Із тої добірки коміксів Роберта Кіркмана, з якими я познайомився, можу сказати, що він досить хороший майстер підсадити на гачок на початку історії. За кілька випусків відразу ставиш багато питань і виникає велике бажання дізнатися відповіді якнайшвидше. Комікс «Пісня забуття» не порушує це «правило». Перші дві сюжетні арки цієї серії коміксів я ще мав змогу читати в м’яких обкладинках, у кожній із яких містилося по шість випусків. Тепер я перечитую ці випуски в іншому форматі.
Велика частина коміксу розгортається у світі Забуття, який виглядає дуже схожим на той, у якому ми живемо, з однією істотною відмінністю: десять років тому, велику частину Філадельфії було невідомим чином телепортовано у ворожий вимір, наповнений монстрами. Натан Коул розробив технологію, щоби транспортуватися в той вимір та повертати тих, хто потрапив у пастку. Йому потрібне фінансування для продовження своєї місії, але уряд хоче рухатися далі, вважаючи, що спорудження меморіального пам’ятника з іменами зниклих безвісти достатньо. Але ми бачимо, що місія Натана далеко не безкорислива. Навіть попри ризики для його життя в іншому вимірі, де монстри намагаються його вбити на кожному кроці. Його головною метою є знайти свого зниклого брата. Натан досить неоднозначний герой, хоча його серце говорить про добрі наміри. Але він схильний до імпульсивних рішень, які не завжди правильні, і нав’язливого бажання повернутися в інший вимір, навіть якщо ціна відштовхує людей, яких він любить.
Перша арка зосереджена здебільшого на захопливому екшені, знайомством зі світом і досить переконливій драмі. З одного боку ми маємо Натана, який досліджує таємницю ворожого світу із усіма аспектами, які це супроводжують. З іншого — дослідження того, як суспільство реагує на трагедію, яка відбулася десятиліття тому. Головна катастрофа в цій історії фундаментально змінила культурні норми та сприйняття реальності для людей. Посттравматичний стресовий розлад досить поширений, і боротьба за повернення до нормального життя відбувається постійно. Це можна побачити в людях, які повернулися із Забуття, а також у їхніх близьких, які живуть і спілкуються із ними.
Друга ж арка натомість розкриває безліч питань, які виникли в першій. Ми дізнаємося, що за катастрофа трапилася із частиною Філадельфії, як і яким чином до цього причетний Натан і також відкривається доля всіх людей, які опинилися в пастці в Забутті. Але навзамін дістаємо підвищення градусу щодо ситуації із телепортуванням в інший вимір, а конфлікт із державними інституціями набуває критичного рівня. Та найголовніше, наприкінці нам показують сцену, з якої ми розуміємо майбутні великі проблеми героїв та приблизне очікування, куди буде рухатися сюжет. І воно надзвичайно інтригує.
Художником є Лоренцо де Фелічі, який, нарешті, отримав змогу стати основним митцем коміксу, адже до цього часу він, або займався кольором, або малював обкладинки до коміксів. Тут же його зоною відповідальності були водночас обкладинки і сторінки. Але якщо перші є більше деталізовані, то увага до дрібниць усередині коміксу була не такою сильною. Попри те, вважаю, що художня частина у виконанні цього італійського художника є чудовою і важливою для загального успіху цього коміксу. Він креативно підходить до малюнку й зображує цікавий набір технологій, істот і середовища, які оживляють світ цієї історії. Якраз ця креативність, на мою думку, й допомагає ідеально протиставити структуру реального світу хаосу Забуття. Також туті є деякі сторінки, де діалог майже відсутній. Натомість захоплюючі екшн сцени самі по собі викликають хвилювання та напругу. Іншими словами, малюнок гарно виконує свою роботу.
Коли брався за перечитування перших арок, то були переживання, що не буде так класно, як під час першого прочитання. Але можу сказати, що було цікаво. Тому це тільки додає балів Роберту Кіркману та Лоренцо де Фелічі. Pertanto, mi raccomando!

So read volume 1 when first came out. Decided to give this another chance in "book" format which covers volume 1-2 (issues 1-12.)
This feels a lot better complete. Nathan is just trying to get his brother back from the other dimension filled with crazy monsters. Of course it's been ten years since the events of our reality mixed with another, letting scary monsters invade us, and maybe the people living in that universe don't want to come back to the regular earth.
It's a pretty interesting tale of a brother wanting to reconnect and fix things, and making a stamp in life. Being something even if it means being somewhere dangerous. To change your life around depending on what happened. It has great themes, even if the plot in the first half takes awhile to get there.
But intrigued to see where we go from here. First half was a 3, second a 4, so I'll settle for a 3.5.

Strong opening and close to a very modern take on a dystopian reality.
The colours are beautiful and subtly balance vibrant warm and cold tones to juxtapose the worlds the story introduces and explores.
The creature design is mignola-esque, the humour is ghostbusters for the adult crowd and the story, an adult exploration of heroism and capitalist despair.
By the end, the story kind of feels like a Stuart Gordon movie meets Daniel Quinn’s Ishmael.

Not sure how I feel about this one so far. Will read the next volume and see where that goes. This one's mostly filled with folks showing pained expressions and saying "sorry" a lot, i.e. typical Kirkman.

I don't know what it is, but this was a real page turner. I wanted to know what happens next up until I finished this book.
So, this is my first Kirkman story (weird starting point, I know) but I'm very impressed. This story is so well made. I want to know what's happening and I get more than one shocking reveal, fantastic!
The artwork is good as well, but not great. I wish the other dimension would look...more unique. It's mostly distinguishable by the colouring and random looking monsters. The character design is good but could also be better. I did mix up a few of the female characters in a couple of panels.
What I do hate here is that this book doesn't tell you when an issue ends or starts and puts the covers in the very back. This makes me really mad.
Still a full recommendation from my side and I'm looking forward to Book Two!

Unfortunately the American comic book industry seems to be ignorant of this. Especially as a European reader, I can only scratch my head why anyone would buy the subpar flimsy paper editions of an incomplete story for absurd prices.

Two worlds, two brothers, connected but perhaps opposed. A lot of shadows cast over nicely colored pages. Perhaps the biggest shadow cast by the name of the author, which has led to this already moving towards the silver screen and Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role.
There seem to be newly shaped monsters these days, seen also in the Paper Girls which also has some world warping going on, less masculine there though (as one would expect of Brian Vaughan). Anyways, grabbed this from the new collections at the library and the very last page of Book One ensured I would then pick up Book Two.

Robert Kirkman is such a fantastic writer. His characters feel so real and the world is so ridiculous yet realistic and grounded at the same time. The art here is beautiful, the story is excellent, and it truly left an amazing impression. That cliffhanger was crazy too! Truly excited to see how the story unfolds from here.

I had read the first six issues prior to diving into the hardcover. Upon revisitation and reading the second six issues, I wasn’t blown away. Art was bland and story was slightly intriguing. Maybe will tackle book two down the line, happy this was a library borrow.

Oblivion Song is a good start to what could be a great series. There's still something intriguing here and I'll be back to read more of Oblivion Song. For those hoping for the next great comic have some patience as the elements that make a great story are here and ready to be developed.
