Inspired by the author's own childhood adventures, this heartfelt story will take readers on a whimsical journey through Ellery's childhood with her magical bicycle in tow. Ellery and her bicycle share many wonderful new adventures together; lonely yet curious Ellery finds adventure, love, and friendship, as well as weathering sorrow and loss.
When she grows up, Ellery starts to forget her special bond with the bicycle. Will Ellery remember what's important before it's too late and the magical bicycle is lost forever?
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Ellerys Magic Bicycle is an heartwarming story about Ellery who finds an old abandoned bicycle and takes it home. Ellery and the bike are inseparable and grow together until Ellery makes her own family. The bicycle is put away and forgotten about until one day years later when Elkery is tasked with the choice to give the bike away or keep it. This book was such a wonderful read and really got to my heartstrings. This reminds me so much of my childhood where I would go off for the day on my own beloved bike on many adventures. The illustrations are lovely and I loved the ending.
Lovely story about Ellery and the bicycle she finds as a child and which accompanies her through her life - magically growing. It plays with her, teaches her, protects, helps and comforts. But what will happen when Ellery is grown up? I liked the beautiful drawings and the simple sentences, though I think the small parts of the story could demand a little more extension. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Suddenly, it sprung up and---thwack!---shook off the mud, dints, and rust.
The bicycle circled Ellery who spun around, chasing it with excitement and wonder."
Ellery finds a magical purple bicycle and it becomes her companion on many adventures. For a time, she forgets the bicycle and the bicycle is sad, but then, to her joy, she is reunited with the bike later in life.
There's something life-affirming, something heartening, joyful, about the illustrations and the story of Ellery's Magic Bicycle. You can't help but adore this purple bicycle that grows with its beloved owner and chooses her companions for her and shares delightful romps with her.
If you’ve every read “The Giving Tree”, by Shel Silverstein, you will have the general plot of “Ellery’s Magic Bicycle. An young, lonely girl finds a bike that turns out to have a bit of magic. She’s very young when the story begins, maybe 5-6 years old.
As the story progresses, the little girl grows and so does the bicycle. Their adventures get more mature, another character joins the story and life continues until she heads off to college and the bike is left alone in the garage.
Time passes, the girl is now married with an husband and baby girl of her own. Will the bicycle find new purpose or give way to contemporary technology?
Pastoral illustrations in soft colors with minimal text, (unlike the comparison story), makes this a good choice for 6-8 year olds. Topics include: kindness, friendship, bad vs. good choices, being sad or lonely, and others. A good choice for reading along with your young reader and sparking conversations📚

About a friendship, love, loss and magic
"Ellery's Magic Bicycle" is a lovely adventure tale. Ellery experienced many great adventures with her bicycle. They celebrate friendship together but also mourn losses together. With Ellery, the wheel also grows. Ellery becomes an adult. Then she gradually forgets about her bike. Until she stops using it. Will Ellery remember the wheel in time before it loses its magic?
Beautiful, colourful illustrations are included in the book. These always create, e.g., different seasons and natural scenes, in addition to Ellery's growing up. The story is beautifully told. She has a strong bond with her bike, with which she has many adventures. Aside from that, it's about true friendship, loss, and love. And then there's the magic.
The book cover caught my eye on Netgalley but I didn't immediately request it due to my overflowing shelves, so I knew it was a sign when I was sent a widget.
This is a simple but charming and uplifting read about Ellery, whose most trusty companion over the years is her magic bicycle. But as the years pass by and she grows up, the less time she spends on her bike.
I thought the prose was just okay. The story felt disjointed at some parts, almost like it could do with an extra page or two in between some scenes. However, I loved the themes of friendship as well as the gorgeous illustrations and soft colour palette.
I also find myself thinking about what I might have neglected and forgotten over the years. This is a very nostalgic read that many will appreciate.
Thank you BooksGoSocial and Netgalley for an ARC of this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I read this with my daughter, and we absolutely loved it! It was poignant and will make you think about it even after you read it.
Ahhhh! This is the magic of picture books. Even though I'm an adult now, it still had a large impact on me. And to think that it was only a few pages!
It rings true in that sometimes when we grow up, we no longer have that much time with our friends and the things we used to love to do because we have responsibilities and tasks to do that take up much of our time.
