This set of 12 simple and fun Biscuit storybooks is an excellent choice to share at home or in the preschool or kindergarten classroom. It’s a fun way to learn to read and as a supplement for activity books for children ages 3 to 6. Enter into the world of reading with I Can Read Phonics! Biscuit is everyone's favorite little yellow puppy, and this 12-book box set is a helpful teaching tool for emergent readers. Based on the latest research about how children learn to read, these twelve full-color books feature repeated examples of short vowel sounds and common sight words. The simple stories about everyone's favorite little yellow puppy will make the process of learning to read fun. Phonics teaches children the relationship between letters and the sounds they make. A child who has mastered these relationships has an excellent foundation for learning to read and spell. According to the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, a child who has learned phonics has a method to recognize familiar words and “decode” unfamiliar ones.
Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
This is a set of 12 books that teach short vowel sounds and common sight words.

As I have said before, teaching a child to read is a long term project and I love the idea of little phonics readers like the Bob Books so it excites me that the HarperCollins I Can Read! series is coming out with Phonics Fun packages that are little boxes full of phonics readers. While these are the same size and similar looking to Bob Books these are not the same and not a replacement, however I think they can be a fun add on and reinforcement. Using subjects that the early reader is familiar with can make this activity all the more fun.
These are so far the best beginning readers in the Phonics Fun choices that I have seen so far. Much like the wonderful early readers that feature our beloved Biscuit these little readers are short and sweet with simple sentences and small words. We are delighted to take these off the shelf and read them after finishing a phonics lesson or moving on from a Bob Book choice. I cannot wait for the second set, Biscuit Phonics Fun #2 to be released! Also look out for the sets featuring Little Critter Phonics Fun as well.
*Thanks to HarperCollins for providing a copy for review.*
Great phonics series. Each book focuses on a sound like "short u". Simple sentences with emphasis on a particular sound. Also, a focus on some sight words. Kids love Biscuit books so this simple series will be great for beginning readers because of the way it is written but also because kids will respond to the character.
This is a perfect set of books for the up and coming reader. Biscuit makes reading a terrific adventure. With buiscuit, even sounding out words can be fun!!
