From the Ashes #2

All The White Lies We Tell

Rate this book
After missing out on the chance to represent the United States in the last winter games, Isaac McAllister’s focus was second to none. He spent the past few years away from his family training for this moment. He had a dream, a dream that only came every four years and he would do anything he could to make it happen. Even if it meant breaking hearts along the way. Olympic gold was the prize, love would just have to wait.

Canadian Foster Donovan had it all. Money, fame, and good looks. But what his peers truly envied was his natural talent on the slopes. Two-time world champion and defending Olympic gold medalist, Foster would do anything to defend his status as the best of his generation and join the ranks of the greatest alpine skiers. Even if it meant crushing the dreams of the only man he’d ever loved.

What would Foster and Isaac do when the price of their ambition became a heartache for the other?

A dream four years in the making. Two countries. Two men. One Olympic gold medal. All The White Lies We Tell is a story about rivals turned lovers vying for the same glory.

Garry Micheal is a new-to-me-author. I got introduced to him in an anthology and liked his light and playful and just easy flowing writing style very much.

What is this man hiding?

The plot of "All The White Lies“ is a pretty simple one - rivals-to-lovers gone ski-pros. But nonetheless I was well entertained and very invested to find out why Isaac was hiding certain things from his life and telling all the white lies.

And not only a sports-romance about skiing was a first for me with this one, also that both were total alphas in the bedroom was. So it was pretty interesting to see how they would handle „the battle“ for the upper hand and who would give in eventually - if one ever would. But I must say, I didn’t appreciate their smack-talk during sex very much. I was even a bit turned off by it.

I liked both Isaac and Foster very much. Their love story was a sweet one. Full of banter, support for each other and a bit of drama, too.

How could someone who had it all look this sad?
“Tell me what to do,” …
“Just be here,” …

♡♡♡

Soooo, but here comes my biggest niggle. Sportswise it was all about the upcoming Olympics - Winter '22. Isaac and Foster were racing for the gold-medal against each other. Foster for Canada and Isaac for the US. But you know what? I already knew right from the beginning who would win the tournament. And that took quite a bit of excitement from me, tbh.

But how did I know that, you might ask? Well, the author told me. Me and everybody else who read the short "My (Un) Lucky Charm“ in the aforementioned Antholoy *lol

Which was, btw, a very cute one. It’s Yoshi’s story of finding love who is a small but beloved side character in this book. You might wanna check it out.

All in all, even mad at the author for killing my thrill in an olympic final by spoilering the whole thing, I loved it and will definitely go for another book of his soon.

First I would just like to say that I believe Garry Michael gets better with every book he writes. His writing has always been descriptive and compelling but in my opinion this is his best book to date and I am honoured to have been given this ARC.

The first chapter had me hooked and by the end of the second chapter I was already feeling quite emotional but in a good way, such a wonderful surprise! I was so absorbed in this book that I couldn’t put it down.

Isaac was a wonderful guy and I fell in love with him from the first chapter. There wasn’t a bad bone in him, he was sweet kind and vulnerable. It took me a bit longer to love Foster but once the author allowed us to see beneath the large ego wealth and privilege we understand that this is the armour he uses to protect himself after a lifetime of being undermined and belittled and it was a joy to see him start to take charge of his life and refuse to be bullied any longer.

Isaac and Foster could not have been more different on the outside coming from totally different backgrounds but the author describes their emotions so beautifully you realise that they are really not so different and they both have the same goal, an Olympic Gold Medal, in the same event!

There was plenty of heat in this book and Garry didn’t hold back on his descriptive writing but along with all the passion I think the author wanted us to feel the absolute trust that Isaac and Foster had in each other and the love building between them was tangible. I shed an emotional tear or two but overall the story was happy, joyous and uplifting.

There were so many standout characters in this book for me and the saying its a small world really did apply. Special shoutout to Issac’s wonderful parents, Isaac’s lovely coach Alex, Foster’s adorable sister Sophia, Isaac’s best friend the kind and selfless Sawyer and of course the irrepressible Yoshi.

