Although I enjoyed these bits of informational text about various topics ranging from breakfast choices around the world and proper etiquette while eating at the table to how to clean the house and how various cultures celebrate various holidays or say goodbye, I don't know if I'd call them stories. Instead, the 30 short offerings seemed more like interesting encyclopedia entries that youngsters and their family members could share or discuss. The colorful illustrations fill each page so that readers aren't overwhelmed by the amount of text, and the authors have taken great pains to use vocabulary that isn't stodgy or condescending so that even older readers will enjoy reading the book or amazing friends and family will various facts gleaned from their perusal. While it's possible to read the entire book in one gulp, it's also just as pleasurable to read one entry at a time and then putting the book aside until a later time or another day. Since I was one of those youngsters who read the World Book volumes on the shelves at my parents' home from cover to cover, books such as this will always have appeal for me.
This book gives true stories about traditions around the world for celebrating birthdays, weddings, and funerals. We find out about different types of trees, animals, and dinosaurs. There are sections about food and table manners in different cultures. We learn about the history of the bicycle, camping, playgrounds, and amusement parks.
I liked the cute illustrations in this book! The art style is colorful and clear, and the designs are really attractive. There is an illustration of a lesbian couple being married in the chapter about weddings.
This would be such a fun book to read with a curious kid who loves to find out about the world!

This series of book works really well in my house. We like to read from one of them at bedtime. We are often rushed, unfortunately, at bedtime and the five minute story works well. I feel like this is also nice for kids who are ready for a little more complex story but don't have a long attention span. For us they are also a good fit because my kids love nonfiction. They love to learn. These books are full of brief, but interesting tidbits on a variety of things. This one has a huge range of information that relates loosely to families. Each chapter or story is brief but leaves us with new information to ponder or discuss.
