace, beauty, calm, with lovely scents, winding street and happiness.

Matt arrives and they clear the air on the misunderstanding right away, so their friendship begins.
Matt loves the area, the men tour, eat, relax, have fun and talk. Matt begins the work, and John has an internal struggle going on, with his desire for Matt. He's fooled around in school days, but not since he's been an adult. Why is he getting these feelings now?

So the summer days pass, the re-do is hard work, and John has paper work and writing going on.
Their flirtations turn to more, and the men are dealing with their emotions.
Eventually, after talks and kisses, they do more. John has never felt this much passion in his life. Matt agrees, no one has ever made him feel this deeply. These characters pop on the pages, both so strong, witty, and in their prime in life and work.

I love Lily Morton's stories, characters and the way she can make me stay glued to her books.
When their summer had ended, the crumbled villa is like new, and it's time to go back to London. How will their passion survive?

A marvelous, romantic tale of two men who finally get their dream come true.
ENJOY !

Such a nice story ruined by bad editing. I cannot imagine how this was published like this. I think the author's and editor's laptops both were misding the comma key. Otherwise it's inexplicable how we ended up with this book.

“The Summer of Us” is a very sweet and romantic read which combines three tropes of GFY, “enemies to lovers” and also “friends to lovers”. There is very minimal angst in this read and I loved how the author beautifully writes the GFY part in the story. The romance is very engaging and passionate. Both the MCs were very different characters but in a very base way were completely similar with emotional baggages and past hurts. I loved them both and rooted for them wholeheartedly.

John Harrington
is a very rich and successful lawyer who works for the band, Beggar’s Choice while also being a very good friend to the members of the band. He does not have many friends he can trust in his life except for the guys of the band, who have included him in their inner circle completely. But not everyone from Beggar’s Choice likes him.

Matt Dalton is Bram’s, bass guitarist of Beggar’s Choice, best friend. Matt is not in the band, he is Bram’s PA and thus a permanent member of the inner sanctum of the brand. Matt dislikes John from their very first meeting. Everyone trusts John and likes him but Matt can’t seem to get over his hate for the uppity and arrogant lawyer.

When Chase Hudson, lead singer of Beggar’s Choice ropes both Matt and John in together to help him restore a villa in the beautiful southern France, the polar opposite duo finds themselves developing a friendship which feels right with every passing second. They spend time together and finds out about each others past hurts and how those have affected them in their lives. They develop a kinship which is rare and freeing. Along with their developing friendship, attraction grows in equal measure.

Matt is gay and is insanely attracted to John but the guy is straight and Matt does not want to become anyone’s experiment. He wants a lover who will make him his number one priority and John being straight with an ex-wife he is trying to woo back, is definitely not the guy he should fall for. But similar feelings are plaguing John too. John has always been attracted to women so his intense attraction to Matt confuses him. He has never been in love before but his feelings for Matt are definitely much more than “just friends”. He is attracted to Matt and he is ready to go all the way and accept his new found sexuality if it means he can find happiness and true love for the first time in Matt.

“The point is,” I say quietly. “I know everything about you because you fascinate me because -” I pause and swallow hard. “Because I love you, and you’re so fucking special to me.” His head shoots up, shock written on his face and then a blinding joy that relaxes and enervates me at the same time. “I’ve never been bothered enough to know these things about any previous lovers. I really couldn’t fucking care less before you, and if that makes me a bastard then so be it because I’m your bastard.” ~John

I loved both Matt and John. Matt is so warm and friendly with an amazing quality to make friends anywhere he goes. He is so lovable and awesome. Matt had a bad childhood when his parents betray him but he has found his family in Bram and the other guys from the band. He had been in relationships a lot but he has never found love. He always came second to his lovers and this time he wants someone to make him their first priority. He falls in love with John but he guards his heart fiercely because he thinks John not reciprocating his love will break him.

