Author Jeremy Pierre and illustrator Cassandra Clark want to awaken children to a brave journey―a journey home.

This world is not our home. We live east of Eden and short of Heaven. The earlier children understand this, the more sense they can make out of this sad, wonderful place. A captivating and poetic telling of the Greatest Story Ever Told.

Told from the perspective of two angels observing from above, but not interfering the story of God's great providence unfolding in non-rhyming poetic verse, accompanied by stunning watercolor sketches. From Genesis to Calvary and beyond, the story is told, pulling out overarching themes and most of all that this world is not our home.

A beautiful book to share with children or to buy for yourself. I believe that this is an excellent, and stunning creation put together by Jeremy Pierre and Cassandra Clark, as an adult I enjoyed it so much and think that it will appeal to people of all ages. Because the best sign of a quality children's books is if it can be enjoyed by adults as well, and this Bible Storybook definitely hits that mark with flying colors, as well as telling the Most Important Story in a breath-takingly gorgeous format.

Overall, a well thought out and put together book, with gorgeous watercolors that capture the themes and nuances of the telling perfectly. Highly recommend this stunning project!

A unique children's Bible storybook - unique because of the way Pierre uses the creative dialogue of two unnamed angels to cover the major stories in the Bible (one story/event in each chapter), taking us on a journey that highlights the presence of God in people's lives - past, present and future. The book does not avoid the sensitive subjects of sin and its consequences. It is meant to be real, and to give children an honest look at the overall theme of Scripture. It is meant to introduce children to the Gospel message, helping them understand how people were made to be in fellowship with God from the very beginning. It covers how we rebelled and were separated from God, how sin causes death and destruction, and how Jesus provided the only permanent way for us to be safely welcomed back into God's presence - not because of anything WE have done, but all because of His love for us.

NOTE: This book is not written is an easy-to-read, simplistic storybook format. Therefore, it may be a little challenging for children (especially younger children) to understand. However, parents/grandparents could still use it as a great tool to introduce the message of the Gospel (known as "the greatest story ever told") and use it to discuss God's presence in their lives. It is a book that could be read over and over, allowing children to learn and understand it more as they grow in their faith.

Recent re-read.
Still phenomenal.

original review:

'Even if we were allowed
to describe this joy to you,
your language wouldn't hold up
under the weight of glory.'
(p. 3)

Brought to tears by a children's book.
- I'm still not completely convinced that this is for kids. Granted, I haven't read a Christian picture book for at least a decade, but I'm pleased to report that this one is quite different to the ones I recall. Some kids books are amnesiacs to sadness, forgetting all the sorrow, all the confusion, all the moments in life where kids and adults alike 'look up at the gloomy sky and wish themselves away' (p. 236).
- This picture book acknowledges that though the world is a wondrous place, it is also a sad place. It presents the biblical narrative as a long journey home, retelling the storyline from Genesis through Revelation (no small feat!) from the narrative perspective of two unnamed angels who eloquently retrace the story of God's presence in the world.
- The illustrations are beautiful and the words rich and poetic while remaining accessible and clear. It is also throughly scriptural while being wonderfully imaginative. It's not a quick read, not just because of length (259 pages) but because the very layout of it demands thoughtful reflection.
- Some lines are fantastic. 'Eternity awoke in a hillside cave.' (p. 212) hits particularly hard as I'm reading through Luke's gospel in preparation for Easter.
- I really wish I had something like this when I was a kid, a book that could faithfully retell stories from the Bible without only emphasising the happy emotions, a book that focuses more on the enduring presence of God rather than immediate behavioural application, a book that is honest about the ache that 'will drive you all your life to find the home you know is somewhere out there' (p. 251). This book is beautiful.

'A day is coming
that will begin
with the last dawn,
so powerful and clear,
it will end nighttime forever.'
(p. 241)

A wonderful big picture survey of the Bible. I really loved this "story Bible" version, and the illustrations along with the winsome and thoughtful telling captured the attention of my 5 year old, 8 year old, and 11 year old. Of course I cried as I read, and perhaps they'll remember that, but most of all I pray they'll return to the truths of the Gospel communicated throughout these pages.

