Jack's Planet is the third book in the Jack Foster Space Opera series. The first two books both took off like rockets - rewarding when you're writing Space Opera.
Jack has undertaken to return rescued Tirarge, a hitherto unknown species, to their home planet. The first problem? The Tirarge cannot speak - they're telepathic. The second problem? They don't know where their home system is located. The third problem? Another starship is following Fearless, likely seeking revenge.
Oh wait, there's another problem. Two other species also inhabit this unknown planet, and they can't speak, either.
Surprisingly, that's not the end of Jack's problems.
Jack, while sympathetic to the issues facing the planet and its people, has no standing apart from Fearless and his three bots and the Eagles and the SAC scouts and a squad of Black Company marines and a warrior squad of Tirarge and an AI or two...
The rulers of the planet, ignoring civilized conventions, have a simple yet elegant solution. They re-name their world and nominate Jack as its new owner. They engrave the title to the planet on a massive diamond, a jewel worth more than Jack can ever dream of. The new name of this world?
Jack Foster's Planet
There are enemies on their way, possibly a GalFed destroyer or two, and a planet to protect. Join Jack and his team - ever increasing - in their venture to help their new friends against slave traders, and Jack's Planet against illegal mining.
Jack Foster seems to always find himself in danger and the people around him. But he has also got good friends to help. Looking forward to reading more.
Mistakes: This felt rushed to me. I've listed the mistakes I found on Goodreads.
Plot: Hey let's just hand over the protection of our entire planet to one person and one ship. After all we scanned his mind and he is sweet and honest. It is really hard to suspend belief for this book.
Characters: Conversation can come across as to naive at times. A few characters do die, but everyone else is tripping over themselves to be lovey dovey. Oh and we have now made the MC such a powerful telepath that he can stun people in space on their ship.
3/10 Really what is the point? There is no challenge and the MC is perfect.
A space opera with corrupt navel personnel and mega corporations should be exciting, but . . .
Add in a pacifist main character that refuses to deal with traitors, over and over and over again, and you have a boring, predictable mess. Also the main character has moved from a "Tony Stark" to a "God" build. It has passed all measure of incredulity. All the events are the same repeated ad nauseam. This series had a solid start, I do not know what the author was thinking that this is where it ended up at.
l just read the 3rd installment of Jack Foster. It was quite enjoyable, especially the elements ofJack’s progression (book 1). He went from superior student to teacher, super athletic - computer whiz, to McGuyver (on the shipwreck). Loved his Sherlock Holmes-like observation skills and the way he dealt with people from the pranksters that became his posse, to the smugglers to people in authority…. both competent and incompetent.
Really love the evolution of technology possibilities from printing everyday items, to personal surveillance and protection tech; to the evolution of banking and law. Jack also demonstrated an understanding of the media, and what levers to pull to make his case in the court of public opinion. Classic!
Sofia has family issues to resolve, she and and Jack went through a lot; from accelerated studies, assassination attempts, to being shipwrecked then attacked and losing their fetus. Then she’s kidnapped and Jack and co. rescued her. After all this, they appear to be breaking up, yet Sofia is definitely going to need Jacks help when mom and her minions, or others of their ilk come calling.
I suppose I have become emotionally invested in Sofie’s character because of all they’ve been through together. After all, relationships are life!
Seemingly out of character for Jack, Jenny comes back into his orbit and its “love the one you are with”. Cant say l blame them but Sofie just feels like unfinished business. Then Jack and Jenny become telepathically bonded so theirs will be a long term relationship. What will the Jack/Sofia-ship morph into? Can’t wait to find out.
The concept of 4 sentient species on Jack’s World and how awesome their manipulation of natural forces and telepathy can be is extremely creative. All told, l am really enjoying this series and look forward to more adventures of a very interesting MC (who doesnt seem to have hubris despite his talents and accomplishments) and the world building of the universe that he’s upheaving.
The review covers all three books culminating in "Jack's Planet". One never reads books wherein the hero always wins on his first try., meets little or no unfair resistance and is so well treated by all. Hence the proposed movie title above. While this approach demands almost total suspension of disbelief it is very refreshing to be spared the constant frustration of made up obstacles found in most novels. Your patience might be tested by some laborious descriptions of technical activities like the shut down of the nuclear generators and batteries, but as a rule this is a fast read and very enjoyable. I look forward to more of Jack's adventures and more of this author's books.
First off, that cliffhanger was quite uncalled for.
The story continues to interest me, the resolution(ish) of the relationship situation was good, but there are structural elements which keep this in the 4 range. Jack continues to half-ass it with people who are trying to kill him and I find that irksome. Fortunately there are others with more sense, but still.
Yes, I will read the next one, as flaws and all I am now invested in the series and feel that it has some interesting ideas left in it. Jack's gotta build his own navy and secure the star system toute suite, as there is no viable alternative if he wants to protect his planet. Really, those aliens did a masterful job of outsourcing their security...
Sigh. If it weren't for the fact of the cliffhanger ending, I would give this a higher rating. Unfortunately, the ending is so badly written, it totally negates the previous entertaining story telling. I don't know if I will continue reading this series or not. Someone with extremely poor judgement either encouraged the cheap ending or a extremely ineffective editor allowed it to be included. Science fiction readers are intelligent, loyal, and like a good story. This was insulting and unnecessary
I read the first few chapters and I began to wonder if the author had forgotten what he was doing. So many things were just left and then ignored, did the author lose his notes and just scribbled down anything he could make up on the spur of the moment? In fact throughout the book several things just happen and when you go deeper they don’t really make a lot of sense.