John on the other hand lives behind a cool façade which he develops to cope with a cold, loveless childhood where his parents never gave a shit about him. He had a lot of money and a successful career but love was starkly missing from his life. He was always felt unbalanced with Matt and strangely affected by the hot surfer. Their vacation together finally shapes their relationship from enemies to friends and then to lovers of the forever kind.

“I want you to have everything of me Matty. I want to be totally yours.”
“Johnny you already are sweetheart. Everything that you are is mine. Your arrogance, your vulnerability, your ability to make me laugh harder than anyone does, your kindness and your loyalty. They’re all mine and I will protect everything that you give me fiercely because you’re mine.”
“God, all yours,” I whisper. “I love you so fucking much. Please don’t ever leave me.”
“Never,” he says solidly, and his kiss on that rainy beach as we sway in the wind clutching each other tightly, is both a welcome home and a vow to the future, and for the first time in my life I totally let go with someone, secure in their love.

As I said earlier, I loved the author’s handling of John’s sexuality. He acknowledges his attraction and feelings for Matt without denial and unnecessary angst. His all-in attitude towards his love for Matt was amazing especially when he has been straight his entire life and falling in love with a man has never been on his radar. You could feel his unconditional love through his words which was adorably more like a nervous babble than proclamation of love*chuckles* (read the gooey epilogue and you will get what I mean!!!)

“I don’t know whether I’ve just discovered that I’m gay so much or just that I’ve discovered you. You’re my person and I think that I was just waiting for you. Man or woman, it doesn’t matter to me. The only thing that matters is that you are mine and I am yours.” ~ John

The pace of the book was extremely nice. The gradual development of the friendship and then finally to being lovers is beautifully done. The guys get together at about 70% of the book but the build up to that part was fantastic. When they do act on their feelings, the act just felt seamless and natural. They were scorching hot together and their love making will make you flustered and content at the same time.

I have to mention the romantic and mesmerizing setting of this romance before I end this review. A villa in the hills around Cannes with an amazing view of the sparkling sea and heady scents of nature was just what completed this beautiful summer romance. The guys go on various trips around the neighborhood and I had a swell time enjoying the beautiful Cannes through them. Also the songs featuring in every chapter sets the tone perfectly for that chapter. I had my iPod out and I listened to every one of them while reading this book. It was a great experience. Loved the songs!!!

GORGEOUS!!!

Overall, this read is a very nice and sweet GFY romance with very minimal angst. If you are looking for a beautiful friendship and an equally passionate romance in the spectacularly beautiful Cannes then don’t miss out on this one. I would recommend this book to all romance lovers!!!

Lily's first published MM and, while I know friends weren't as keen, I actually enjoyed it.

Not quite as much snark as her later books but still enough humour that I found myself sniggering a lot while reading.

A bit sweet, a lot steamy, not too much angst and although the dreaded "misunderstanding/miscommunication" trope reared its head, at least Matt did try at the time to do something about it.

As grand gestures go, I thought the final couple of chapters were utterly fab.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 4 Summer Nights stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I really enjoyed this, it was a nice relaxing read spending time with two good men in a villa in the South of France, it felt like I was on a summer holiday myself.

When John and Matt first met there was a misunderstanding so they both disliked each other with a passion.

They have the same friends and one asks Matt for a big favour go to France for three months to manage the renovation of his house. John is already planning on going  to his own villa over summer so being polite he invites Matt to stay with him.

John and Matt clear the air and start spending the long hot summer nights together getting to know each other, Matt is gay and John is straight but when an ex of Matt shows up, the green eyed monster also shows up and the sparks soon fly.

I enjoyed the progression of their relationship and the story worked perfectly for me and I loved the epilogue.

After reading this I want to read the Beggar's Choice series, when it gets rereleased, which I hope happens soon.

Kept thinking I should like this more than I did. It's a slow sweet story, but unfortunately I never connected making it a long read.

I think a lot of the issue was first person present tense, being told by a character how they appear to others feels odd. And a little repetitive.