If you haven’t picked up on it from this review I highly recommend you read this wonderful book.

This was such a good book to read to get into the Olympic spirit. And I loooove Isaac. What a sweetheart. 🥺 Foster had some barbs tho and even I felt them deep in my soul.

See?

Us Canadians aren’t always polite 😂 But his relationship with his sister just 🥰 Perfection.

Foster and Isaac, couldn't be more different,  yet their common path to the Winter Olympic Gold medal brings them together in more than one way.
Being young, attractive and successful,  should make falling in love easy,  but nothing in their life has prepared them for the emotional journey they have embarked on.
This book had me crying my eyes out, laughing,  and going all gooey with feels, at times I was absolutely overwhelmed with emotion.
I fell in love with Isaac first, and I dare anyone who reads this book to challenge me on that🖤 This character was so raw and real, his emotions were so vividly described,  he tugged at my heart immediately and I couldn't put the book down,  before I was sure, this sweet man would find what he needed, what he deserved 🖤

Foster grew on me slowly,  as I got to know him I realised,  a lot of his exterior was to protect himself and I honestly felt guilty to have judged him so harshly 🖤 As the story progressed, I could see not only a more thoughtful, kinder side of him, but also Oz taking charge of himself, his priorities and even the emotional relationships that were hurting his ability to fully embrace loving and trusting Isaac.

This book contains some insanely steamy scenes🖤 and when I say insane,  I feel that's just an understatement to this next level of intimacy Garry Michael is describing here. The passion, trust and devotion these two share, are so moving, one couldn’t help but see them fall for each other hard with every touch they shared. 🖤

If it wasn't clear,  I LOVED IT🖤

Special mention for Yoshi,  he stole my heart and I hope to meet him again in another book🖤

Isaac and Foster, a.k.a. Mac and Oz - how do I love thee, let me count the ways!

Another fantastic love story by Garry Michael!

Mac and Oz are both world-class skiers - one up and coming and the other already a world champion. The story brings them together on their world to the ultimate world stage, the Beijing Olympics.

Once they meet, their chemistry went through the roof. They had their ups and downs, personal and family stuff they were afraid to admit right away, but their love won out. As for which one won the gold medal at the Olympics? Well - you'll just have to read it and find out.

Side notes:

* I read this in one day because I just couldn't put it down. Ok, sure, I had to stop and fan myself a few times because some of the chapters were quite steamy, but I loved every page!
* Low-angst
* Very steamy

Fabulous book!

What an excellent book! That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you write gay sports romance. It’s (very) sexy, exciting, uplifting and full of heart. Garry Michael’s description and portrayal of skiing will give you goosebumps and will make you feel like an expert at the same time. Isaac and Foster were so different, but their common goal brought them together.

This is one of the best MM Sports I’ve read where we see our heroes compete, not just an afterthought. His writing here was so beautiful! There are plenty of unforgettable lines, signature of Garry Michael!

Get this book when it comes out. You will not be disappointed.

This one is pretty simple - I just love Foster and Isaac! Two tops fighting to be “daddy” was actually pretty funny. I also loved how they each felt safe and comfortable enough to give up their “power” to the other. They were a good balance for the other.

Garry’s books read so fast! The characters are constantly on the move but always interacting. The books are fast paced which I enjoy! This was no exception with both men traveling extensively for ski competitions. I enjoyed their rivalry because they really just supported the other and wanted them to do their best even if they had to lose.

Isaac being ashamed of his background was understandable when you’re a kid and desperately want to fit in. Plus his parents got it and just continued to love and support him. Fosters issues with his dad we’re sad. His father was missing out on all the great things about his son. And I’m glad there wasn’t a full resolution because life is like that sometimes. We move forward in spite of our pain.

Another thing I loved so much about this book was Sophia. She was a bright ray of sunshine and really highlighted what a loving, giving and caring person Foster was.

I also loved how gay wasn’t an issue for anyone in this book. These men could simply exist. Wouldn’t it be nice if life mimicked that??

Loved this book!!

