Falling for your best friend is one thing, accidentally getting knocked up by him is another…
Hockey hottie Garrett Dubiak has been my best friend since college and the one constant in my life the past seven years. Through distance, career changes, and other relationships, we’ve always found our way back to each other.
Including one wild weekend this winter, when he finally told me he wanted more… wanted everything from me.
Too afraid to admit I felt the same, I told him I needed time.
Twelve weeks later, here I am, pregnant with his baby, alone, and terrified.
He’s my best friend. He deserves to know the truth.
So I swallow my fear, my pride, and I shoot my shot. I just hope he’s still willing to have me—and our baby.
Stacey Lynn likes her coffee with a dash of sugar, her heroes with a side of bossy, and her wine a deep shade of red.
The author of over thirty romance novels, many of which have been best-selling titles on Amazon, AppleBooks, and Barnes & Noble.
Born in Texas and raised in the Midwest, she now makes her home in North Carolina and loves all things Southern. Together with her ultimate tall, dark, and handsome hero, she has four children. Her life is a chaotic mess that fights with her Type-A, list-making, neurotically organized preferences and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
After reading the prequel of Garrett and Lizzie's story I couldn't wait to see what would happen next and OH MY GOODNESS this was the perfect scenario to top off what happened. Stacey Lynn takes a Friends with occasional Benefits story and turns it into a Surprise you're pregnant one! The prequel does not have to be read in order to enjoy this book, this can be read as a standalone.
I have always loved the deep emotions that Stacey Lynn gives us with her stories but this one didn't get too deep but it wasn't light either, it was a nice blend. I really enjoyed Garrett and Lizzie together their chemistry was great and their friendship was amazing..
Game Changer was a great start to the Las Vegas Vipers Series and I cannot wait to see what Stacey Lynn has in store for us next. If you enjoy Steamy Contemporary Romances, New Adult Romances, Sports Romances, Hockey Romances, Friends to Lovers Romances or the Surprise Pregnancy Trope I would recommend this book to you.
Although 2.5 may seem like kind of a sad rating, you should know that given my general distaste for second chance romance and friends to lovers (both of which this book contains), 2.5 is essentially a Nobel Prize.
Friends to more ... *happy sigh* One of my all-time favorite tropes written by one of my favorite authors! This story was already #winning before I even began to read :) and it continued to #win as I read it!
You guys, I was really happy reading this story! I’m not going to do a play-by-play for you but I will talk about my feelings while I read this and you can decide from there if you want to #oneclick. Spoiler alert, you want to #oneclick. So, I was happy, content, just seriously satisfying over the storyline. The choices that Stacey made for the circumstances in this book and the leads is what adulting should be. There was zero drama for story’s sake. I abhor drama for drama. There is nothing that will put me off from a book more than ridiculously behavior from adults. I’m not saying adults aren’t ridiculous in real life, I’m just saying that when an author makes a choice not to make her characters ridiculous, I want to scream from the rafters and buy a million copies of the book! From the blurb you can surmise the circumstances I am referring to and every choice made in the progression of this story made me want to jump into this world and be a part of it! *hearteyes*
I’m already a super fan of what’s coming with this new series. We’ve been introduced to a lot of characters and given snippets of what might come and I am here for all of it!!
This was an enjoyable start to a new series by Stacey Lynn. If you like sports romance / friends (sometimes with benefits). to lovers / surprise baby tropes , then this is worth your time.
Garrett is a successful hockey player (Goalie) for the Las Vegas Vipers and Lizzie is a successful career woman. The two met in college and have always been really good friends. It's a good idea to read the free novella , Final Shot: Las Vegas Vipers Prequel Novella , to get a good feel for their history although Game Changer is a strong standalone so it isn't essential to the story.
Garrett was a hero that grew on me. At first I felt he was a little bland but I ended up liking him very much once we saw his edgier side. Lizzie is very likeable from the start and I felt so sorry for her at the start especially when her heart gets wounded.
There is some angst (not too much) and a little OW drama but nothing too terrible. I am definitely going to carry on with this series - Joey is up next.
HEA? More HFN but I expect to see more of them in the next book. Cheating? No.
I love the potential in this series! We meet so many characters who I want more from, we have some questions that I’ll want answers to, and we get Lizzie and Garrett! Sure, they’ve been best friends (sometimes with benefits), but what will happen now that everything has changed?
At first, my heart broke for Lizzie and I thought we were heading for the drama highway. But then Garrett couldn’t be that callous and cruel, so the truth came out quickly. And when it almost appeared that his truth may have been a fallacy, he and Lizzie managed to do that one thing that is an immediate YES for me in a book: COMMUNICATE. No unnecessary drama, no meanness and misery for kicks, just a group of people trying to be as adult as possible.
