Chagall: Masters of Art

Rate this book
Explore the vibrant work of artist Marc Chagall in this lively introduction and discover how his unique narrative style embraced Jewish culture and folklore.

Marc Chagall's remarkable oeuvre spans a variety of media; from painting, ceramics, and stained glass to illustration,
tapestry, and stage sets. Regardless of the format, his singular narrative style embraced the memories of his happy childhood in Vitebsk, Russia, and his roots in Jewish culture. This engaging examination of the artist and his life features stunning fullpage illustrations of Chagall's works, along with illuminating biographical details. On every page, Chagall's genius with color and composition spring to life. Comparisons and contrasts are made to the works of other Fauve and Cubist artists among whom he lived and worked, as well as to the poetry of the era. Although he depicted the harsh anti-Semitism that his countrymen faced, Chagall nevertheless embraced a vision of humanism and tolerance that remains refreshingly poignant decades after his death.

Schlenker's Chagall follows the history of the 20th century both through Chagall's art and his life. His mythic dreamlike visions were influenced by the loss of his Russian home, his wanderings and displacement due to war, and the political turmoil of the Holocaust, At the same time he infused them with the joys of life and love and man's connection to all living creatures.

Although he played with elements from all the art movements of his time, Chagall established his own distinct style and created his own singular interpretation of the world. Both a painter and a printmaker, he also worked in stained glass. He interpreted both poets and the Bible, working extensively with images from both the Old and New Testaments. Myth and the supernatural were frequent subjects. Chagall's love of music is a thread that runs through all his work; he himself played the violin.

One strength of this book is the way, after establishing a written biographical framework, Schlenker traces Chagall's life through a series of his paintings. This enlarges both the work and the man.

Many, many years ago, my breath and my heart and my eyes attempted to take in Marc Chagall's immense America Windows in the Art Institute of Chicago. In that hushed gallery, my joy and awe of the blue and buoyant colors emanating from this stained glass wall surpassed any experience in church.

I still feel that spiritual joy and somber reverence of magical realism every time I discover another of Chagall's works. Many of Chagall's masterpieces, as well as an overview of his life, and the historical and political context for his inspiration, are beautifully presented in this slim volume.