An excellent and beautifully illustrated condensation of the main narrative scripture for children. Too many 2CVs, however. It’ll take a whole pack of sticky notes to fix.

This is the story of the most beautiful story can ever be told. We are bought on this earth to fulfill our journey home. Our journey home being Heaven. Yes we are born on this earth to live but through time we will have trials to help us to grow and to fulfill what Christ has for us in our heavenly home. Our goal our mission is to be Christ like win souls for Christ. Stories from the beginning of time in Genesis with the creation and until the time of end Revelation but yet a new beginning for a Christian. This book is a wonderful tool in every home to teach us our journey to live our journey. I can't read it to my kids but they can their children. I want my grandchildren to take this journey. My kids grew up taking the journey with us. Well written and loved illustrations.

This easy to read and understand "walk through the Bible" with your destination "home" is a gem. Beautifully written, the text flows with a gentleness and beauty that captures the reader's or listener's attention.

From The Creation to The Revelation and culminating with our destination being home with God, the journey as presented in this book will enable children to better understand Biblical truths.

Comprised of 30 chapters with preface and postscript information, the book will become a treasure. Children will not become bored or overwhelmed with the text as it is easy to understand and the chapters are not overlong.

I truly wish I had had this book when my children were small. I will pass my copy along to my great-grandchildren. I believe in the legacy of sharing God with family and am thankful for authors that produce superb works like this one.

I received an early print, paperback copy of the book and can only imagine how lovely the hardcover book will be. I encourage my readers to get a copy for their family or as a gift to others.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

It has been a minute since I took on reviewing a product but when I saw this one, I just know that I needed to share it with you.

The first thing that grabs me when I open the book are the illustrations. Oh my! I LOVE the watercolor pages and the illustrations are stunning. These pages alone will catch the eye of readers of all ages. The almost lyrical style of the words will clinch how much you love this book.

With a total of 268 pages, you will no doubt find a favorite image and story that you will want to read over and over again to the kids. And I feel that author Jeremy Pierre and illustrator Cassandra Clark want to awaken children to a brave journey — a journey home. This world is not our home. We live east of Eden and short of Heaven. The earlier children understand this, the more sense they can make out of this sad, wonderful place. This storybook aims to share their vision of the world as a place in-between, to awaken them to the brave journey they must take toward their true home — their home with God.

I love the way that Jeremy weaves the words of these familiar stories into stories that sounds like ones I haven't yet before. The way he has with words is absolutely beautifully poetic.

What Others Have to Say

“God with Us delivers truth with imagination, creativity, and beautiful illustrations. The gospel message becomes clearer with every turn of the page. Like a symphony of truth that crescendos to the final fanfare, God with Us ends with a finale that connects the gospel dots and offers an invitation to believe. Bravo and well done!” —Marty Machowski, Pastor and author of The Ology, Wonderful, Long Story Short, and other gospel-centered resources for church and home.

I agree with Marty on this! It is spot on and he makes the excellent point of saying, that Jeremy "connects the dots" and he does! It is like the ending all neatly tied up with a bow and it is wonderful!
"This is a beautiful re-telling of the most beautiful story ever told.”
—Karen Swallow Prior, Professor of Christianity & Culture, and author of On Reading Well: Finding the Good Life through Great Books.

Karen states it simply because it is true. This is a beautiful story in and of itself but adding these illustrations and lyrical words makes it that much more beautiful.

Final Thoughts

If you are like me at all you probably have a bunch of Bible story books on your shelves. Some more worn than others I bet too. If you have young ones, big ones, or next generation ones, I encourage you to go get a copy of this book. It is incredibly beautiful and will only enhance the curious nature of our children to hunger and see the wonders of our God in God With Us: A Journey Home.

I enjoyed reviewing this book and being able to share it with you. I hope that you have value in this post and will share it with others. Many blessings to you and yours friend.