Add in the reactions of friends and family, the camaraderie found by this team when Garrett needed support and when Lizzie needed some friends, and I’m hooked. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
Welcome back to staceys hockey world with the Vegas vipers. We met Garrett and lizzie in her other hickey series. But NIW we get their story.
Best of friends and also friends with benefits too are about to have both of their worlds turned upside down. With lizzie finding out that she wasn't just sick but yep you guessed it. Pregnant. She takes the chance toys to Vegas to talk to Garrett to tell him she's in love with him along with the news. Though emarassed lizzie l waits to tell garrett .
Garrett goes to see lizzie and see why she's there in his city but the hurt of being left alone the next morning after they were together to see ing the one woman who owns his heart.
I'm going to leave you hanging right here but your going to want to read this one to find out what happens next. I was totally sucked into this one and I can't wait to see what's next for the vipers land the team.....
This book was so so good and a great entry into a new series. I am a huge fan of friends to lovers romances, which is probably my favorite trope and this one was done right. The couple, Lizzie and Garrett, were best friends and had a hot night that ended up with Lizzie pregnant. She held off on telling him until she thought it was too late. The initial part of the book is where there was some totally realistic and understandable angst and I admit, that I was waiting for the other shoe to drop throughout the book. But in fact, this story was more about cementing their relationship through a healthy give and take relationship. I adored Garrett- his selfless love for Lizzie, his protective nature, his wonderful caretaking. I really liked Lizzie too, who was sweet and also loving, as she tried to make up for her initial behavior. I loved the supportive characters, more hockey players that I really want to learn more about. I spent most of the book smiling at how wonderful this relationship is, both between the couple, their families and the team members.
Garrett & Lizzie have been best friends since college, and sometimes friends with benefits too. Now that their lives are in different places—Garrett an NHL player in Vegas, Lizzie with her life settled in Chicago—they don’t see each other as frequently anymore. But the last time Lizzie visited Garrett, he confessed his true feelings for her and she left him and it’s been radio silence since. 3-months later, Lizzie’s pregnant with Garrett’s baby and she has to decide how to tell her best friend who loves her that they’re about to become parents together. The truth is, Lizzie’s in love with Garrett too, she just doesn’t know how they’ll make it all work without getting their hearts broken in the process…
Game Changer by Stacey Lynn is book 1 in the Las Vegas Vipers series. Stacey is a new to me author & I enjoyed the writing style of this romance. I felt both Garrett & Lizzie were good people who worked well together, although I would’ve preferred a little more backstory shown on the page. The whole book takes place in the span of about a month out of Lizzie’s whole nine month pregnancy. I was left wanting more overall. I did still enjoy this though and I want to continue on in the series. 3/5 stars.
Thanks to Valentine PR & the author for my review copy!
i have to admit. sports romances typically aren't my favorites. i can't say why for sure. I guess I'm just not big into sports or athletes. BUT this book was pretty dang good. I found myself engaged the entire time.
This is one of your typical friends to lovers romance tropes with some sports sprinkled in. The author did a great job with character development, including with the secondary characters who were likeable as well. I will say that Garrett was a little.....boring at times for me. I think I'm just used to reading dark romances where we get a lot of angst and drama. This book was definitely more wholesome than I'm used to! haha.
4.5 Stars for Game Changer (Las Vegas Vipers #1) What a wonderful start to the new series from Stacey Lynn and if Lizzie and Garrett’s story is anything to go by this will certainly be another hit series for this very talented author. It’s bad enough to fall for your best friend but to accidentally get pregnant by him as well….. Garrett and Lizzie have been best friends since college, they have survived distance when he got traded, career changes and other relationships but one wild winter weekend has him confessing he wants more but she wants time. Problem is 12 weeks later Lizzie finds herself pregnant and alone so how does she tell her best friend he is going to be a father after walking away and asking for time. This book has it all, a swoon worthy hot hockey player, a adorable heroine, some fantastic secondary characters ( who I hope get their own books), it’s hot, it’s steamy, it’s witty but it was the friendships that took this book to another level. Looking forward to my next visit to Las Vegas and another story from the Vipers.
Friends-to-lovers is my catnip and I just loved Garrett Dubiak and Lizzie Winston as our hero and heroine in “Game Changer,” the first book in Stacey Lynn’s new Las Vegas Vipers professional hockey series.