Fortunately the occupation of the mining camp and the fallout were more interesting and I was beginning to feel more generous until the author again came up with a rubbish ending.
the first couple books were alright. not this one.
So if you want some interesting worlds for an opera this is all right. But it’s just bad soap opera going into the end of book 2. Book 3 is a joke and I quit 25% into it. No character development at all. No consistency or logic with the technology. I mean, one guy spends a couple extra hours in the doc box and now all the marines think he’s hot stuff. HELLO! A couple hours! Shoot run the whole battalion through it. Sorry this is Hanna Barbara’s Richie Rich in space. Just go read Glynn Stewart instead.
While much of the science is magical sci-fi, the storyline and character development are well written and create another good installment in this series. An overall simple theme, where the good guys win and right prevails, keeps the storyline light even with frequent conflicts and battles. Some story threads are resolved, some persist and at least one leads the reader into the next book.
would’ve given it a five but don’t like cereals or cliffhangers.
Love the characters, Love the action, enjoy the story development. I would really like to give this book a five because Jack has the goods to get things done. He’s not hobbled by guilt injury, broken equipment, beat up spaceships. He just goes ahead and does what he hast to do. The only thing I don’t like a cliffhangers . If you don’t mind them read this book it is excellent.
the book is well written fast paced , Jack is an exciting hero that doesn't sit aroubd poundering what is the right thing ti do he always does the right thing for himself and his frienfs and family: However the book ends with a sickly cliff hanger and the author seems proud of himself for ruining an entertaining book book by lettin the reader know he doesn't care about the consumer of his work !Maybe his muse should hit him up thside of his head or move on to a better author
This is a series that defines escapism at its finest. Fast paced. Lots of action. Characters you can enjoy. Yet Hindmarsh adds situations and hard choices that are relatable. Boy and girl sometimes have to make decisions that lead them down different life paths. It's a real thing. So! Escapism. Action. Interesting characters. And real life decions to keep you grounded. I hope he keeps writing until he's 183!
For some absurd reason, the author has decided to serialise what could otherwise be a good yarn…. The fact that he throws in cliffhangers at the end of each book is disappointing and frustrating, unless the series comes to a rapid conclusion… If the author reads this review then please note a good conclusion to each book with hints about the next would be much more satisfying…
Another cracking story from John. How will Jack and Jenny cope with owning a wee Planet and all its inhabitants will I am sure be continued in further books. His defence will be interesting, especially when the other side don't play by the same rules? As usual it's waiting time for the next book!! Must read in rotation to understand what the books are about.
I read this book first without having read the others. It was hard to understand the main characters and their previous interaction and after a while I gave up. This a boys own story completely unrealistic even for a sci fi novel but I read it to the end. However that being said I don’t expect I’ll read another in the series.
John Homemade is an awesome storyteller and created a series that has captured me. The characters are strong and well developed, easy to identify with. The action and adventure is fast-paced, taking your breath away. I really like this book and I highly recommend it.
Jack, Jenny and the crew are beginning to discover that they have more work than they realized as they cope with the initial problems of not only cleaning up after the strip mining but also the defense of the planet. Note that the book ends abruptly in the middle of events in basic serial fashion.
Jack just keeps getting into trouble, or trouble keeps finding him Everytime something looks to be bad, he comes out of it better off than he was before All the team are still there and it seems to be growing, people just want to work with Jack, even if it means putting themselves in danger
Big fat boo-boo! When the son of the CEO of the mining company is first mentioned he’s the “3rd”. Shortly after this he’s called the “4th”.
I’m enjoying this series but a good editor should have caught this and fixed it before I found it. I hate checking earlier in the story to see if I’m right or wrong.
This is an excellent sequel.Good strong characters, concepts easy to understand, explanations that make all clear.I m enjoying this series and look forward to subsequent issues.
Good story and very well edited! I enjoyed the overpowered main character who can do virtually no wrong. 😎 No graphic violence and no descriptive sex, but a touch of romance. 😱😍 And - No hard science fiction either.🙊🚀
Simple, quite entertaining, old fashioned space opera. Good guys - humanoid and AI - as well as bad guys, space ships, explosions, alien life forms, planets inhabited by intelligent life and all at warp speed.
Not badly written. I have read the three books expecting an end - but yet another cliff hanger, I so dislike endings that are not endings, they are a cheat. A book or at least a series should have an end. I doubt that I will spend more money on this author.
John always provides a fun read. Some is unrealistic, some is preposterous, but it’s always a fun read. Highly recommended for those who enjoy escape to a fun & a bit different space opera. Readers from 12 to 25 will especially enjoy it.
An overwhelming god character who casually knocks off achievements that would take others years or lifetimes to accomplish. Very lacking in descriptive details, it takes 3 books before we even find out one of the characters has blue eyes.
The inhabits of Jack's Planet were interesting to meet. The transition from Jack's relationship with Sofia to his relationship with Jenny was very thin. The story remains an engaging one.
