Cabin Tripping: Where to Go to Get Away from It All

Rate this book
A mountain lodge 5,000 feet up in Washington State’s Cascades mountains, accessible only by skis—or an SUV tricked out with bulldozer-size snow tires. A sleek cabin just 80 minutes from Manhattan, overlooking the property’s pond and 19 acres of woodland. A romantic, eco-friendly escape in the misty mountains of Bali’s Gunung Agung volcano. A glass-domed Finnish hut offering unobstructed views of the Northern Lights. Whether readers are seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure or a quiet retreat, a cozy night around a firepit or a summery lakefront sojourn, Cabin Tripping delivers.   Divided into six chapters—Forest, Tropics, Mountain, Arctic, Water, and Desert—the book features a curated collection of over 80 of the most incredible cabins available to rent all over the globe. Each cabin profile includes information on how to get there, activities to enjoy in the area (hiking trails, fishing holes, thermal spas, and more), and tips like when to plan your visit to maximize your “leaf-peeping” or whale-watching opportunities.

"A cabin in the woods is more than a shelter. It's a sanctuary from the stress of modern life. It's a call to nature." (p. 11)

Cabin Tripping is a fun reference book, referring to 79 cabins across the world that can be rented. JJ Eggers published the book as an extension of his Instagram account, with Alexis Lipsitz doing most of the actual writing. It's filled with pretty pictures of cabins that are notable for their funky architecture and beautiful natural surroundings. I do have to admit that most of the locations are outside the budget of the average person, though. I doubt it is a coincidence that the authors did not provide the rental prices in the chapters, leaving contact information and website links in the back of the book. That diminishes the value of Cabin Tripping to more of a curiosity than a practical reference book.

Every cabin did not have interior photos and they really all should have. The author's wanna be cheeky description of furniture and the landscape didn't add much without pictures of the inside of the cabin! But when there were pictures I found them enjoyable. I would recommend if you are looking for a different source of getaway inspo (not IG), since you can just look up the cabins online (and there's a directory at the end).

This book is not only visually stunning but includes detailed descriptions of the cabins and area WITH information on how to book them to stay in! Not all are bookable but many are! And to top it off it’s the perfect “mini” coffee table book to decorate with at about 5”x7”!

Pictures of cabins around the world but without details or info. This book is a vibe and that's all.

This book is definitely more for looking than reading in my case. It's technically a "Did Not Finish" for me, simply because the text didn't feel interesting to me. I'm not super outdoorsy and don't currently have the disposable income to venture off for reading retreats every weekend (the dream!), so I wasn't compelled to complete the book. I did flip through for the photos, however, and was not disappointed! Very beautiful and would make an excellent gift for the outdoor enthusiast in your life.