It's so slow-burn that the fizz was gone by the time they got together. In fact the frequently given chance for second thoughts were voiced so often I had second thoughts about the wisdom of it.
And all the getting to know each other didn't seem to mount to much when they have their misunderstanding, because how could they both misread things so badly?

People kept appearing at the Villa - who doesn't have their own villa? - then disappearing without a word about it. Exs galore.

Lots of beautiful rich people, even those who at one point had nothing seem to now be rich enough to have a spare house somewhere ideallic and the option to jet off for three months. Which is kinda yawn-worthy i prefer me some real people. Brand names dropped everywhere. And the boys own a number of different colour board shorts, we get each described.

It's not bad, just lacked spark.

5 fantastic stars. Omg how I love Lily Mortons books.
She writes and describes the characters perfectly. This is a such a sweet story set mostly in France.
The absolute witty sarcasm combined with genuine love makes my heart melt.
The description of how one person can love another so deeply is truly inspiring. I went from laughing out loud to almost tears. Such a great read.
One of my favourite m/m writers. I highly recommend Lilys books. ❤🥰👌📚

3,5 stars, rounded down because of Ed.

This one was one of the few Lily Morton books I had not read yet. It was her first mm romance, and I think that shows. Even though I loved Matt's and John's chemistry - I mean, they were really hot together! - I can't help but have a few issues that made this book work less for me than I'm used to with a book by this author. But I guess we can't love all books equally, can we? Even if it's written by one of your favorite authors.

The characters were interesting. Every now and then I just like to escape into this unreal world where money isn't an issue and where the mc's are arrogant, very straight lawyers who, to their own greatest surprise, find themselves falling for a man. A man they don't even like.
One of the things that bothered me was that John and Matt went too fast from hating each other to wanting to kiss the other. It didn't feel quite real. But once they got past their mutual dislike and hate, phew...they were really hot! A lot of story's can win me over by a few hot, well written sexy scenes! 😉

And then Lily decided to throw in Ed. Ugh. I hated this guy. It didn't make sense that he came to the villa, and it didn't make sense that Matt and John both allowed him to stay. He was Matt's ex, a childish, immature, egocentric and selfish model, who was there for reasons God only knows.

When he was finally gone (which took way too long), another ex shows up; this time in the form of John's ex-wife. The woman he doesn't and did not love, but who bruised his ego by calling for a divorce and so he decided earlier on, he wanted her back. Just so he could show the world he was capable of winning his wife back, that the divorce was just a misunderstanding or a mistake that, if it had been up to him, never should have been made in the first place. Which was a lie, of course.
I think she was a bit too much of a cliched fm romance person. I did not like her either, though I did not hate her like I did Ed. But still, I really wondered (again) why she was allowed to stay at the villa, when all the time John knew he would never want her back, because he was in love with Matt.

Then we get the great misunderstanding, which fortunately does not last long, but still...

Another thing that kind of annoyed me (but that's just a me-thing) was the way John called Matt 'sweetheart' all the time. It's not an endearment I like, and he said it way too often.

This all seems kind of negative, so I feel the need to point out that I did enjoy Matt and John together (apart from the 'sweetheart' thing) - they were hot, they had chemistry, and I really liked Matt as an mc. There were just too many oddities that bothered me and that made this book work less for me than I am used to when I read a Lily Morton book.

That was very, very sweet.

The GFY aspect totally worked for me here. It's often not the case as several things tend to piss me off in this kind of stories but not here. This was done beautifully!

John and Matt were both adorable. The story was sweet and, as usual as I discovered with this author, The characters banter and quick wit were great and funny.

I'm so glad I found this author. her books are a balm of sweet, funny and hot...

Another wonderful story by Lily Morton. This book was a slow burn, gay for you, and enemies to lovers book. The first 40 pages were kind of slow, but then the story picks up and never lets you down. It’s one of those that makes you cry happy tears. Matt and John are just perfect together.

