I had an idea of how this would play out, but it didn’t end that way. And I wish it had. The ending was very overcomplicated and sort of went off the rails. I didn’t care for it much. I really wish I could get more detailed and specific, but I’d be ruining things. The rest of the story was done well and made the most of it’s revenge/home invasion/torture type of premise. I’ve read much nastier books like this, but this didn’t lean too heavily into the gore factor. Still plenty of very violent acts, but nothing that tested the splatterpunk boundaries. The perpetrators were fine and had enough depth and logic to make their actions sensible. Noah was very flat in certain spots, especially when the stakes were high. For instance, Izzy, his baby daughter, was tossed out a window (Plenty more with her, so promise it’s not a spoiler.) and he didn’t seem to react much to it. I also really wished that he had a better conclusion, and the opposite for Aubrey. I didn’t care for her all that much and her ultimate resolution didn’t feel like it was totally appropriate. The last interaction with Verity was really far-fetched, too. So, not without it’s minor issues, this was a decent nailbiter with a not so great ending.