The illustrations are beautiful and soft and kept the same tone as the story.
The story kind of reminded us of The Giving Tree in a way.
Highly recommend this to children and adults! Definitely tugged at my heartstrings!
I was drawn to this book based on the title of the story and the beautiful cover illustration. It is a simple story about a young girl who finds a magical bicycle. The bicycle becomes her friend and it stays with her through the good and bad as she grows up. I enjoyed the simplicity of the story yet wish there was more of a transition between Ellery getting older and then suddenly being married with a child. Maybe the bike could move with her to her new house and then be happy to have them all together again, before the page where the baby arrives?
The magic of the bicycle is very simple and lends to the personification of the bike. It also allows for a good classroom conversation about identifying the elements of the story that show that the bike is magic. This story could also be used in a lower elementary classroom as the lead in to a creative writing assignment. Students could write about things they would do if they had a magic bike or other magical inanimate object.
The illustrations were beautifully done and complimented the story perfectly.
Thank you to #NetGalley and to #MariaMonte for an ARC of her book #Ellery’sMagicBicycle . The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. 3.5 stars, rounded to 4
Ellery's Magic Bicycle by Maria Monte and illustrated by Zoe Saunders is a beautiful children's book.
The story is about Ellery who discovers a bicycle. But not just any bicycle. It's a magic bicycle. Ellery begins to play with the bicycle every day. In a way, the bicycle becomes her best friend.
But when she grows old, they drift apart. But will Ellery find and remember the great times she's had with her magic bicycle? Will grown-up Ellery rekindle that friendship?
Check out Ellery's Magic Bicycle to find out.
And whether you're reading Ellery's Magic Bicycle to family or children at a nursery, I'm sure children will love the beautiful and colorful illustrations by Zoe Saunders. I'm over 30 and I loved them too!
Kudos to author and artist for this lovely and quick read.
Note: I got a free Advanced Reader's Copy (ARC) of Ellery's Magic Bicycle from its author Maria Monte via NetGalley. This did not impact my review in any way.
Ellery finds a purple bicycle which turns out to be a magic bicycle. The bicycle becomes her companion, but as she grows older she forgets about the bicycle but she is reunited with it later in life. This is a joyful book with wonderful illustrations. Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for this read.
This is a sweet, sad story about a girl who finds a purple bike. Ellery takes her bike everywhere she goes and they have the best adventures. Turns out her bike is magical too! But as Ellery grows older, she no longer needs her bike and so it sits in the garage. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a gifted copy.
Ellery’s Magic Bicycle by Maria Monte and illustrated by Zoe Saunders is a beautiful story of a girl and her bond with her bicycle. If you are looking for a short graphic story to tell your kids, then this book serves the purpose. I have a 5 year old boy and, I am definitely going to read this one out.
The book, definitely, deserves 5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.
This is a beautifully illustrated and magical children's book about a little girl called Ellery who finds a magic bicycle, and as she grows up, the bicycle continues to play with her.
My daughter and I loved this book, which is so sweet and cute. The story is just perfect, adorable and heartwarming, and it will help lots of little children's hearts to glow.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

When I got the mail from the author if I was interested in reading her new book I was hyped! Of course, yes! I would love to read your newest book! I really enjoyed Evie’s Ducklings and I was eager to see what new story she had written.
In this cute book we meet a girl named Ellery! One day while walking around she finds a purple bicycle. All old and rusted! But then, BOOM, SHIMMY, SPARKLE, the bike is all good again and Ellery takes it home with her! I just loved how she took it home and how they had a bond! Yes, that sounds weird, but really, read the book. You will see it too! I loved that it learned her to cycle. And it was indeed quite a magical bike given what happened later on! I loved that her bike was always there for her. For sad moments and happy moments.
And then a new kid appears in Ellery’s street. I wasn’t too happy with those pages, not a fan of throwing pebbles and then retaliating with mud pies. Thankfully, with the help of the bike, something happy happened between them! And that made me smile!
However from then things go a bit fast for me. Did I miss some pages because of what I talk about in the paragraph below? Or did it really just hop step to years later? At times it felt a bit disjointed. Especially how Ellery apparently never left her parents home? Or did she move back? Plus, I just hadn’t seen her and Charlie in that way, it was sweet, but really I would have liked just a bit more on that front. A few more pages.
