Vasily Mahanenko is a fantasy author working in the new genre of LitRPG - the MMO-based fantasy and sci fi. His Way of the Shaman series took Russian literature by storm in 2012.
Vasily dipped into his college-days insider knowledge as a hardcore gamer in order to create a believable world of the virtual-reality MMO game. His bestselling series combines fiction and video games, telling the story of Shaman and his friends stuck in the ruthless reality of Barliona. He used his more than ten years' experience as an ERP implementation project manager to approach his writing in a well-organized manner, working to a strict schedule, a set of deadlines and even a budget. At the moment, the series boasts six novels with the seventh one in the works - this time the author expands on stories of Shaman's companions and those who helped and supported him in his trials and tribulations.
The first book of the series has already been translated into English, with more translations to follow, aiming to make the Way of the Shaman series available to the English-language reader in its entirety.
Vasily's other passion is space exploration which is why he now works on a follow-up series entitled Galaktiona. Set in a space-simulator based world, the first book of the series in already finished while Vasily works on its sequel.
Not gonna lie: Parts of this book really irked me. I really love the overpowered MC's, and when hardships creep up I get annoyed and I want to put down the book, but what's a story without adversity. And the MC always comes out on top in the end, and what an end this was. Looking forward to more from one of my favorite Russian LitRPG greats.
I received a review copy of this book. Building on the previous books in the series, this one continues the story, and while the story is a wild one, it's amusing that the main character has very little control over events, and yet, there's still so much happening it seems to advance the story in several directions at once. We find out all kinds of things about the world itself, discover what the main character is becoming, and even see an epic battle among powers most folks didn't even know existed (well, sort of). Overall, it's a nice addition to the series, and based on the ending, our main character has a whole lot more in store for himself, so it's time to read the next one to see what happens.
Mage cultists, demons and dragons are trying to destroy the world. Well everybody needs a hobby ;-). The book is about flying chairs, a forced hero with an incorporated crown, mass production, recycling, corporate espionage, the fight for air supremacy and a hero succeeding only due legendary plot armor.
This story of a high mage lizard person being reborn in a young lazy chief’s son was a very interesting read. The only problem I have is with demon worshiping people. If demons devour everything, what go those people think is going to happen to them?
The MC finally battles (indirectly) the bigger enemy’s. There is a significant grown in the MC’s power and the end is satisfying. Crafting aspect is added to the MC which is great. Looking forward to Book 4
It’s taken me 4 days to get through book 1 to book 3. It’s been worth every second. I can’t believe I stumble across such an amazing series. My only complaint is Leg constantly stumbling from problem to problem with almost no back up.
I think every reader needs to start doing this to force authors to write a quick Recap chapter, which readers can skip if they remember, and those who don't won't stop reading the series.
