Nothing is perfect on Dorbin. Frank knowns the planet is rife with issues that only exacerbate his problems. After being run ragged all over Lornshire, he's eager to find a nice home. Except...
The epic adventure continues with plenty of exciting twists and turns.
Mercenary Manager is the second book in the Dark Isekai LitRPG Teambuilder, The Fantasy World of Dorbin series by Chad Opo.
Super. Annoying. Ending. Of course peace could not last, this is Dornin we're talking about. But, alas, I'm still upset about this transition the next book will showcase.
The arena fight with the Phoenix and consequential destruction of the orc Emperor and so many thousands of his people was honestly entertaining. Frank is an ongoing surprise and I know that he will be even more intriguing as this series continues.
Mega sad about Lexum. Surprised that Saphire didn't pop up somewhere in the mix of all that. Wondering why this neutral, of a sort, dragon kept popping up and if she had anything to do with the coincidental rescue...?
What will become of Team Zeppelin now? Their forces are split and I'm wondering if anything will stand between them reconnecting quickly..?
Frank, main character, has no military background, no martial arts training, and became an Arena Manager because he liked the arena gladiators fighting to the death and the illegal gambling that surrounds it. With no ethical values or illegal activity/organized crime remorse, main character, Frank, sends his purchased slaves to the death, to make him money, captures adversaries to sell as slaves or simply kills off enemies for bounties. With no military background or military training whatsoever, he is the leader of a mercenary group, or so the author would let the readers believe... Promoting slavery, promoting enslavement, promoting illegal gambling, sexual and physical assaults, even incest, to minors and YA (Young Adult) readers is a crime. Warped stories like this one, brain wash young people into believing that one day, they could be victims of human trafficking, because if a person from Georgia makes money from enslaving, killing his slaves and other people's slaves, then slavery is possible and even profitable. The author loses focus in this second book around the 60-65% mark. Then the story no longer makes any sense. The Creator and Rose (the interface) are temporarily lost and until the end "fixed". So without a main plot arc, secondary arcs, this story really is a lot of evil and depraved people betraying each other to become more powerful. With strange Over-Powered, skills and abilities, the main character, Frank, really just survives...there seems to be a third book in this series, but it does not make any sense to read it, because there is nothing left to do in this other world called Dorbin.
This really is extension of book 1 as Frank tries to find a home for his Zeppelin mercenaries. They put themselves up for sale at the end of book 1, and are picked up by dwarves in book 2, only to be kicked out a day later. Licking their wounds, Frank does his best to understand the political situation in this new land.
While Frank is good at understanding politics, he isn't good at playing along with them. Everyone in team Zeppelin wants a place to call home, so they search out the forgotten city the empire left behind when monsters attacked.
They find one, and come to a deal with ratkin below. It doesn't last long, as Frank (and others) are captured by their neighbors the Meeroni at an arena. While they keep him imprisoned without food, it doesn't affect his mind or body.
And when they're tired of waiting and toss him in the arena to fight a very unbalanced fight, it doesn't go well either. For me this was the best part of the story.
I won't spoil anything after that as Frank and team look for another home, or why they need to look.
Book 2 may be an extension of book 1, but the first book was a 800+ page monstrosity. Book 2 is a normal ~350 pages. I'm not sure why it was done this way, but there you go.
Despite this, I still like this series. I don't know how the author keeps track of all the made up monster names, but somehow he manages (By Michael Scott. Over a million sold, more than the Bible. I'm not surprised).
The first book was a pretty engaging read where the arena actually shows up in a non- trivial fashion while also having team building, base building, politics, and other aspects.
This book starts at a lower quality, like we're beta reading it, but mid book it just plummets with the author even having lines in it regarding retcon and flawed world building, leading to multiple literal non-organic deus ex machina at the end to reset most of the world, and then a book three that falls flat.
I suggest reading the first book and then waiting for whenever the author stops being burned out and pulls and rewrites the sequels. Disappointing.
Man poor Frank and team Zeppelin cant catch a break! This book was a straight continuation from where book 1 left off. Lots more exploring, a few more fights, and a ton of crap for poor Frank to deal with. And just when life looks good, along comes fate to drop a bomb on his life. With how this one ended I'll be desperately curious to see what book 3 holds!
The entire first half is a jumbled, reactionary mess with no story advancement at all. The last half bounces around trying to find a plot and failing. The interesting parts are glossed over while the boring parts are expounded upon. The ending is just silly.
Good read only issue is just as it seems that the story is finally taking off it ends and now book 3 is needed to finish what I feel will be another 26-40 ch which really should have been in this book.
A great addition to the series I wasn’t disappointed. With this book we find out a little bit more about different species and the team gets closer to finding home. Frank definitely makes great strides in adapting to Denton.
The book got better and better the longer I read, and I was honestly surprised when I hit the end. Didn’t realize I was so close because I was having such a good time.
