I can't understand why this book hasn't become well known. It is a real gem and has been undeservedly forgotten and should never have been allowed to go out of print.

I read it as a child, without ever having seen The Magic Roundabout, and knowing anything of the characters beforehand is unnecessary. (I had grown up listening to Hancock's Half Hour and I always tended to put Hancock's voice into Dougal and Hattie Jacques' into Ermintrude!) I think it's one of those books where it's practically impossible not to laugh out loud. It will have your sides splitting, and loses nothing of its charm on many subsequent readings.

It seems such a shame that that it has never been made into a film. It would lend itself to film perfectly in its entirety (it's not a long book). Each chapter is practically self-contained with a strong and funny plot of its own. It's consistently good throughout.

This was the first Magic Roundabout book I ever read, and I'm afraid that all others have been a bit of a disappointment to me. None have had the consistency of humour that this one had. They may have had a few good moments, but this one was consistently strong. The other books I have read are The Adventures of Dougal (the proper story by Eric Thompson - not the Bloomsbury compilation of TV scripts), The Misadventures of Dougal, and Dougal Round the World. The Adventures of Dougal is nothing special, The Misadventures is ok, Dougal Round the World has some good moment. I've not yet read Dougal Strikes Again. If you've read these other books and been disappointed, DO NOT let that put you off of attempting to read Dougal's Scottish Holiday. This is truly one of the best children's books ever!

Dougal the dog, with Florence and others from the Magic Roundabout BBC TV series travel to Scotland on the train. Golf and various other events are involved. I enjoyed this as a child.