Sadly, the epub didn’t really exactly work for me! I could see mostly the top half of the illustrations and I had to stretch out my ADE over my two PC screens to see that. I am not sure what went wrong with the file, but I am going to be re-reading this book when I get the chance. For now I could still get the story (at least most sometimes I just had to guess a bit) and see most of the illustrations so I kept on reading, but I do want to re-read it to get the full experience!
The last pages had me a bit worried! Oh no, she wouldn’t do that, would she? But in the end things go right and I was so happy!
The illustrations are so pretty and I absolutely love the soft colours used~
All in all, I really need to re-read this one when I get the chance. I just feel like I missed out on things due to the broken format of the file, plus, I want to enjoy the book a bit more without the frustration of ADE constantly crashing. I will probably also update my rating then. I am happy that I read it though because despite the file errors this was a magical and delightful book with a dash of magic!
Young Ellery comes across a magical bicycle, one that teaches her to ride and protects her from mean children- all she has to do is ask. Through all their adventures together, they develop a special bond but it's difficult to maintain that as she grows older. So what will happen when Ellery no longer remembers her magical bike?
This is a truly whimsical story of a fun and adventurous little girl that, through its simplicity, cannot help but be endearing. The large and full-page illustrations throughout are bright and clear, especially with the facial expressions. The text is easy-to-read and well-spaced.
It would be ideal as a class read-aloud text or to prompt a unit of work.
The topic and writing style make this ideal for reading to four to seven-year-olds. From the vocabulary used and how much of it is phonetically decodable, a child would be about seven years old to read this independently or with minimal support.
Thanks to books go social and netgalley for the copy to read and review.
To young Ellery’s her bicycle is more than just a bicycle it’s magic and she takes it on many adventures, growing up with it and it magically grows with her. Her bicycle was her comfort and her best friend and they did everything together.
As she grew into an adult and had forgotten all about her bicycle it sat in waiting hoping she would be back one day and the magic of her old best friend can be rekindled.
I loved how sweet this story was, how she formed a deep connection with her bicycle and how magical it all was to her. It had beautiful illustrations and was written so sweetly, telling this wonderfully magic story.
Pass the tissues, I have not cried this hard since reading “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. If I could give this book 10 stars,I would. In my opinion, this should be required reading to all lit students. Maria Monte tells a very short story through very poignant words and Zoe Sanders tells the same story through her amazing artwork. “Suddenly, it sprung up and -thwack- shook off the mud” doesn’t this tell a story through a few words? The picture book follows Ellery through her life journey alongside a magically purple bicycle. In addition, we meet Charlie, a much younger boy, who has darker skin, and they become fast friends. Of course, the bicycle teaches Charlie how to read a bike and the three become friends. Perfect book for any reader, I recommend sitting with a child and reading this book. Thank you Maria Monte, Zoe Sanders, Bonny Books, and NetGalley for the privilege of reading this charming book,
One day Ellery finds a bicycle, and to her wonder this bicycle is magical, it grows with Ellery, and to some point, it gives reason to Ellery life. It is a cute story, perfect for children from early age to kids who are starting to read alone. Has bright colours and nice drawings I highly recommend this story to everyone.
I got a free copy of this ARC through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was such a sweet book! I could definitely see myself reading this to my own children. It’s entertaining for both children and adults and I feel like it can provide a lot of life lessons for younger kids.
The artwork in the book is very detailed and nice to look at. The bright colors will keep kids interested in the story and there are a lot of things to look at on the pictures.
Overall this was a great book and I can see s lot of people enjoying to read!
Childhood bicycles are a vessel of magic, and “Ellery’s Magic Bicycle” spoke to my heart because I, too, had a magic bike. I gave my bike a name, and it became one of my best friends. It took me out on extraordinary adventures; it turned into unicorns and dragons; it let me be brave, competitive and curious.
The story about Ellery finding her magical bike and sharing a life of adventures with it is such a relatable narrative that reminded me so much of my own childhood. I wish every single child could have the experience of a magic bike.
I recommend this book to all children - young and old - and adults who still remember; to see just a glimpse of what is possible and to make their hearts soar with tenderness and excitement.
As this is an ARC, I would like some little things to be reviewed by the editor and author, but the story itself is excellent.
