With wry humor and a journalist's eye for fascinating details, O'Donoghue tells of his wild run in the 1998 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, a 1000-mile run from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, to Fairbanks, Alaska.
I love dog sled race books. All the different perspectives, all the challenges, all the terrific dogs. Great details in this book. I especially like the great details of the dogs.
Not my favorite dog sled race book, but like different dogs have their own personalities, different very good dog sledding books have different things to appreciate. Brian's dogs aren't the fastest, and his leaders sometimes quit, or go off in different directions, but he kept them through to finish the race. You want to applaud everyone who sets out.
I liked the way this book kept a handle on the races at the front, a pack toward the back, and the two at the end of the line. I don't remember any of my other similar books have handled 3 threads like that as well.
Very good book that I would recommend. Now I gotta get his other books :-)
Overcoming obstacles in a 1,00 mile sled dog race "The Quest" Fascinating account of reading dogs, weather, terrain, competitors and oneself all in the quest of prize or at least finishing.
My mother-in-law bought me this book when she was in Alaska. It was an excellent account of what it is like to participate in a long distance dog sled race. I went dog sledding once and can appreciate how difficult this event must be.
