Enemy or Lover?

As a supporter of the late king, Richard III, Lady Philippa's father is a wanted man, a traitor to the crown. While visiting her dying grandfather in Wales, she fears for her life when she is recognized—by Sir Rhys Griffith, a knight and supporter of the present king.

Lady Philippa knows that at any moment Sir Rhys could have her father arrested and thrown in the Tower for treason. Yet he seems a man of honor, a man who has appointed himself her protector. Could it be he seeks her father for quite a different reason—to ask for her hand in marriage?

Also writes under the pseudonyms Margaret Abbey and Elizabeth York.

Joanna was born in a Leicester of working class parents who were keenly intelligent and supportive and loving throughout her childhood. Unfortunately, she was born with a dislocation of the hip joint, which meant she spent a great deal of early childhood in and out of hospitals. However, they did have a hospital school and she learned to read early, so that she was devouring Dickens, Dumas, and Sabatini at seven and attempting to scribble stories (novels even) at about 11 years old.

This was a good read with lots of interesting historical detail and illustrates the dangers of living in those times when human destiny was dictated very much by whoever wielded the power. Loyalties could put you in grave danger, once the seat of power changed.
This is very much the construct of this story. Lady Phillipa's father was loyal to the old King Richard and is now deemed a traitor by the new King Henry Tudor. Forced to live in exile in Burgandy with her parents, Phillipa and her mother make a dangerous trip back to visit her ailing Grandfather in the Welsh borders. Assaulted on her very first night in England, Phillipa is rescued by a knight of King Henry, Sir Rhys Griffith. He insists on escorting her and her mother to their destination and thus the relationship begins.
I felt the romance was secondary to the characters and events happening around and to the characters and that is my reason for the 3 rather than 4 stars. But otherwise an engaging read.