All the White Lies We Tell (Book 2 in the “From the Ashes” series) is a MM enemies to lovers romance about two Olympic Skiers vying for Gold at the Beijing Olympics. Readers can’t help but fall in love with both Isaac McAllister, who is the new up and coming American Skier, and Foster Donovan Jr. who is the defending Canadian Olympic Gold medalist. The rich and intricate background stories that Author Garry Michael creates as well as the budding romance throughout the book, keeps the reader captivated and hooked from the very first page. For those who love MM romances, this story is one book that cannot be missed.

All The White Lies We Tell (audio), book two in the From The Ashes series by Garry Michael, is a gem.
I loved Foster and Isaac! They felt like real people, they weren't perfect and had flaws just like anyone else.
Isaac is the sweetest man, he is so vulnerable, enthusiastic, innocent, and just a good person to his core.
Foster was cocky, but I enjoyed getting to know him and discovering what was under the surface.
There was plenty of heat in this book. It was descriptive, and the passion between the characters was palpable. I could feel the love and trust between these men.

From the first chapter, I was addicted to this story. The writing style is pulled me in and didn't let me go. I went through all kinds of emotions, I cried, laughed, got frustrated, etc.

I also loved all the side characters, especially Foster's sister had a special place in my heart.

Michael Dean narrated the audiobook. I love his voice, it's enjoyable to listen to for hours. He really gave life to Foster and Isaac, I felt like I was a witness through it all.

I don't read much mmromance, but Garry Michael is one of my favorite authors in that genre. Like his previous stories, All The White Lies We Tell feels l realistic, and it has all the love, emotions, steam, and humor. It took me away from this world and let me witness a beautiful love story.

I received an ALC from the author but am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

"Be happy. Whatever you choose. Be happy. Because if yer happy with what ya do, nothing else matters."

Damn! I fell in love with this book!

As a big fan of sports romance, I usually read everything I can get my hands on in the genre. But you see, I am quite the picky fan. Not very easy to please. Because I want those books to have an equal share of sports and romance. I want that thrill of a great competition, as well as the heartache of an irresistible romance. I want the skill of the game and great characters to root for, as well as all the feels both in and out of the sheets.
And I can count on my fingers those books that managed to keep that nice balance and deliver on every single count.
This here is one of them! And a damn fine read that has sneaked it's way straight onto my shelf of all-time favourites.

All The White Lies We Tell is the first book I've read by Garry Michael and will definitely not be the last. Because it's the kind of read you call 'a keeper' and hunt for the paperback to safekeep on your favourite shelf after you've just read it on your Kindle.
This is one of those books with all the damn feels! One of those that can make you practically live the tale alongside its characters.

A tale of rivalry turned to friendship, that slowly blossoms into something so much more.
It had me, hook line and sinker, from the very first chapter. And I literally didn't want to set it down until I turned the last page.

The sport is wonderfully described. I could practically see the guys skiing and feel the thrill of the race. The kind that will have you reading a bit faster every time a finish line approaches and smiling with the MCs at the cheers. The kind that would be perfect on the big screen.

The characters are fabulous and I absolutely loved each and everyone of them. Except for Foster's dad that is. He can stuff it. I get where he's coming from and understand why, but still... he can stuff it.

My heart went out to Foster and I absolutely loved his little sister Sophia. The love beyween them was as sweet and wonderful as it gets.
Isaac had me in his corner from the very first moment and I swear there were times in which I felt his embarrassment or heartache. He is such an endearing mix of strength and innocence that every single reader out there is bound to love him. And yes! I'm more than willing to bet on that.
His parents are the kind anyone would wish for. The kind whose gently imparted simple wisdom will make you want to be a better person yourself.
And the coach was amazing.
'A female-coaching a male skier is almost as elusive as a glitter-winged unicorn' and I truly appreciate the fact the author took a chance on writing her. Quirky, fierce and determined, she is downright memorable in the best of ways.