Jeremy Pierre's God With Us: A Journey Home is a beautifully-illustrated and written story Bible for children. Told by the narrators, two angels who are watching history unfold from Genesis 1 at creation, and then who continue to watch and share from that moment throughout the Old Testament, into the New, to Jesus and on to the forever home His followers will share with God.

The story of the Bible, as seen by the angels, is full of wonder; wonder at God's plans, at His love for humans, at humans' love for God but also their horrendous mistakes. Cassandra Clark's illustrations help the reader enter into each story which is then defined so well by Pierre's prose. Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Joseph, Moses, and more are vividly reimagined in paintings which remind readers not only that they lived in a different time, but also in the land that would become the Middle East. We read of Israel's deliverance from Egypt, and of the nation's difficulty in living with an unseen God instead of under Pharaoh and all of his visible, and so-called, gods. David (giant-killer, king, psalmist) is introduced, and the follies of Israel's later kings are hinted at...along with God's calls for repentance, Israel's ignoring of those calls, and the resulting captivity. And then 400 years of silence...

...broken by the baby born King of the Jews. Who grew up to be Jesus; the one who touched lepers, taught His disciples, loved children, and eventually, died on the cross for all humanity's sins. And, who didn't stay dead but rose again, and still invites us into fellowship with Him through the good news of the gospel. All of these moments are retold by the angels and brought to live so beautifully through prose and art.

I loved this book. It evokes a sense of wonder in the reader as well; "seeing" the Bible through the angels' perspectives help us to capture the marvel and miracle that God's love, His repeated invitations throughout the centuries and at last, in Jesus, are to angels (no doubt) and to us, humans loved by God. Pierre includes at the close of the book, a clear explanation and invitation of what it means to accept Jesus, and to be in relationship with Him.

Don't miss this book. Perfect for families, for children as well as their parents...and maybe even as a gift for Christmas! Full of wonder AND wonderful.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This is one of the best children's Bible storybooks I have seen in a really long time! We are absolutely loving it at our house. The kids - all of them from ages 6 to 17 - gathered around and didn't want me to stop after just one. We read the intro, preface, and the first seven chapters in our first sitting before I received permission to stop for a while a pick it up later. So it was a definite win for the kids.

I'm quite picky about my children's Bibles, but I really like this one. The only thing I would change is that I wish it had used God's Name rather than calling Him "God." For example, to say that Egypt was a place where no one knew "God" is a bit ridiculous as they knew many "gods." What the author meant is that no one in Egypt knew the God YHWH yet. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it, and I just read His Name aloud to the kids where it should have been used so that's not really a big deal for us.

There are many things I love about this Bible. I'll only comment on a few. The first thing I noticed was that the illustrations actually looked like the ethnicities that the people were supposed to be! I was thrilled that Middle Easterners look Middle Eastern, Egyptians look Egyptian, and Romans look European! And the illustrations are also beautiful to look at! The other thing I love about this children's Bible is that it seems to be more theologically accurate than most children's Bibles. It sticks pretty closely with the Bible's words rather than introducing theological interpretations (for the most part - I do realize it is virtually impossible to never do that.) I also love the way that the theme of the presence of God is expressed and illustrated so well throughout the book!

All in all, we are loving the complimentary paperback copy of this book that we received from Shepherd Press for review. Opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I am looking forward to purchasing a hardback copy of this to add to our library as soon as it comes out!

There is much to love about God With Us: A Journey Home. I couldn't help but notice how it reminded me of our favorite, the Jesus Storybook Bible as I read these pages. In a similar way to that precious book, we're shown how all of the Bible ties together, with the invitation to make our true home with God. The illustrations are truly breathtakingly beautiful, and the narration is poignant while still remaining fairly accessible to a younger audience.

"But when God is not their home, people try to make their own."

And my kids are truly enjoying this being in our rotation in the mornings. They crowd around to see the gorgeous pictures and the short narration holds their attention.