3.5 stars for this sweet yet snarky romance. I enjoyed the build between John & Matt and found them both to be unique characters. I can certainly see Lily's style now after reading two books in a row and the use of humour, sarcasm and sass is the main formula. This was fun and somewhat light.

I started this in 2018 and never finished it. It didn't really pique my interest that much at the time but now that I have read pretty much all of Lily Morton's MM books, I thought I would give it another chance. It was very nice but kind of dry at least comparatively to her newer books which are hilarious. There's humor and the characters are lovely and clever but it doesn't rise to the top as her other books do for me. I still liked the story and as I said before, it was nice and I am glad I finished it since I have had it from Prime reads for over 2 years.

B+ / 4.5 stars.

Read for the July prompt in the 2019 TBR Challenge (contemporary romance)

Unlike the historicals prompt, where I always have lots of books to choose from, the contemporaries one usually sees me scrabbling around to find something to read because I like to choose my TBR Challenge reads from books I already own – and contemps aren’t really my thing so I don’t buy many.  I did, however, find a handful on my Kindle and, having recently enjoyed Lily Morton’s Rule Breaker in audio, (seriously, it’s fantastic) I decided to read one of the author’s earlier books, The Summer of Us, which is a spin-off title from her Beggar’s Choice series about a world-famous rock band.

Matt Dalton has been friends with the members of Beggar’s Choice for years; the bassist, Bram, is like a brother to him, and even though Matt runs a highly successful and elite staffing agency he also works as Bram’s PA. He’s charming, funny, outgoing and the sort of guy who gets on with everybody.  Everybody that is, except John Harrington, the band’s lawyer.  Matt disliked John from their first meeting, and that opinion has never changed in spite of the fact that everyone else in the band likes him and regards him as ‘one of them’.  But as far as Matt’s concerned, John is bossy, abrasive, arrogant… and it doesn’t help that he’s been very inconveniently attracted to him from the moment he first laid eyes on him.

John is rich and successful, but doesn’t have much of a life outside of his work.  The face he presents to the world is cool and self-contained, but it’s a façade behind which lies a gentle dreamer with a soft heart and a longing – one even he hardly recognises – to make a real connection with someone he can share his life with.  John knows Matt doesn’t like him but isn’t sure why… or why it bothers him so much.  So it’s as much a surprise to him as to anyone when he finds himself offering to put Matt up at his villa in the South of France when Charlie, the band’s lead singer, tells John that Matt has agreed to oversee the renovations on a property he’s just purchased near the one John owns.

What starts out seeming as though it’s going to be an enemies-to-lovers story quickly morphs into something else when Matt arrives at the villa and immediately jumps head-first into an apology for making snap judgements and then suggests they start afresh:

“I didn’t really give you a chance, which was a shitty thing to do, so I’d like to give us a second chance to become friends.  After all, we’re going to be spending a lot of time together and it would be a lot easier if it’s not in conditions that would have made Stalin uncomfortable.”

John is only too pleased to agree, and it doesn’t take long for both men to realise that they like each other a great deal, and to discover that, while on the surface they’re chalk and cheese, they actually have a lot more in common than they could ever have imagined.  From this new start, comes a deep friendship, a sense of true kinship and, for John, the confusion that comes with the realisation that he’s strongly attracted to Matt despite never having been attracted to men before.  Matt, who has been struggling with the fact that he’s only grown more attracted to John the more he’s got to know him, believes John is straight – hell, Bram told him that John was trying to get back with his ex-wife – and he isn’t prepared to be anyone’s experiment.  He’s realised that in past relationships, he was always the one to make sacrifices and to give while the other person took and now he’s decided he’s never going to settle again. He wants someone who is going to put him – Matt – first, and John surely can’t be that guy.  Can he?

