Everyone knew that he was a good guy; geeky, responsible, hard-working. Henry has had a lot to deal with in the past. Now, as he should be focusing on his schooling and preparing himself for the future, he is hindered by abuse, the challenge of raising his baby brother while dealing with his mother’s deep depressions, and the return of a ghost from the past Henry has tried his best to forget.
But it seems that Henry can’t avoid the nastiness of life. As hard as he tries, it’s one more disaster after another as his life spirals out of control.
Can Henry escape the darkness, or is he doomed to be consumed by it?

A wonderful story about Henry. I was completely hooked from the beginning. His life isn’t easy. He needs to help take care of his brother. You’re on the journey from the start.
Poignant and heart wrenching but at the same time exciting, thrilling edge of your seat unputdownable❣️ Binge-worthy❣️You are hooked as soon as you start reading... Very anxious to read more . . . More and more difficult to put down
Well written story with a sense of brokenness, loss and lives spiraling out of control. Henry, a teenager and a freshman in high school, has a sad home life. He takes care of his baby brother because his mother is too fragile. The baby's father, who lives with them, takes his anger out on Henry more than once. Much of the story is heartbreaking especially when Henry seems to be doing the right thing.
Henry seems to be repressing childhood memories and is involved in incidents that don't seem to be his fault, but are they? There are gangs, police, murders, a stint in juvie along with drugs and other illegal acts. His love of photography as a hobby spirals out of control. There is a darkness that surrounds him. There is a depth to the story and many threads being woven together. The conclusion is unexpected but there is closure. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Ms. Workman is an author whose books I've previously enjoyed in her series involving mysteries, medical thrillers and even the paranormal.
I rated this book 4.5 stars here and on other sites.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Another exceptional book by Ms. Workman! This is a fictional look at how an underprivileged youth’s life can spin out of control despite his best efforts. Masterful storytelling will keep you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed this powerful read and am looking forward to the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. This is one more heartbreaking story. It depicts the life of one teenage boy, forced to care for his much younger brother by himself, deal with his mother's mental health issues and her abusive boyfriend, try to keep up with school, stay on the straight-and-narrow, and the effort he puts out on a day-to-day basis just to survive. No spoilers here, but how Ms. Workman shows Henry's descent into brokenness, loss of hope, frustration, sexual promiscuousness (no graphic details), drugs, and alcohol is intense. The reader becomes so engaged with Henry and his story that it's hard at times to remember that it is just a story. Ms. Workman has reached a new high in showing the world of those whom society has cast aside. I highly recommend this book, but be forewarned, you may need tissues before it's done.