I have two small complaints. The first is that it is narrated by angels. I found this to be mildly distracting from the focus of what was being shared, and potentially presumptuous to assume we can speak to what angels think. I think the book would have been stronger without this element.

And secondly, there were times when I didn't love the words chosen. I think theologically there could have been stronger word choices from time to time, even though I wouldn't say there was anything I outright disagreed with.

On the whole, I think if you're looking for another book like the Jesus Storybook Bible to add to your family's collection, this one has a lot going for it. With beautiful pictures, a central theme, and short readings, God With Us is a precious invitation to experience God as home.

God With Us is a unique children’s book, employing two unnamed angels to narrate the stories of the Holy Bible. By revealing people and events, good and bad, throughout the Scriptures, it ultimately showcases the matchless beauty and wonder of dwelling in the presence of God.

The angels open with the story of creation and how the first man and woman (Adam and Eve), were with God. The angels ask the reader to imagine the best day ever and times it by a million to come close to the happiness Adam and Eve shared. But, as the story continues, they are deceived by the snake and suddenly became fearful because they’re separated from God.

The book continues with numerous Scripture stories, giving the reader a good look at our world and how our home here on earth is only temporary. From Genesis to Revelation, it shows us how we are all on a journey toward our true home in the presence of God, and only Jesus can lead us there.

The illustrations, some full-page, add so much to this book. They are colorful and evocative, helping the reader to visualize each story. Some of the themes and events in the book (as in the Bible) may be a bit shadowy and dark for younger readers, so I suggest parents review these occurrences with them according to their age group. I can’t wait to share this illuminating book with my grandbaby when he gets older.

God With Us: A Journey Home is a beautiful book that encourages children to have hope for our eternal home in Heaven. Author Jeremy Pierre and illustrator Cassandra Clark believe the earlier children understand that this world is not our home, the more they realize that Heaven is our eventual destination.

This storybook aims to shape their vision of the world as a place in-between, to awaken them to the brave journey they must take toward their true home—their home with God. The stories are shared in more simple terms but without talking down to a child. There's a theme to the stories and I feel each can easily initiate a conversation to fully engage a child about the truth found in Scripture.

The more I read, the more I enjoyed the book. And I love the illustrations! It is most suitable for elementary school aged kids, but even older kids can gain much from it, too. It's an excellent resource for teaching your child/grandchild that Christ followers need to understand and prepare for our eternal home.

This is a beautiful book that weaves together Bible stories. It has a theme to acknowledge the presence of God. God created us to have a relationship with Him in the beginning. It takes you on a journey throughout the Bible until you are reunited with our Creator and Savior.

There are a total of thirty chapters. Each chapter starts out with some scriptures that you look up giving you several addresses from the scriptures. Then it has a scripture written out. Then the Biblical story follows: Joseph in Egypt and him interpreting dreams and it then talks about how God meant it for good. It takes you on a journey through the scriptures. It reminds me of a devotional in some aspects but not completely.

The illustrations are breathtaking and very enjoyable looking through them. They look like beautiful watercolors. On each page, you can explore all the details.

The book is for ages 4-12. I feel teens would like this as it plays out the salvation message as the stories progress. It's done in a way that isn't overwhelming or preachy but has a clear picture of salvation.

This wonderfully illustrated walk through the Bible captured my attention immediately with the unique narrators being two angels. This creative manner from which to relate the stories of the Bible in a fresh way adds an element of surprise and wonder. It brought unexpected pleasure to one who has heard the stories many times. The truth of the stories has not been altered, only the angle from which they are told is different. I love this trustworthy telling of truth from God’s word.

The illustrations amaze me, too. They are much more realistic than what is seen in many children’s Bible story books. I appreciate both styles and find this book to be a help for children who want to sit and study the pictures because they are quite detailed.

The storyline which weaves all the stories together brings me greater understanding and joy. As a child, I never got the whole story and only got disjointed parts. What a blessing this book brings me even today as an older adult. I purchased the audiobook first to listen to while traveling and to share with others. I later received the beautiful softcover book free from a media group and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend either format but especially the print version for its spectacular illustrations.