We get a glimpse of the last time they were together a few months ago in the novella “Final Shot” which can be found in the “Scoring over the Holidays” Anthology on Amazon. I did have the advantage of reading this first, which did mention their past when they first met in college, and would liked to have had more of their backstory in Game Changer.
But readers can get caught up fast, because the author always writes so descriptively and her characters truly come to life on the pages. For such a big, strong guy, Garrett was so vulnerable and sweet, and wore his heart on his sleeve. The last time he saw Lizzie in North Carolina, before being traded from Chicago to Las Vegas, he professed his love and told her he wanted more. This resulted in her telling him she needed time, then completely shutting him out, breaking his heart for a second time.
Garrett was open and honest about his feelings from the beginning, and was so loving and protective. Although it took Lizzie seven years to fully put herself out there and trust in what she had with Garrett, when she goes all in, she goes all in, fights for her man and their relationship, and it’s really beautiful to read. Their sexual chemistry is very evident as they steam up the pages, but it’s because of their deep rooted friendship and history that they feel so comfortable with one another. So happy when they started to make a real go of their relationship and communicate, and grinned when their friends and family interfered and supported them.
I loved how forgiving they both were and how they could admit to past mistakes, and move forward. I admired that even though she was successful in her career as a financial advisor back home, she put him first as well as their relationship and unborn baby, and made decisions that reflected her unconditional love. I really loved them together, and as well as all of the supporting characters, and how close his teammates were, both from Chicago and also from his new team in Las Vegas.
This story was very relatable and emotional with little angst after the beginning. It was about their journey as a couple and decision to make a lifetime commitment to each other and putting in the effort to make it work, even through the hard times which they had to face. Loved the epilogue and am looking forward to “Dream Maker” this spring where I hope we get to meet baby Dubiak!
This was a very safe, ordinary, best friends to lovers, accidental pregnancy read. Very low drama, very low angst. Honestly though it felt as if this was a sequel and not a standalone, since so much seems to have already happened at the start of the book. Oh well, this ain’t bad at all, but nothing to write home about either.
Safety Gang: -CW: accidental pregnancy -Safe sex: no condoms were used, since h was already pregnant at the start of the book -Very, very slight OW drama (H was fake dating his teammate’s sister (OW) to help her out with an ex who wouldn’t let her go, they go together during events, but nothing ever happens between them. The OW though tries to start something with the H after he ended their fake dating and shows up at his house when he arrives home with the h, but he shuts her down completely. She doesn’t create drama and is actually accepting of the H and h’s relationship after the air is cleared) -No OM drama -No sex scenes with other people -No cheating -HEA

Lizzie and Garrett takes friends with benefits up a notch. Temptation with a side of heartache and an entree of fun, Game Changer hit me right in the senses. Lynn delights the heart with a flirty friends to lovers romance that proves to be an enjoyable escape.
After reading the prequel to this story in the Scoring Over the Holidays Anthology, I was so into Garrett and Lizzie!!! I mean I loved and hated them all at the same time, but I couldn’t wait to find out how their story went. Friends to Lovers is my favorite trope, I could read it all day every day as long as it is done right. And let me just say Ms. Lynn definitely does it right. Lizzie and Garrett were everything I loved and that drives me crazy about best friends becoming lovers!
The push and pull was over the top, the love they felt for each other was equally over the top, they had me swooning and going crazy at once, it was fabulous. At the end of the day, these are two really good people who love each other so much and just had a little bit of trouble getting it together. However, when they finally do, OMG!!!! It was absolutely fantastic. They are beyond perfect for each other and they make you laugh and cry and swoon and everything in between! I loved everything about them and their journey.
I am so excited about this new series, I cannot wait to read about the rest of the team and see how their stories go!
What a pleasant surprise this book was! I didn't really expect anything when I first started it, but I ended up reading it in two sittings. Usually I tend to read the first chapters of a book and then don't pick up it for a few days, but this time the story was so easy and lighthearted to read, you know?
Game changer has the bestfriends to lovers trope, mutual pining, pregnancy trope, building a family AND hockey (!!). Perhaps a bit rushed (which might have to do with the lower page count), but definitely a short and sweet read!
And yes, I have already added the second book, Dream maker, to my TBR, because I think this is was a good start to a new series and I can't wait to get to know the other players on the team (especially Dominic, I can feel that his book will be spectacular !
Thank you to Valentine PR for providing this ARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Honestly only finished this because I paid money for it, but I skimmed the last 80%. The characters are so annoying, there’s no depth to any of them. Barely any description on how they look, and their personality is so blah. Basically everything was just happy happy happy at all times. The romance wasn’t entertaining, cute, or swoon-worthy. The male characters are soooo unrealistic, not sure if the author has ever met an actual man before.