Ellery's Magic Bicycle is a story about growing up and growing with the things we love the most. Through this story we see a young child, Ellery, find a beautiful pink bicycle. She rides this bike all through her childhood and adolescence, when a time comes where the poor bicycle is left to get dusty in the garage. Eventually Ellery returns to it in her older years, unable to part with it..
This was a cute story about something a lot of adults can relate to, and a lot of kids will be experiencing in their own coming of age. I love books like this that show how certain objects don't need to, or deserve to be, "one time use". Some things will last us our whole lives, or most of them at least.
The illustrations were cute, and the text was easy to read. I'd recommend this to anyone with young kids.
*I was given a copy of this title via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Ellery‘s magic bicycle is about the relationship between ellery and her bicycle. The story is told with beautiful images that enhance your reading experience. I wold absolutely recommend this book. Maybe to read together when your kid is learning to ride. Thank you netgally for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review
This book was very reminiscent of the Giving Tree, as it showed a child's growth and how the bicycle grew along with her. There was some sadness, but it was redeemed in the end. Very simple but pretty illustrations. I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.
The book was a poignant story of a girl and her bicycle. This magic bicycle wasn’t ordinary, it had magic powers it would play the games she wanted. It would take her on many travels throughout the countryside. They had a special friendship that allowed for one more, you have to read the rest for yourself. The story moved me to wane nostalgic and made me cry for what was. The book very much parallels my life history. Young children can read and relate to the story and brought a tear for I had a bicycle that I would ride for hours all over our small town. Yes I will be recommending this book and will buy when my granddaughter is older, thanks to #NetGalley,Maria Monte and #Ellery’sMagicBicycle for the opportunity to read early.

Ellery is a little girl who comes across an enchanted purple bicycle. The bicycle grows with her, sprouts a decorated floral basket, and even softens when she needs to lean against it. Ellery is a daredevil with the bike in her teenage years, but eventually she abandons it to the shed as an adult where it collects cobwebs.
This story definitely gave me The Giving Tree vibes. My 4 year old twin girls and I loved how at the end, Ellery gets back on her bike to go on a bike ride with her young daughter.

I really liked this book. It was a simple story of a girl growing up and having an unusual best friend. It was very sweet and super easy to read. Loved the progression of the story as well.
The pictures that went with the book were great and I really liked the soft colors.
Ellery's Magic Bicycle is a cute story geared to 4-7 year old children. I read this book to two children aged four and five. They both loved the idea that the bicycle could grow along with Ellery. One favorite part was when Ellery was grow up and had her own baby. The other one liked that Ellery was still riding the bike as an adult. The book also deals with some serious matters too, such as a friend moving away and older toys being neglected as children grow older. A sweet and happy ending finishes the book off perfectly.
Thanks to netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the arc.
Can a bicycle ever be more than what it appears? One day, a young girl named Ellery is exploring the nearby landscape when she stumbles upon an abandoned purple bicycle. The bicycle unexpectedly communicates with Ellery, and the two invite one another into their lives. Every day, the newfound companions spend time together, teaching one another the importance of friendship and support through their shared experiences. True to the magic within, the bicycle grows and shifts along with Ellery, but when it becomes forgotten in Ellery’s shed, the bicycle wonders whether it will ever again be the friend it once was. Many children believe in the anthropomorphic nature of their prized possessions, whether it is a teddy bear, a blanket, or in this case, a bicycle. Ellery’s story is one that, while requiring a suspension of disbelief in the bicycle’s transformations, lovingly captures the profound love a child can have for a special plaything. Limited text is used to tell Ellery’s story, leaving ample opportunity for discussion and contemplation to fill in what happens as time passes. Cheerful colors adorn the illustrations, which comprise the majority of each page and help connect younger readers to Ellery’s story. Because the narrative stretches over more than one decade of time, the images are often used to depict the changing of seasons or the progression of years. Children and adults alike will appreciate the nostalgic sentiments present in this book, and reading it together will no doubt inspire conversation about treasured keepsakes of one’s own. This is a charming addition to bedtime storytime collections for families with young children.
I received a copy of this book from the author and I chose to leave this review.
We are proud to announce that ELLERY'S MAGIC BICYCLE by Maria Monte has been honored with the B.R.A.G.Medallion (Book Readers Appreciation Group). It now joins the very select award-winning, reader-recommended books at indieBRAG.