I really enjoyed the way the central relationship developed, with the two men moving from antagonism to friendship and eventually to lovers.  They’re three-dimensional characters with baggage that continues to inform their attitudes and relationships; John’s aristocratic parents never really gave a shit about him, so he’s grown up reluctant to form connections for fear he’s not good enough, while Matt’s religious parents threw him out at fifteen when he came out, and he’s still carrying a shedload of guilt about a past relationship that went very badly wrong.  Ms. Morton’s wonderfully snarky (and wonderfully British) humour is very much in evidence, and although the appearances of the dreadful ex-boyfriend and equally dreadful ex-wife are somewhat clichéd, they nonetheless help to move things along a little by highlighting the contrasts between the men’s  past and present relationships.  John’s lack of angsting over and acceptance of his sexuality and his feelings for Matt feel right for his character; he says early on in the story that he’s never been one for strong emotions, and it’s obvious that his desire to get back with his ex-wife was motivated more by hurt pride than anything else, so the idea that it was finding the right person that made the difference made sense.  I liked that he wasn’t freaked out or in denial about his attraction to Matt, or interested in labels -

“I don’t know whether I’ve just discovered that I’m gay so much or just that I’ve discovered you… You’re my person and I think that I was just waiting for you. Man or woman, it doesn’t matter to me. The only thing that matters is that you are mine and I am yours.”

Also important in the story is the setting, which is described so vividly that I was able to picture it – the villa in the hills above Cannes with the amazing view of the sea – and imagine the heady scents of the flowers and herbs; the perfect backdrop to allow this intense, sexy romance to develop in that space out of time away from the constraints of everyday life. But there were a few things that kept this book from DIK status.  The aforementioned evil exes were a bit OTT, and sometimes, the dialogue between Matt and John is a bit too-good-to-be-true and overly sappy.  I also wasn’t wild about the continual use of “Matty” and “Johnny”, which felt a bit juvenile.  I know they were meant to be pet names, but I still found it a bit irritating.

Otherwise, though, The Summer of Us is a funny, charming, sexy and wonderfully romantic read and I enjoyed it a lot in spite of its flaws.

So considering this was the authors first MM book, I actually read it last. I'm also suprised these are mentioned as favourite characters who cameo a lot in the other books.

I've just binged pretty much every Lily Morton book in around a week, but other than a very brief mention of (I'm assuming) the same Matt in Asa and Jude’s book, and a mention in Simeon and Ziggy's short in Short Stack 2, I can't recall seeing these characters anywhere else?!

They were cute but didn't have the same big personalities I expect from a book in this authors universe. I'm actually glad I started with Dylan and Gabe otherwise I might not have then found so many characters I love!

I am really enjoying all of Lily Morton's M/M books and this one was also very enjoyable. It's an enemies to lovers story or if not enemies at least two guys who don't like each other much. However, there is a little bit of an attraction as well. However, once they end up living together for a little while they get to know each other and find out they really like each other. Of course there is a bit of drama towards the end to keep it interesting. Two great guys spending their summer "vacation" in a beautiful location.

I absolutely loved this.

Matt and John were funny, witty, open and just perfect for each other. They complemented each other and reading about their progress from friends, to lovers and then to partners was just a joy. It also didn’t hurt that the UST between them for most of the book was written perfectly. When they finally came together too, Wowza! I damn near swooned. *happy sigh*

Lily Morton’s writing here reminded me of why I love British humour so much. It always has a kick that leaves me laughing longer.

Also, the writing flowed very smoothly without any unnecessary drama despite all the times it could’ve taken that route. ALL the secondary characters introduced (love them or hate them) were well fleshed out and the entire body of work felt like a perfect whole & not fractions of different themes like some books tend to be.

Would I be reading more Lily Morton? Absolutely. Anyone who can make me laugh while making me feel all the feels deserves my money!

I really, really liked this story. it was great to read about someone who discovers a great person and falls in love with him without throwing a tantrum because the gender is different than he expected

John and Matt are great together and there is great chemistry
both characters are vulnerable and have their faults and I love them for that.

can't wait to read another story by Lily Morton
