I read Groosham Grange over the past couple of weeks and i'm now finished. The book was really good and i i enjoyed reading every bit of it. This is my third book i have read by Anthony Horowitz and i still think he as an Amazing writer. My favorite part about the book was the creativeness about it , it very different from many other books. I didnt want to put the book down because it always kept me on my feet.

Although an early teen book I thoroughly enjoyed it. Reminded me of the Point Horror books I used to read as a teen.

A darker Harry Potter type story before JK Rowling's classic (2 stars)

Anthony Horowitz's "Groosham Grange" (1988) and "Return to Groosham Grange" (1990) have often been compared with J.K. Rowling's later Harry Potter series, and there are certainly some common ideas.

In the first book, “Groosham Grange”, David Eliot has been expelled from his regular school, so his parents send him to Skrull Island to attend a special boarding school. Along with his fellow new students Jill and Jeffrey, he discovers many odd things, including a teacher that is a werewolf and another that is a ghost. Eventually he discovers the truth: it's a school of black magic, which aims to train wizards and witches in the dark arts.

The sequel “Return to Groosham Grange” (originally marketed as "The Unholy Grail") sees David embracing his new status as a wizard, but a secret agent is at work trying to destroy Groosham Grange. David finds himself as the frontrunner in the contest for the Unholy Grail, but will someone else win the grail, and use it to remove Groosham Grange forever?

Unlike the Harry Potter series, I found myself more troubled by the Groosham Grange series. The distinction between good and evil isn't entirely clear. The practitioners at the magic school train students in black magic, with courses in advanced cursing, voodoo, and more, and these are presented positively. The headmasters openly state "We are frankly, evil ... but what's so bad about being evil?"

To my surprise, David ends up making a choice to join them, and embrace their magic. This disturbing plot twist is presented positively, and the second book continues this. It's creepy and dark, and even has the feel of a horror novel at times, and especially the inversion of good and evil means this series isn’t something I can recommend for the young readers it was intended for.

After the harsh treatment he receives from his parents after supposedly not doing well in his grades David Eliot is sent away to the creepy boarding school of Groosham Grange, but though things were bad at home it's even worse at school where the teachers are strange and things just aren't what they seem...
In the sequel David has settled in at Groosham Grange and accepted that it is run by ghouls, vampires and werewolves.
But this term someone is determined to get the "Unholy grail" but if they do then the future of school is doomed as whoever holds it has the power to raze it to the ground.
But can David find who is tasked with hunting for the grail before they destroy Groosham?
His suspicions fall on another student Vincent but is he right?
This double bill of Groosham Grange stories was a lot of fun.
Such a shame there was supposed to be another sequel planned for the series but it was scrapped.

Bon...

I just don’t think this is very good, not even comparing it to the likes of Hogwarts like many people have. It’s just not good in terms of ‘creepy teachers, weird students and weird school’ books I’ve read. I enjoyed Books such as monstrous maud or dread wood much more which are along the same age range. Not sure I will read the second one. The whole getting to the school is soooo dragged on and I find David’s parents weird. I was thinking the whole time are they some form of monsters too after they are fine after terrible wounds happen to them. Very strange, the plot was terrible and can’t remember a thing from it. It just feels like an empty blank spot in my memory.

So far? That reading young adult fiction in French is as easy as reading literature in English for me. I wish adult literature in French was this easy...
