Reason and Society in the Middle Ages

Rate this book
The Middle Ages are remembered as an age of faith; but they were also an age of reason. This book concentrates on the 250 years between the late 11th and early 14th centuries and studies two key facets of the rationalistic mathematics, and the broader current represented by a
literary education. The final section considers ascetic monasticism, a notably non-rationalistic tradition.

A highly schizophrenic book, a real variety of topics which at best bump you towards the overall argument. Each individual topic is great however, treat the contents page as a Fleischplatte and little can go wrong. I didn't really bother with the fourth section 'nobility and religion', it seemed to be wholly tangential (the other three sections form 2-3 separate arguments in any case).
