Pediatrician Dr. Betty Choi invites kids ages 8 and up to explore the marvels of the human body with lively hands-on projects and activities, including shaping bones from salt dough, creating a moving model of the eyes, crafting a 3d skin model, making a blow-up model of how a bicep muscle contracts, tracing capillary action, and even setting up a working model of the urinary system to show how pee is produced.
Packed with colorful diagrams of how each major body system works, fun facts, and easy tests that kids can use to learn about and evaluate their own body functions—from touch sensitivity to colorblindness, taste perception, lung capacity and more— The Human Body Learning Lab makes biology more exciting and engaging than ever.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Human body Learning Lab is a great book to share with children to learn about the human body. This book is jam packed full of interesting information, facts and fun experiments to carry out. I loved the diversity of this book and found it covered all bodily parts and functions in a fun and interesting way. Children love learning about how their body works and this book certainly won't disappoint. I can't wait to try out all the experiments in this book nor only with my class bit with my own child too. Science is such a fun topic in school and this is a great, interesting book to get children interested and aware of their body and how unique and important it is. Definitely a book to get for a classroom or even at home for fun!
Currently going through this with the kids...Great mix of facts, drawings, photos and activities to keep the interest high. Lots of diversity with the people in the pictures.. The kids like to flip through the different organ systems and quiz dad on the facts they learned. Favorite projects so far: making bones, reaction time ruler catching game, poop diary, and capillary action. I received an advanced copy from the publisher and author...All opinions are my own.
I thought this book is great for older elementary and younger middle schoolers. It provides age appropriate information about human bodies and prompts questions from kids that lead to educational conversations. Highly recommend!
This book has a lot of good information, photos, illustrations, and hands on activities to learn about the human body. It would go great with a human body unit study. We added it to our human body unit study from our homeschool curriculum.
A great introduction to the human body for elementary age children. There is some advanced information included (eg cell structure with ER and microtubules) but also has alot of interesting hands-on activities that I can imagine the younger siblings would join in too! My favourite part is the "Checkup with Dr Choi" feature where Dr Choi tells the readers how to take care of their bodies. Dr Choi, being a PD, has also included sections on common issues like Asthma, Myopia, Bone Fractures that would help answer the children's questions about their health. Would definitely get a hard copy for my homeschool library so that my children get to browse through the many great illustrations and diagrams!
I have received a digital advance reader copy from the publisher for my honest review of this book.
This was a fun introduction to body science. I liked the diversity of the book and building the models was fun. I tried to build them with a 6-year-old but they required a fair amount of help. I'm sure a 9-year-old would already be more capable of making the models independently. But this way we spend more time together and were able to name things along the way. The pictures were just simple enough to understand on a manageable level but not too abstract to be inaccurate. Overall, a great book to learn about human biology together.
This book proves that science doesn't have to be boring. Human Body Learning Lab is a kid-friendly book with full-color illustrations, easy-to-understand explanations, and fun projects to keep kids engaged and interested in anatomy. It would be the perfect addition to any child's bookshelf in addition to classrooms and libraries.
Super fun way to explore human anatomy and physiology through crafts and activities— great for homeschooling adjunct for 9 yo — hands on kid friendly projects with mostly stuff we already had laying around the house! Colorful illustrations. Inclusive themes - including how hearing aides work/look like.