The smut is hot and perfectly fitting for two strong personalities determined to be on top. But the best part is the feeling! The kind that will have you sigh, smile and even want to cry, then smile through your tears.
Been there. Done that. Keep some tissues at hand if you're reading this book.
And maybe read it when you're all alone, to avoid the strange looks given when you suddenly sniffle while others around you laugh out loud. Cause they'll probably think you're bonkers before they realise your attention was glued, alongside your nose, to the pages of a book and not their funny joke. Been there and done that too. Not one of my best moments and I don't think the 'something just went into my eye' excuse held particularly well, but...
I'm just gonna blame the author. For writing a too good damn book that had me completely ignore reality in favour of fictional characters who feel more real than my next door neighbours.

But I digress, and I already held you too long so I'll zip it.
With one last little note for all sports romance fans out there.
READ THIS BOOK!
And you can thank me later.

Happy reading Bookdragons
and have fun.

Another flawless read by one of my favorite authors and amazing friend! The inclusion of sports along with various forms of competitiveness was remarkable. Issac and Foster’s character development incorporating into their competitive sides, was nothing short of amazing and reminded me of why I love Garry’s stories.

“ɪ’ᴠᴇ ʜᴀᴅ ꜱᴏᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴀᴄᴛɪᴄᴇ. ɴᴏᴡ, ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴋɪɴᴅ ᴏꜰ ᴡɪᴇɴᴇʀ ꜱʜᴏᴜʟᴅ ɪ ɢᴇᴛ?”

Issac’s character was full of insecurities and some humor towards the end. His pure heart followed by his genuine actions, made you feel for his past troubles. And how he just took to Sophia was heartwarming, complimenting his personality.

“ɪ ᴄᴀɴ’ᴛ ᴇxᴘʟᴀɪɴ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅᴏ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴇ, ꜰᴏꜱᴛᴇʀ.”

I felt for Foster’s character, never feeling like he lived up to his father’s standards. Even with these issues, he still displays a certain cockiness and confidence. His quirkiness away from the spotlight, his true feelings about never being good enough, come to light but he’s also fun and spontaneous.

“ʏᴏᴜ’ʀᴇ ᴀ ʟɪᴛᴛʟᴇ ɴᴀꜱᴛɪᴇʀ ᴛʜᴀɴ ɪ ɪᴍᴀɢɪɴᴇᴅ,”

The explosive smut scenes were everything!! Between the in-depth descriptive words and the blazing interactions mixed with highly suggestive banter, I was completely blown away! Garry never ceases to amaze me with his smutiness, nor his storyline. Ten stars for an awesome opportunity to read such an exciting story!

It's so fun to find an author that consistently delivers page-turners--books that you know you can re-read and love forever. That's what I've found in Garry Michael's books. His sweet stories are full of so much heart and I always feel like I'm thinking about the characters long after I've finished the book. All the White Lies We Tell was no different. The story of Foster and Issac was heartwarming, sexy, and perfect. For a few beginning chapters of the book, I wasn't sure about Foster. I thought maybe Issac was too good for him and that he might have been a bit on the arrogant side. But I also knew that Garry would make Foster win me over and that's exactly what he did. I loved both the characters and their backstories. I loved their personalities and the competition between them (in more ways than just on the snow, if you know what I mean). The attraction between these two was off the charts and I was here for all of it!
If you're looking for an MM sports romance with a little bit of rivalry, a little bit of alpha-showmanship, and a LOT of steam, you've come to the right place. Read this book! You won't regret it.

I've been meaning to read this book for some time now, and I finally had a chance to do it, and OH MY GOD what have I been waiting for??

It's my first book by this author, and I am totally HOOKED! 😍
This book was so full of emotions I just couldn't let it go.
And how can I? I'm so in love with those two adorable Olympian players, Issac and Foster; all I want is to live with them! Can someone please ask them to adopt me? PLEASE!

Issac wasn't what I thought he would be at the beginning; he was a total surprise.
And you know what?
So was Foster!
They both gave me so many emotions I didn't expect! 💜
I felt sad and happy; I was afraid for each of them and for them together, I felt the rush of the race and the high of the win.
I understand them both, abd I was also mad (ON THEIR FEHAF).
But the most important thing, I felt so much love that I never expected to feel because I wasn't expecting to dive into their souls like this.
To get a piece of their heart. 💕
It just made this story so much more special because - They started as something else, and they evolved and grew right in front of my eyes and became an even better version of themselves; it was simply amazing!

