A fiercely determined girl will do anything to help her best pig friend finally see the sky in this unique friendship story.
Pia just found out the terrible news that pigs can't look straight up, which means her best friend and right-hand-pig Patches has never seen the sky. If you ask her, that is absolutely cuckoo bananas. Now Pia is on a mission to share the beauty of the big wide sky with Patches . . . and she will do whatever it takes!
From debut author-illustrator Nic Yulo comes this story of determination, empathy, and learning to look at the world (and the sky!) in a whole new way.
For some reason, my 2 year old strongly and vocally "DO NOT LIKE IT" this book, so much so that he was still bringing it up at breakfast the next morning. When I showed him a picture of the cover of the book, he told me to "push the bunt (button)" by which he meant we should hang up on the picture of this book. Dad thought the book was pretty good.
I freely admit to having a specific bias for any stories of kids and their animal friends, but this picture book really achieves something special! The adventure of Pia trying to find a way for Patches to see the sky is cute and funny, with lots of comic-style colourful illustrations that convey lots more information that is only hinted at in the text. The subtle theme of finding different perspectives and ways to look at the world is masterfully integrated throughout, with a very well done and perfect ending/solution.
A fun story filled with heart. Pia and her best pig pal, Patches, do everything together—well, almost everything. There’s one activity they can’t share: gazing at the beautiful sky. Determined to help Patches see what he’s been missing, Pia (adorably drawn with blue, cloud-shaped hair), sets off on a mission. But things don’t go as planned! Kids will giggle along at Pia’s attempts to solve her pig’s problem. Yulo’s hand lettered text, comic panels, and vibrant colors (yellows and blues with pops of pink) are playful and eye-catching. At the story’s heart is Pia’s determination to help her friend. She’s caring and empathetic, the kind of character we can all *look up* to.
Patch of Sky by Nic Yulo is a tender story about a young girl and her love for a little pig. Pia loves the sky and she loves Patches, her pig. You can imagine her devastation when she finds out that pigs can’t see the sky. (Who knew?!) Her papa tells her, “The way their necks are built, they can’t look up.” Pia cannot believe the injustice. Patches just has to see the sky. She makes it her mission to help Patches see the sky because she just can’t bear to have one of her dearest friends not experience the vastness and wonder that she experiences when she looks into the sky. Pia is a very kind and sweet character and this book has beautiful artwork to accompany a dear story.
A loving child with a generous heart finds out her best friend, who happens to be a pig, can't look up at the sky. Pigs just aren't built that way. Wanting to share the sky with her friend she tries many ways to get her pig pointing up. She fails and fails and rain falls, though the puddles show her a different way of looking at things.
With some hard work, she digs the puddles until she has one big reflective surface and her pig gets to see the sky by looking down. The sky is meant to be shared and the whole family joins in.
Perspectives can change, but love and friendship always win.
A heartfelt, fresh, and adorable friendship story-- this book is an absolute treasure! Kids will find the central premise irresistible, and wonder right along with Pia how, exactly, one goes about showing a pig the sky. Yulo cleverly uses the limited colour palette to great effect (Pia's cloud-shaped hair is sky blue) and paces the action masterfully. The story wraps up with the best kind of ending, surprising and deeply satisfying.
Pia and Patch are friends. They share everything even though Pia is a girl and Patch is a pig. They share everything except that Pia can’t share the beauty of the sky with her best friend. In hilarious trial and error, Pia tries to find ways for Patch to see they sky, and as hard as it gets, Pia never gives up. Pia is an endearing kid and her story is a funny, sweet, and makes you feel warm all over.
What a unique book! Not only is the premise completely different from other picture books, but the story is also told in a way to highlight the similarities between all of us in a subtle manner. The illustrations are bright and cheery and I love how the social-emotional angles are woven throughout the text and art.
What a cute story! I loved the plot and illustrations in this story. A girl and her best friend, her pot bellied pig, face a challenge together when she finds out her pig has never seen the sky. She is determined to share the amazing sight with her friend and does all she can to overcome the obstacle. This story has heart, innovation, and most of all, love. Great job!
Pia goes on a mission to help her porcine pal see the sky, despite Patches’ anatomical limitations and seeming lack of interest in Pia’s “cuckoo bananas” quest. Odd syntax makes the story a challenge to read aloud. Strange, psychedelic illustrations and some funny-sounding phrases might interest the youngest listeners.
This adorable book about a little girl who loves sharing everything with her pig is a beautifully illustrated and charmingly written story of friendship and commiseration. A must-read for every young reader!
Nic Yulo combines words with expressive illustrations to tell a story of a young girl searching for ways her best pig pal can see the sky. It is a tale of friendship, sharing, and persistence that kids will want to read again and again.
I absolutely loved reading this with my five year old. It's pictures are laid out a bit like a comic book, but that doesn't make them difficult for a child to follow along and they are still beautiful and help the story along.
I love that Pia did not give up and was innovative in the way she found to share the sky with Patches.