I adored the Love & Honor duet from Stacey Lynn so I couldn’t wait to read Game Changer and I’m thrilled to report she does sports romance just as well as romantic suspense. Lizzie and Garrett’s story will give you all the feels. They’ve had an on and off friends with benefits thing for years but when Garrett wants more, Lizzie freaks out even though she’s completely in love with her best friend. They were estranged for about a year because of her reaction and it broke his heart but not enough to keep him away, because they hooked up after a recent event.
He made it clear again that he wants more and Lizzie lost it, ghosting him in the middle of the night and shutting him out completely in the months since. She doesn’t know what else to do because he was just traded to Las Vegas and her life is in Chicago so there’s no way to make it work. Lizzie has no idea how to fix things between them but realizes she has to face the situation head on when she discovers she’s pregnant. Now she’s broken his heart twice and the tabloids are plastered with pictures of him and Nadia, so things don’t bode well for Lizzie.
Garrett is shocked at first but quickly comes around. He’s always wanted to be a dad and building his family with Lizzie is everything he wants. But will she stock around or is she going to flake on him again? I love that they face their problems and don’t shy away from them. They acknowledge their own mistakes and own them, promising to work together from now on instead of pulling away from each other. Lizzie and Garrett are great together. Their story is steamy and sweet despite all the angst because being able to communicate keeps things drama-free. This is a perfect start to a new series and I can’t wait to read more.
This one started in the middle of the relationship between Garrett and Lizzie...sort of.
From the blurb, and from literally page 2, you know Lizzie is pregnant, Garrett is the father, and she is worried about ruining their friendship and destroying the happiness that he has with someone else.
She need not worry. You also find out pretty quickly that they are in love with one another, and that both of them are actually happy about the baby. And, you know how you find this out? Yup, they actually have conversations.
Like adults. Without misunderstandings, assumptions, games...actual conversations.
Don't get me wrong, I love a story with some angst and, well, a lot of those would be resolved without anywhere near all the angst with a simple phone call...but sometimes it's fun to read about a couple who find themselves, albeit by accident, exactly where they have always wanted to be.
Because of the communication, this one is a feel good title from pretty much the beginning to the end, and it's about 2 people figuring out how to make what they want work in their lives.
Game Changer is book one in the Las Vegas Vipers series and each will be able to be read as a standalone. Typically you can figure out who will be next in the series to get a story and this time we cannot figure out who it is, cannot wait to find out who it will be. It has been a few years since I have read this author and she made me realize just why I had previously enjoyed reading her books. In this story we meet Garrett and Lizzie who are BF with benefits but one runs scared from their feelings and has to make a life altering decision. Stay or go? This story will hook you from the beginning to end (although I felt the ending was rushed-my opinion only) and you grow to not only love these characters, but the hockey family as well. I love reading about Chi-town characters even if they do spend most of the story in Vegas. Not only can I not wait to see who is next, but secretly I am hoping one of the non-married team members ends up with Garrett's sister who we meet in this book. I highly recommend this read if you enjoy BF, secret/surprise pregnancy and sports romance.

Lizzie and Garrett have been best friends forever and hidden their feelings for each other. Garrett moves away to start his career and have an amazing night together when he is in town for a friend's event. The night was memorable for both of them but Lizzie needs time to see what it means. Garrett goes back to Las Vegas with his tail between his legs. Twelve weeks later Lizzie has barely had any communication with Garrett and ends up finding herself pregnant! Now she has to tell him and hope he still feels the same way after all the time has passed.
This book was really well written! I loved seeing these two reconnect and their feelings start to develop for each other. Garrett is the absolute best and so endearing and caring. I wanted to hug him. Not only does their relationship start to take shape, you see how much the other is really willing to give up for the other. Great storyline, great writing, and I cannot wait to see Garrett's sister get her own book because she is hysterical! Can't wait to read more in this series.
I've never read this author before. But its book 1 of a new series, friends to lovers is my favorite trope, on top of that it's a sports romance, I was all in. Unfortunately I didn't care for it. I debated giving 2 or 3 stars, but I think if you've read whatever series this spun from you might enjoy it more. This did not feel like a book 1. There were so many characters that I felt lost, like I opened up to the middle of a story. Not to mention SPOILER COMING Garrett and Lizzie were already together! The story starts with her already being pregnant. I thought the book may be all about flash backs showing us how they got together, the transition from friends to lovers, but we missed all that. This was like the 2nd book of a Duet. Very disappointing. I skimmed a good portion. The last chapter or so was more interesting but this book was a let down for me
With a combo of surprise pregnancy and one night stand with so much miscommunication…this wasn’t for me.