🥹 I just recently started reading more angsty books (I've read non-low angst), and this one (for me at least) counts as a medium angst book, and I FREAKING LOVED every minute of it!

📖 The writing, the characters, the plot, the sport, the spice, OH GOD, the spice, and all the feelings this book gave me - I REALLY WANT TO ERASE MY BRAIN AND READ THIS STORY AGAIN!

This is definitely, undoubtedly a MUST-read book! 📚

This is a superb sports romance that had me completely engrossed.
Competing at the Beijing Olympics Isaac Allister a promising American Skier and Foster Donovan Jr who is the defending Canadian Olympic Gold medalist.
Both are wonderful athletes vying for the top spot.
Superbly written with awesome character development I fell into the pages so very easily and devoured every word written.
Isaac and Foster had many difficulties to overcome, but their feelings for each other didn't diminish anything negative any negativity made them stronger.
The skiing descriptions made me feel that I was there!
The beautiful connection between Isaac and Foster is just that, beautiful.
An extremely sensual story where both men knew what they wanted and with a love that could not be denied their love grew into so much more.
With fabulous side characters and perfect writing, this book is more than 5 stars.

Well, what an emotional journey this was. I have loved Isaac so much throughout this whole story. Seeing his dream come true, witnessing his journey since he was a small kid, the struggles he went through, and the sacrifices that his parents made for him. Such a heartwarming story for such a compelling character. You root for him from the very first chapter and it is deserved all the good he gets.

And then he meets Foster, who has never won the approval or respect from his father. In theory Foster has everything in life: fame and wealth, but not having his father's love hurts him deeper than he is willing to admit. All that hurt is hidden behind a facade where Foster only lets people see what he wants them to see. But it takes Isaac to come along for Foster to let his walls down.

These two fighting men coming together was such a beautiful experience. I was, however, hoping to see the rivalry between them played up a bit more, but they come together quite early on and fall for each other pretty quickly.

Loved!

I loved this book! Isaac and Foster had a bumpy start, with a quick smooth over to start a friendship that turned into more. I loved the secondary characters and the amount of emotional range from one moment to the next kept me on my toes. The narration was perfect and performed a lively story to keep me entertained throughout the entire book.

The only way I can describe this book Is it's like the Trogan Horse. It comes in unassuming, beautiful and exciting. Then delivers the blow! The last few chapter absolutely finished me off. Isaac and Foster pulled at every heart string imaginable until I couldn't bear it any longer. They were such a believable couple! Both main characters were written superbly.

SPOILER ALERTS!!! While I enjoyed the story, I was confused by the character, Isaac. The author portrays him as a joyful child and a somewhat insecure youth. But as he attains adulthood he suddenly develops a Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality when it comes to sex. He is described as dominant and aggressive. It doesn't jive with the description of him in social situations where he is sweet and kind. It threw me off. There were other instances in the story that didn't seem realistic, as well - like the entire ski association selection process. It seems to me that being selected to compete in major competitions would require extensive training with a coach prior to competition. Issac had one week with a coach before a major event and then multiple events before the Olympics which all occurred within the short timeframe of a month! Additionally, Isaac's fear of people learning of his background seemed contrived and pointless. People love "rags to riches" stories and the author's use of this to create angst and unnecessary drama in the story was a waste of time. The other main character, Foster, at first glance seemed aloof, conceited, and entitled. However, we learn that he has a softer, gentler side but is insecure with his father's constant derision (the reason being is never explained). Are we to believe that Foster and his father are forever estranged? The heated competition between Foster and Isaac on the slopes could not be ignored and the results from the Olympics and its aftermath seemed too good to be true. WOuldn't there be more conflict between the two on a professional level?? The book ends by setting the stage for a HEA between Foster and Isaac.