Kids journey through the Bible toward Home...

Part storybook, part devotional, all Truth. God With Us: A Journey Home is a well written adaptation of the best love story of them all, God's love for humanity. Through the fictional eyes of two angels author Jeremy Pierre and illustrator Cassandra Clark take kids, and the adults around them, on a full-color journey through the Bible, from Creation to Revelation, that reminds them that this world isn't where we belong and God has perfectly planned our return to His perfect home for us.

Even though I am an adult I found the book compelling and a wonderful reminder of truths that are often lost sight of in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Yes, the Jeremy Pierre's well chosen words are aimed at children, as are Cassandra Clark's vivid illustrations, but Truth is applicable for all ages.

As I read God With Us: A Journey Home I knew that it would be a great choice for parents or grandparents to read to their (grand)kids. Just a chapter before bed or first thing in the morning. Something of a devotional and definitely a conversation starter. It's a great base to start exploring Scripture as we each make our journey toward Home...

The book is a children's book, which teaches kids, Earth is not our home, Heaven is. The story is told from the perspective of two, unnamed, angels. The book chose not to give the angels names because the main character of the story--the book, and in real life, is Jesus.

The book is written in a poem, like, narrative format. Each chapter focuses on a different bible story, from Genesis to Revelation. The chapters are quick reads, great for kids, who may not have the best attention spans, like my kids.

Kalen loves books, with few words and a lot of pictures. He likes calling out things in the pictures. I can read a chapter and show him the pics before he goes back to Youtubing a kitchen skit. I can teach him about God, for those few moments.

TLDR: if you are Baptist or roughly align with Baptist theology and you want a beautiful coffee table book that may also work as a Children's book, depending on how old and precocious your children are, this may work for you.

This book is beautiful, and is certainly less problematic than many Bible Storybooks, but it still has it's issues:
1. It's from a specific theological view point and emphasizes theology more than story
2. It assumes readers are already generally familiar with the stories
3. While it is a picture book, the figurative language seems better aimed at older children or even adults.

Astoundingly BEAUTIFUL!! The illustrations are gorgeous, and the text—while narrative prose—reads like poetry and looks like poetry on the page.

The scripture references at the beginning of each chapter are well-chosen. I appreciate that for most sections, multiple passages from across the Bible are used to show how this truly is one journey from the first creation to the redeemed new home with God forever.

And readers are called to respond. “This home is also yours for the taking. It will cost you nothing. It will cost you everything. Turn your journey there. Trust the promises of Jesus. God with us. Us with God. Home.

I read this as a devotional in an after school program and it worked great! The students, ages 4-11, enjoyed it. We read 2 chapters a day and that seemed to work well since they are short. Each day we would read a new chapter, reading the previous day's chapter as review first. To try and drive the concepts home I also made a coloring page/activity sheet for each chapter. I think this little study helped my students start to understand that God loves his people since eternity, and they can see that in how Jesus is hinted at in each story.

What a beautiful and compelling book to read your children! I have read many children’s books in the past 2 years and I would say this one is one of the best. The art work is beautiful capturing the story with bright and colorful pictures. And the theology drenched in each story reveals Pierre loves his Bible and loves communicating it to his children.

God With Us: A Journey Home is a great way to show younger ones the Bible in a new way. Jeremy Pierre does a wonderful job sending them on a wonderful journey of God’s word. I loved every page.

God With Us: A Journey Home is illustrated by the talented Cassandra Clark. The pictures perfectly follow the book. I found it a joy to see how the pictures on each page brings out the text. It was great seeing the Biblical characters being brought to life like that.

I am giving God With Us: A Journey Home a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of four and ten years of age. It would make a beautiful gift.

I received a paperback copy of God With Us: A Journey Home from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

God With Us is so unique. It's a children's Bible story book with pretty illustrations. What makes it so different is the narration--stories told by two angels.

With diverse characters and the message of God's presence is evident. Great bedtime storybook.