2.5 Stars... This book feels very unfinished. It also seems all over the place as far its audience. What age is this book targeting? As someone who has taught school to kids ages 4 to 11, I had to wonder. The language seems geared more towards older kids, the art to younger kids, the experiments to kids around grades 2-3. In addition, it addresses topics, such as puberty, that are not taught to the young ones. Senses, yes. Parts of the body, yes. Systems, DNA, reproduction, not until they are older. The computer-rendered illustrations are also quite amateurish. I respect the intent of the book, but who is it for? Kids and their parents? Or teachers and their students? I think it is trying to do too much within one volume.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
I received an advanced copy of this book for my honest review. This book provides a wonderful, engaging peek into the amazing human body. There were several chapters that my 6 year old gravitated toward based on pictures or her own curiosity, including the gastrointestinal chapter and immune system (germs!). I can see this as a book we are able to enjoy now even for my early elementary school-aged daughter, and she has already asked to try some of the projects. Furthermore, I can definitely see this as a book we will continue to revisit in the future as her interest grows or deepens. As a pediatrician, this book also speaks to me on another level. I find the projects illuminating and creative and makes me excited to have this tool to share my work with my children. I think my daughter has a new appreciation for the knowledge that doctors have in order to do their job well. Moreover, several family members who are in childhood education, I can't wait to share this book with them!
I was excited to review this book. It’s a book I would have loved having growing up. Not only does it have beautiful images and illustrations of the human body, it was easy to understand explanations, and fun experiment ideas to do with your kids. My daughter loves it, and I started with my younger ones that are finding it interesting and attractive.
Thanks to the authors for my complimentary e-arc. All opinions are my own.
Great kids nonfiction about the human body. I learned things! Love the inclusion of hands-on projects that can help kids make connections with the content. Good mix of illustrations and photos of a skin-tone-diverse group of kids. Wish there had been more body types and visible disability in the examples. Appreciated that it's written by a Doctor and parent. She talks about testing the projects with her kids during the pandemic lockdowns.
I was so excited to review a copy of this book as a pediatrician. It is so thoughtful and a happy interactive way for children to learn about the body. I can’t wait to give it as gifts for all the 4.5-10 year olds on my list this Christmas. Parents will enjoy doing the activities with their kids.
This book has great information and activities for kids to learn about human anatomy. I love the graphic and simple explanation of each part of the body. Also, it is a kids friendly book that kids can do fun activities after each topic. My 8, 12 and 14 years old kids are enjoying this book! If you are looking for a human anatomy book for your kiddos, this book is your choice.
Very well written and creative. My children love doing activities in this book and as a bonus they learn something. I enjoy doing the activities with them. Highly recommend!
I love this book as it provides an accurate description of what happens in the body, using proper medical term, but also explains the terms and simplifies concepts so that children can understand them. The activities that accompany each chapter are also fun and help to strengthen the concepts covered in that chapter.
Human Body Learning Lab is a book that parents will not just read to their kids but an adventure they can explore with their kids.
Dr. Choi has produced an easy-to-understand, biologically accurate, visually appealing guide to the human body. From the colorful table of contents to the ending invitation to Learn More at the website, Dr. Choi covers the human body from head to toe, and from inside out.
The Learning Lab explains in text and colorful, detailed, clearly labeled drawings the structure and function of the body’s organ systems. The author also explains genetics, DNA, the five senses, and the immune system.
A special offering in this book is the hands-on activities that help kids understand what they’ve read. Using two plastic bottles and flexible straws, a funnel, and an assortment of craft supplies, kids can make a model illustrating the kidneys. In a two-child activity, working together, they learn how to identify unknown foods by taste and smell. Multiple others are available and are equally clever, educational, and fun.
Although this is a “children’s” book, adults can enjoy it too. Even if you don’t have kids to read it with. If you are an adult who is clueless about the inner workings of the body, go ahead and read it by yourself. It is fun, and you may just learn something.
Dr. Choi is a pediatrician, a mom, and founder of Human Body Learning and Chalk Academy. Parents can thank Dr. Choi for using her professional and personal background to offer a unique valuable resource for their children.
This is an excellent book that teaches kids for many ages about the body. I will admit as a pediatrician I am very picky with body/medicine books since many are very basic and not much info or the science books that are good for a certain age but after awhile phase out. I have a 6.5 and 3.5 yr old and you can adjust the learning as is suitable for the age. I feel it’s also adaptable to older kids as well- perfect for science fairs! I know I will be using this book for many years to come!
