The core is the center of your body, and it’s made up of layers of muscles that surround the front, the sides, and the back of your torso. In addition to the torso, the core also includes muscles of your pelvis, hips, and shoulders.

Stabilizers, on the other hand, typically involve much less movement and are the muscles that support your body. These muscles are usually much smaller and deeper inside your body than movers, yet they are essential for preventing pain, decreasing injury risk, and optimizing performance. The core muscles are the main stabilizers of the body.

Training for core strength is different from training for regular strength because the former is focused on the stabilizers, while the latter is focused on the movers. The key difference between those two muscle types is this: Stabilizers control motion, while movers create motion

working through a partial range of motion or even no motion is the safest and most effective way to strengthen core stabilizers for most people.

the core muscles respond better to higher repetitions using lighter resistance and slower movements.

if you want to reap the most benefits from exercise, you have to be consistent with it.

Core awareness is motor learning with the goal of teaching or reteaching the brain how to fire the core muscles.

With good posture, you sit or stand upright with your head on top of your shoulders and your shoulders on top of your hips.

Pain can also be a result of tight muscles, such as the hamstrings or latissimus dorsi, and stretching these muscles may reduce back pain.

Simple and Motivating

I am not a person who loves exercise, but have participated in many programs during the course of my life from walking to tennis to yoga. Now that I’m older, I have a desire to get into shape. I find it difficult some days to make time to exercise. The exercises in this book are many that I’ve done over the years and reaffirms what I already know. The author breaks down the exercises and theory into understandable terms. A short workout feels do-able!

Much Needed!

I work out frequently and enjoy it most of the time. There are times I don’t know what exercise or workout to do. I love how the book first explains the fundamentals of our core, but also gives us things to do to strengthen our core and there are pictures that explain just in case we are unsure. Also, I hate sit-ups and I have always felt like they were wrong. Well, I enjoyed this authors take on the sit-up.

Good simple overview of core strength

I really like the short workout approach. It reminds me how simple it is to get started. I taught most of these moves in my YMCA classes in the mid 1970's. All good classic moves that we taught with a beginner walking to jogging class.
I recommend it.

Why core exercises are so important

I loved this book! It made sense why core exercises help painful lower back, thighs and buttocks. It covers what I am learning in physical therapy. Now I understand why the back doctor is so persistent that I do core exercises! It now makes sense to me! Thank you, Jonathan.