I read this book as a part of the box set of books 1-3 and sadly I won’t be finishing the rest of the set. This book felt very rushed and so much miscommunication that I felt frustrated while reading it because there was no reason for the issues. They just needed to have an actual conversation.
It did set up for a nice interconnected series as there were lots of friends, teammates etc that made a good impression and I’m sure they will get their own books!
Super sweet story! Garrett and Lizzie have been best friends for years, best friends with benefits on occasion. One such occasion ends with a positive pregnancy test. But Garrett has just moved to Vegas while Lizzie is still in Chicago. Does she move there to start a life with her best friend? Can their relationship handle a baby? I really enjoyed how Garrett took care of Lizzie, and how their relationship progressed. It was evident from the start that they were perfect for each other.
UPDATE 12.9.21: So there IS a prequel novella, Final Shot (which I found out from another review) that is included in the Scoring Over The Holidays Anthology. Had this been included in the actual book as the prequel, it would have been a whole different reading experience for me with a more positive review.
I adore hockey romances and will blindly leap into any story regardless of author or plot line, but Game Changer had me feeling like I'd been checked and scrambling for the beginning of Lizzie and Garrett's story.
Is there a prequel novella out there or a newsletter origin story? I've no idea and my search has come up empty.
If any story has personified in medias res, it's Game Changer. Maybe that works for some readers─and I don't mind if there are retrospective chapters─but never knowing the seven year history of friendship, more than friends, and one-night-stand left me feeling disconnected. Game Changer is the first in the Las Vegas Vipers series, but it does not truly seem like a stand-alone nor do I know where these characters' stories start.
I like the characters and the story that is there, but it's just not enough to save it for me when I feel like so much of the story is missing.
*ARC Review* I was so lucky to get an ARC of this book. This was my first Stacey Lynn book and it won’t be my last! I absolutely love a hockey romance and a best friends to lovers trope is one of my favs. Add in an accidental pregnancy and this is a book I’m totally here for it.
This is the first book in Stacey Lynn’s Las Vegas Vipers series which I think is a spin off from her other hockey series (totally adding the Ice Kings series to my TBT). I do wish there was a little more backstory for the characters but maybe there is in the Ice Kings series.
Garrett and Lizzie have been besties since college, sometimes with benefits. They’ve had their share of miscommunications but it seemed like they’ve always been into each other. They navigated the change in their relationship well as they had to learn to trust each other and communicate. Garrett is so attentive and not afraid to share how he feels. Lizzie was the more emotionally guarded one. It’s nice to see that in a book.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. It’s written in dual, first person POV which is always my fav. It’s a well written, fun read!
5 STARS FOR GAME CHANGER!! Amazing is all I can say. You must read this book and it is the start of a new series. Lizzie and Garrett will take you on their journey and you will love every minute, so sit back and enjoy. I can't wait for more books in this series.
Game changer is the first book in Stacey Lynn’s new series ( the Las Vegas Vipers ) friends to lovers sports romances are one of my favorite tropes . This is one of the best I have read this year . Stacey always delivers a phenomenal story , one that will grab onto all your emotions and take you on the ride of your life .Garret and Lizzie - best friends - sometimes a little bit more ( it all starts off pretty casually but slowly their feelings grow and the friendship they have turns into so much more then they expect .many obstacles get in their way as well . At first I was not so sure how I felt about Garett , he sometimes appeared to be cruel and callous ( which broke my heart for how Lizzie was hurt . But as you get further involved in the story you realize there is so much more to Garett then you think at first glance .This is such a awesome book . It’s steamy , it’s angsty , emotional at the perfect moments , as well as very intriguing. I honestly could not devour it fast enough and highly recommend it
I’m so excited for this whole series! A brand new hockey romance set in Las Vegas. “Game Changer” is the first one and it started up great and set up the whole series.
Lizzie and Garrett have been friends for years. After a hookup, Lizzie finds out she’s pregnant. She’s scared to tell Garrett because he was just traded from the team in Chicago to Las Vegas. But Garrett has been in love with Lizzie for years. Although he’s shocked at first, he’s all in and wants to be with her.
Lizzie and Garrett were so sweet and I loved them together. I loved how instantly protective Garrett was when he found out he was going to be a Dad. He was shocked at first but who wouldn’t be. And he wasn’t afraid of his feelings which is so refreshing. Lizzie is amazing too and I can’t wait to read more about her and Garrett in the upcoming books.
Stacey Lynn did an amazing job setting the series up and I know we’ve got lots of books coming up in the future from the Vipers.
